There weren’t many teams that had higher expectations than Carl Albert in 2023. The Titans were considered a “super team” and the expectations were not only a perfect season, but a dominant showing week in and week out. The team was loaded so the expectations were warranted but the Titans would live up to them and lifted another gold ball and went 14-0 in the process. The season began with dominant wins in non-district play, including a 43-20 road win over eventual 6A-2 champion Muskogee. That dominance continued until week eight when they traveled to face rival Guthrie. They were in an absolute dog fight and it took a touchdown on 4th and goal with less than a minute left for the Titans to escape “The Rock” with a 24-21 win. Carl Albert would then get back on track and dominate their way to another state championship. They would square off with Mid-Del rival Del City in the title game, in a match-up of 5A’s #1 and #2 teams all season. Carl Albert would knock off the Eagles 35-14 to win championship #18, which puts them in a tie with Jenks for second most in state history. And now, they shift their focus to the pursuit for championship #19, which would put them in a tie for the most in state history. But the journey for championship #19 will be a bumpy one when you consider some of the names they have to replace coming into this season. Last year, they felt invincible. This year, they’ll have to earn it.
2024 OUTLOOK
When you talk about some of the names the Titans are going to have to replace, the conversation obviously starts with the quarterback and the running back. They lost their star running back to graduation and their star quarterback after he moved back to Texas. But a very underrated hit to the Titans this offseason was the graduation of their offensive line. The Titans will have an offensive line this year consisting of mostly new starters. Now, don’t get us wrong, Carl Albert is still loaded with talent. They have three seniors that are all committed to Oklahoma and among the very best in the state’s 2025 class. They have another senior that is looking to become a three-time All State 1st Team selection this fall. And for the second straight year, they did benefit from a talented quarterback moving into the district. So Carl Albert does have to reload on the offensive line and in some other places if they’re going to defend their title but they have a ton of ammo in other spots. And when you look at Class 5A this season, it looks incredibly balanced. While last year was Carl Albert and Del City at 1 and 2 for the entire season, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the top five in the class get shifted around on an almost weekly basis. There are some really good teams that can contend with the Titans but until someone does it when it matters most, and when you look at the guys Carl Albert does return, they’re the favorites to do it again in December.

has the chance to become a three-time All State 1st Team selection this season. When he was a sophomore, he was one of the state’s leaders in sacks from the defensive line position. As a junior, he moved to linebacker and continued to be one of the state’s best tacklers. This year, he’ll look to earn 1st Team honors for the third consecutive season as he’s firmly established himself as one of the very best defenders in Oklahoma. But this season, we will see Davis in a new role, in addition to his play on defense. Davis will get into the game on offense as a power back for the Titans and that’s going to be fun to watch.
The Titans have their fair share of absolute studs on the defensive side of the ball but senior
Carlveon Young

is a name that might not have the attention as some of the others. But if he stays healthy this fall, it won’t take long for him to be considered in the same discussion as those other guys. Young showed flashes of being a standout defender last season but injuries plagued what could have been a breakout junior season. A few days after his best game in 2023, Young would get hurt and his junior year was effectively over. But he had a fantastic track season and performed really well during spring football and is primed for a big 2024 season.

We mentioned how the Titans will benefit from the addition of a quarterback for the second straight year. After becoming a standout at Edmond Santa Fe,
Daniel Newton

moves over to Carl Albert for his senior season and he provides the Titans with a very dynamic player that can do a lot of different things well. First off, Newton is a terrific athlete and probably one of the strongest players in the state. And we’re not talking about arm strength, although he has that as well. Newton is a weight room warrior but he’s also entering a Carl Albert offense where there are weapons everywhere in the passing game. He has the potential to have a huge season.

Marcus James

moving from Bishop McGuinness to Carl Albert and he was an immediate impact player for the Titans. James is the first of the three Carl Albert standouts that are committed to Oklahoma and he committed to the Sooners during his outstanding junior season on offense and defense. You can make the argument that in Carl Albert’s narrow win over Guthrie, James had his best game. He was a weapon on offense at tight end and a standout at the linebacker position. While his future looks like it’s on the defensive side of the ball.

to graduate already. Washington has been one of Carl Albert’s best players for three seasons and this year will be his fourth. He burst onto the scene during his freshman season as one of the team’s top receivers. And over the course of the last few years, he’s added many other elements to his game. He’s a standout in the secondary and he’s arguably one of the state’s best punters. Granted, Carl Albert hasn’t had to punt that much over the last two seasons but when they have, he’s a weapon there as well. Washington is also the second of the three commits to Oklahoma and has stayed loyal to the Sooners.

was the best football player on the field. He can do everything and he did it at a very high level last season. He was the team’s leading receiver on offense. He then turned around and was a shutdown corner on defense. And he was also an absolute monster in the return game with both kicks and punts. Haynes has been considered a top five overall prospect in the state’s 2025 class for a while now and you could make a very solid argument that he’s right at the top. He is a very fun player to watch and is the third and final part of Carl Albert’s OU commits.

2024 SCHEDULE/GAMES TO CIRCLE
Sept. 6th – Midwest City
– The Titans will begin defense of their state championship in week one at home against Mid-Del rival Midwest City. These two teams have met in each of the last six seasons in non-district play and Carl Albert holds a 5-1 advantage during that stretch. It wouldn’t be surprising to see this match-up be the first of two meetings in 2024. The Bombers bring back a ton of experience on both sides of the ball and that could provide a very early challenge to the Titans in 2024.
Sept. 12th – AT Lawton Eisenhower
Sept. 20th – AT Stillwater
– This week three clash with 6A-2 powerhouse Stillwater is one of our favorite non-district match-ups featuring teams from different classes. Both teams expect to be playing in Edmond when December rolls around. Both teams have future D1 talent on both sides of the ball so the star power is clearly there. So needless to say, this should be a marquee match-up in week three. And for the reigning 5A champs, this will be the last tune up before they go into district play.
Sept. 27th – AT Western Heights
Oct. 4th – El Reno
Oct. 10th – AT Noble
Oct. 17th – John Marshall
Oct. 25th – Lawton
Nov. 1st – AT Guthrie
– Carl Albert returns to “The Rock” in week nine to face the Blue Jays. The Carl Albert-Guthrie rivalry was one of the best in 5A football for a long time. It was renewed last year with the instant classic that had Carl Albert winning in the final minute. That was one of the best games we saw in person in 2023 and the rematch shouldn’t be lacking drama or intrigue. These two teams feel like the top two squads in this district so the district title could be decided right here.
Nov. 8th – Altus
NOTABLE
Carl Albert has one of our absolute favorite facts and stats when it comes to prolonged championship success in state history. Bixby has been to ten consecutive state title games. Shattuck has won 93 consecutive games. But Carl Albert has been the model for continued and prolonged success in Oklahoma high school football. The Titans are tied with Jenks for second most state championships in state history with 18, behind only Ada with 19. But the Titans have never had anything that was even close to a resemblance of a championship drought since they won their first gold ball in 1989. They won five consecutive titles from 1997-2001 and then seven titles in the last eight seasons from 2016-2023. And here’s the stat. The senior class on Carl Albert’s 1988 football team was the last senior class that did not win a state championship during their four years of high school. Read that back one more time. It’s been well over three decades and the Titans have won at least one (and plenty of times, more than just one) championship during any four year stretch. And they show no signs of slowing down in 2024.
