At 6-2 heading into their final regular season game, Hub Stein Field played host to perhaps their final playoff game without lights.
Will the Cardinals be able to sustain, and dare say surpass, their recent renaissance? If they do, here are a set of prospects they will be leaning on.
Returning Contributors Series
Darren Hester Darren Hester 5’10” | 185 lbs | DL Plainfield | 2025 NJ is a versatile defender for the Cardinals who is utilized to rush off the edge or play a traditional mike ‘backer role. When coming off the edge Hester seems to possess a strong get off, maybe even jumping the snap. Part of what I think aids Hester in this part of his game is that he hugs the line of scrimmage, minimizing space and maximizing his sight lines. He squeezes with appropriate depth in the backfield and takes away his inside gap. Additionally, as the season went on we see Hester improving his wrong arm technique. He also is reactive, getting his hands up to deflect quick screen game pass attempts or passes in the flat. When in the box we see that Hester seems to see things clearly, getting down hill and finding a gap to attack rather quickly. He accelerates downhill and then slows down as he approaches the ball carrier to make the tackle. Sideline-to-sideline hustle is a part of his game too. Finally, as climbing linemen approach him we see that the 2025 graduate execute an outstanding drip, rip, and restack to be in perfect position to corral the ball carrier. Cleaning up false steps will aid Hester in improving upon his 37 tackle (17 solo) and 3 sack campaign as a sophomore.
When Hester is on the edge, chances are fellow 2025 graduate Chantz Fitz Chantz Fitz 6’1″ | 190 lbs | OL Plainfield | 2025 NJ is lined up opposite him – leading to a 22 tackle (8 solo), 3 sack, 1 FF, and 1 Int campaign. Although he sets the edge, Fitz goes about his responsibilities differently than Hester. We see Fitz sort of two-gap oncoming blockers, first positioning outside and then ripping back into the inside gap – creating an unclear read for linemen and ball carriers in the process. When called to attack a gap, Fitz aggressively and violent slants to eliminate said gap. I want to see Fitz work on his pad level. Doing so will increase his propensity to breakdown and thus improve his tackling and ability to pursue.
Yet another featured defensive linemen for Plainfield is Jah’quan Anderson Jah’quan Anderson 5’11” | 210 lbs | DL Plainfield | 2026 NJ . More of an interior player, he was credited with 32 tackles (6 solos) last fall. Anderson’s go-to move appears to be the swim. He identifies when an offensive lineman has too much forward lean and can use his leverage against him. Anderson also utilizes his athleticism to his advantage. We often see him appear to overset his gap, only to rip back across the face of the offensive lineman who has shielded him, beating him, and making a play. Anderson would benefit from extending and locking out his arms more frequently. Creating separation will allow him to see things develop more clearly, quicker.
With just one 1 tackle on the season, Nazir Brown Nazir Brown 6’5″ | 250 lbs | OL Plainfield | 2026 NJ is Plainfield’s incumbent at right tackle. Brown appears to possess tremendous upper body strength, as evidenced when he finishes his blocks. He also looks to create space on his finish by locking out and extending on his opponent. Brown appears to have found a way to compensate for digging out 4i’s by using their leverage against themselves as he continually finishes them into the ground. An immediate improvement Brown could stand to make is be mindful of his base when engaging. Keeping a solid base will allow him to remain in stout position, create drive, and maintain control of his blocks.
Competing for a varsity spot next year is Robert Morris Robert Morris 5’9″ | 170 lbs | OL Plainfield | 2026 NJ , who appears to have served in a reserve role. Morris has shown that he can handle the swim move well and works to remain in position, in front of his matchup. I would encourage Morris to keep playing from snap-to-the-whistle.
