Another position that I could highlight daily, in this coverage we will highlight some of the receivers that not only put up impressive stats in 2023, but receivers that are in a position to put up even more unbelievable numbers in 2024.
One of my favorite receivers in the class, Joel Cordoba Joel Cordoba 6’2″ | 185 lbs | DB Plainfield | 2025 State NJ made it near impossible for corners to keep up with him in 2023. Racking up 1234 yards and 12 touchdowns last fall for Plainfield, Joel was one of the most explosive receivers in the state. With a very quick burst, Joel is able to catch defenders off guard as he darts on by towards the end zone.
When the QB tosses it up high, Joel is able to outcompete the defender for the ball with his longer reach and hand strength. He can take it right out of the defenders and can even come down with it when he is heavily covered. Look for another big performance out of Joel in 2024.
Honing from Westfield, Enzo Ferrero Enzo Ferrero 5’11” | 170 lbs | WR Westfield | 2025 NJ displayed some of the best receiving skills in New Jersey last season. Showing off his quick footwork, Enzo is able to create separation from the defender as he cuts back towards the line on the comeback route. Enzo is built with speed as well. He is able to crank his sprint into a second gear and leave the defenders behind him. Reeling in 11 touchdowns and 915 yards, Enzo is ready to put up another impressive season in 2024.
Malik Rehmer
Malik Rehmer
An extremely fast downfield threat, Malik Rehmer has built up a reputation in Pennsville, NJ. Malik has a very quick burst off of the line, and he catches defensive backs off guard with the speed he achieves in his routes. What’s most impressive is how dangerous Malik is once the ball in his hands. Shifty as a ball carrier, Malik also applies his break away speed to outrun the defender once he comes down with the catch. Catching for 771 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2023, I am excited to see him continue his success as a true playmaker.
Matthew Scerbo Matthew Scerbo 6'2" | 175 lbs | WR Phillipsburg | 2025 NJ Jr.
Matthew Scerbo Matthew Scerbo 6'2" | 175 lbs | WR Phillipsburg | 2025 NJ Jr.
A receiver that I believe deserves way more recognition, Matthew Scerbo Matthew Scerbo 6’2″ | 175 lbs | WR Phillipsburg | 2025 NJ Jr. lit it up for Phillipsburg last fall. Compiling 718 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2023, Matt was most destructive to defenses with his excellent footwork. Crossing defenders legs up, Matt is then able to break on his route and give his quarterback a large window to throw to. With the quick stutter step, Matt can make it agonizing for defenses to keep track of him in the red zone. Whether he’s running a slant or heading to the pylon, there is a good chance Matt is open ready to score the touchdown. Phillipsburg’s a team that will make a deep playoff push in 2024.
A receiver that I believe will receive much more attention this offseason, Cedar Creek’s Darius Benjamin Darius Benjamin 5’10” | 170 lbs | WR Cedar Creek | 2025 State NJ is one of the most skilled receivers our state has to offer. Darius’ catch abilities and catch radius is a problem for every defense he faces. He is able to track the ball extremely well and can maneuver his body in a way to make the difficult catch look easy. With elite speed, quick change of direction, and the ability to outjump the competition, Darius is a presence in the endzone that will go unmatched in 2024. Racking up 683 yards and 6 touchdowns last fall, look for him to put up some astonishing numbers next season.
