In this post, we’re putting the spotlight on the defensive side of the ball. These guys were the best of the best at linebacker and defensive back. If you’re looking for a breakdown on the top defensive linemen, CLICK HERE. 2025 linebacker Reece Burton Reece Burton 6'2" | 200 lbs | LB Elk City | 2025 State OK and 2025 defensive back Jaylon Moll Jaylon Moll 5'10" | DB Owasso | 2025 OK was covered earlier this week in our spotlight on the positional MVPs from the camp. Keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma for more camp breakdowns!
Putnam City 2025 linebacker Brayden Knox Brayden Knox 6’3″ | LB Putnam City | 2025 State OK came to the camp in Broken Arrow and competed very well. Knox is already on the radar across the state as a prospect for the next level. He was offered by Tulsa last month and that could be just the tip of the iceberg. You watch Knox move around in person and when you combine that with his size, you see what the hype is all about. There is a lot of potential with Knox moving forward. As far as the drills and the competition, Knox was right there with the other linebackers. But it’s what Knox could be as he continues to develop his skills. What he’ll be at this time next year is going to be completely different from what we saw Sunday. The camp series theme is “Stock Up” and Knox is just that. Buy stock now.
Walking around the linebacker group during drills and competition, Miami 2025 linebacker Chris Kelley Chris Kelley 6’0″ | LB Miami | 2025 State OK immediately caught my attention and the attention of the coaches in attendance. First off, Kelley is built like a mack truck and can move. So when we look at Kelley standing out in the camp, it’s more about his potential moving forward. With his size and ability to fly around, Kelley has to be a very physical linebacker when the pads come on and he’s able to hit somebody. During the competition part of the camp, Kelley did a good job locating the running back and staying on their hip, running stride for stride and making a play on the ball. The Miami linebacker is definitely someone I want to see this spring and fall.
Deer Creek 2025 linebacker Jared Kappenman Jared Kappenman 6’0″ | 205 lbs | LB Edmond North | 2025 State OK is no stranger to the Prep Redzone camp circuit. It feels like Kappenman has been at every single camp we’ve had since launching the camp circuit in 2021. The Deer Creek linebacker has also had plenty of success at these events. He’s routinely been one of the best linebackers in attendance and Sunday was no different. Kappenman immediately stood out and moved incredibly well. He was outstanding in the drills and responded quickly to the coaching he was given. He also played in a 7v7 tournament down in Texas on Saturday and made it all the way to Broken Arrow for the camp on Sunday. He got banged up in one on ones but other than that, it was a very successful day once again.

We covered North Rock Creek 2025 standout Jordan Mcclain Jr Jordan Mcclain Jr 6’1″ | 210 lbs | LB North Rock Creek | 2025 State OK earlier this month during our Friday Film Review series. And we said it on that breakdown, Mcclain looks like a linebacker at the next level. He came out on Sunday and participated in drills and competition at the linebacker position. And specifically in the competition part of the camp, Mcclain absolutely shined. He did such a good job going against running backs in passing situations. Mcclain really impressed us on film with his ability to get down hill and lay the wood. But in a camp setting, he couldn’t showcase his ability to hit but it doesn’t matter. We already know he can and we got to see elements of his game that make him an intriguing prospect to watch.

Union had a few players standing out on Sunday and 2026 DB Oliver Smith Oliver Smith 5’10” | 155 lbs | WR OK is just one of them. Smith might be the next guy up in the Union secondary and this has been a very talented unit over the last decade. It seems like they are routinely producing power five players and Smith could be the next one up. The Redhawks have to replace some next level players and that will open up some spaces in the secondary for new names. Smith is going to be a name to watch heading into this fall. He’s not the only 2026 DB to look out for when Union takes the field. But when we talked with the coaches in attendance, Smith was one of the first defensive backs that was mentioned as a guy that performed well in drills and in competition.
This was our second time to see Millwood 2025 standout Tyshawn Buford Jr Tyshawn Buford Jr 6’0″ | 180 lbs | DB Millwood | 2025 OK at our Prep Redzone camps. Last year, Buford primarily played on the offensive side of the ball. This week, Buford participated in drills on defense at DB and he, like Smith was apart of a deep group at defensive back. Buford has good size and length and that could certainly be a key moving forward. He looked good at the cornerback position and it will be interesting to see how he continues to progress on the defensive side of the ball. Buford could certainly slide into the role of Jamariyon Franklin Jamariyon Franklin 6’1″ | DB Millwood | 2024 State OK when this fall rolls around. Franklin was a long corner who could be very physical. We could see Buford taking on that role when the Falcons take the field this fall.
