Illinois has a strong crew of signal callers heading to the next level, and many of them signed during the early signing period. However, all the early activity doesn’t mean there aren’t more athletes at the position who can help a next level team. I have come across multiple QBs in the Class of 2024 that college coaches should get their eyes on as we approach National Signing Day in early February. The tape is included to also check out.
IC Catholic’s Dennis Mandala Dennis Mandala 5’10” | 170 lbs | QB IC Catholic | 2024 State IL put together a dominant career, going 36-6 with nearly 7,000 passing yards and 80 TDs. Dennis might not fit the size requirements for some teams, but a team that takes a chance on him is going to get a baller. The senior’s tape shows a QB in complete control of the offense. As a passer, Dennis is poised under pressure, has a quick release, and he is able to place the ball accurately all over the field while in rhythm, under pressure, or on the move. Mandala’s quick feet allow him to instantly set and throw. Add in a solid dual threat ability when needed and you get a QB that has traits to continue to mold at the next level. Give him a look.
Highlights
The potential ceiling that NaCari possesses could entice coaches at the next level. NaCari has an impressive frame, and the arm strength checks off the box. McFarland’s arm strength is what first jumps off tape. He is able to get the ball out quick, and get behind the ball to deliver it on a frozen rope. When he wants the ball there instantly, NaCari can get it there with very little air under the ball, if any at all. The highlights are filled with examples of him delivering those high velocity passes with accuracy to all three levels of the field as well. The senior will need time to work on his footwork, and possibly refine his throwing motion, but those are teachable traits. The natural talent is well worth taking the chance on. Check out the tape.
Highlights
Braden is an interesting recruit to watch. While he doesn’t have typical size for the position, Braden has found ways to be effective, and productive at the HS level. He brings a dual threat to the field that can hurt a defense when he gets past the line of scrimmage, or he can use it to move in the pocket or outside it while keeping his eyes downfield. His passing attack relies on touch and accuracy while still being able to drop the ball in deep downfield. The senior does a consistently good job of moving his eyes and his feet together, that way he is ready to get the ball out quick as he finds the open man as he goes through his progressions.
Highlights
Jett is an under the radar prospect with high upside. The size that teams look for is there in the 6’3″ 190 lbs senior. The physical tools match the big frame as well. The highlights are filled with Jett pushing the ball downfield with a good blend of accuracy and velocity. He thrives while attacking downfield. On the short to intermediate throws, Jett shows that he can tune down the power and use more touch on his passes. The touch is an area he can continue to make strides in, though. Going back to the arm strength, Hilding shows that he has the ability to throw off his back foot or without getting his feet totally set because of the power. This is another prospect who has exciting natural gifts. He just needs time to continue to develop.
Highlights
Ethan could be one of the top risers when we update the IL rankings. The senior put on a show in his final season. The senior has a prototypical 6’3″ 205 lbs frame. The big QB impresses with his decisive play. You will see him go through progressions, and quickly get the ball out when he finds the matchup he likes. Ethan has an efficient throwing motion, and the ball naturally explodes out of his hand when he needs to beat DBs to spots. Most importantly, the senior dominated with accuracy. So many highlights show him not just hitting his target, but hitting them in stride so they can create big plays after the catch. Kohl also offers athleticism to buy time, and quick feet to set and throw in an instant. Check this dude out.
