I had a nice week last week going 6-1.
Here’s a look at the top games this week and who I think will come out victorious.
SERVITE VS. MATER DEI
Servite is much-improved from the 1-9 performance it put up last season. Leo Hannan Leo Hannan 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Servite | 2025 State CA is one of the best junior quarterbacks in Southern California and Quaid Carr Quaid Carr 6'0" | 180 lbs | RB Servite | 2025 State CA can make big plays out of the backfield. Mater Dei’s defense is a whole different animal and can be the first team to really get in the backfield to bother Hannan. Nasir Wyatt Nasir Wyatt 6'2" | 225 lbs | LB Mater Dei | 2025 State CA had a massive game last week with four sacks and Tanner Williams Tanner Williams 6'1" | 210 lbs | LB Mater Dei | 2024 State CA is also effective off the edge. Mater Dei’s secondary led by Zabien Brown Zabien Brown 6'1" | 180 lbs | DB Mater Dei | 2024 State CA and Chuck McDonald III Chuck McDonald III 6'1" | 180 lbs | DB Mater Dei | 2025 State CA can blanket the Servite receivers. I see Servite having a difficult time scoring against this Mater Dei defense.
The pick: Mater Dei
CORONA DEL MAR VS. EDISON
Both Corona del Mar and Edison have lost to the same two teams: Palos Verdes and San Clemente. The Sea Kings are coming off a close win against Trabuco Hills where the offense was stagnant. Kaleb Annett Kaleb Annett 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB Corona Del Mar | 2024 CA is a good enough quarterback to carry an offense and Russell Weir is a difficult receiver to match up with. Edison got a nice win last week against Wilcox of Santa Clara. Julius Gillick ran the ball effectively for the Chargers and Save Niumata was solid at quarterback. Hoi Hansen had 16 tackles and will be the best defensive player in this game. Both teams have played below expectations for themselves this season and this game could come down to whoever has the ball last.
The pick: Edison
SAN PEDRO VS. GARDENA
San Pedro seems to be bound for the LA City Section Open Division playoffs again this year and will play undefeated Gardena this week. Santiago Rivera is a strong running back who can run between the tackles and Marcus Jeronymo is a good athlete at quarterback. Xavier Grant had a big game for Gardena in its close win over King/Drew last week. Keyshawn Hood leads the Gardena defense which had three sacks last week. Both of these teams could be in the City Section Open Division playoffs in November.
The pick: San Pedro
TESORO VS. SAN JUAN HILLS
This is one of the bigger new rivalries in South Orange County. Tesoro is coming off a bye after beating a banged up Cypress team. The Titans seemed to have unleashed the athleticism of quarterback Cash O’Byrne Cash O’Byrne 6'1" | 195 lbs | QB Tesoro | 2025 CA to pick up yardage when needed. Air Force commit Travis Wood Travis Wood 5'10" | 215 lbs | RB Tesoro | 2024 State CA accounts for a lot of Tesoro’s offensive production. San Juan Hills can move the ball on the ground or through the air with running back Sullivan Land, quarterback Timmy Herr Timmy Herr 6'1" | 205 lbs | QB San Juan Hills | 2026 State CA and receivers Jadyn Robinson Jadyn Robinson WR Narbonne | 2025 State CA and Jason Robinson JR Jason Robinson JR 5'11" | 160 lbs | WR San Juan Hills | 2024 State CA . The Stallions are a little better on defense with Weston Port Weston Port 6'2" | 225 lbs | LB San Juan Hills | 2025 State CA and Jake Javorsky Jake Javorsky 5'11" | 220 lbs | LB San Juan Hills | 2024 CA . Tesoro will hang tough in this game, but San Juan Hills is more athletic at the skill positions.
The pick: San Juan Hills
UPLAND VS. DAMIEN
Damien is the top team in the San Gabriel Valley this year and just beat the No. 2 team in La Serna. Isaiah Arriaza Isaiah Arriaza 5'11" | 175 lbs | QB Damien | 2026 State CA has been outstanding at quarterback for Damien and receiver Ayden Gutierrez Ayden Gutierrez 5'11" | 160 lbs | WR Damien | 2024 State CA is a real playmaker. Freshman Gavin Williams Gavin Williams 6'1" | 175 lbs | DB Damien | 2027 State CA has three interceptions to lead the Damien defense. Upland is a very strong team with Noah Sandoval Noah Sandoval 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Upland | 2024 State CA at quarterback. The receiving duo of Justin Benson and Trestin Castro Trestin Castro 6'2" | 165 lbs | DB Upland | 2025 State CA can cause matchup problems for Damien. Donovan Brown had 9 tackles and a pick-six last week for Upland in its win over Charter Oak last week.
The pick: Damien
CARLSBAD VS. MISSION HILLS
Carlsbad is 5-0 and once again is a top two team in the San Diego Section along with Lincoln. Alabama commit Julian Sayin Julian Sayin 6'1" | 195 lbs | QB Carlsbad | 2024 State CA has completed 79 percent of his passes for 1026 yards with 13 touchdowns and zero interception. Mason Walsh Mason Walsh 5'8" | 195 lbs | RB Carlsbad | 2024 State CA is a good running back Josh Ball Josh Ball 5'10" | 165 lbs | ATH Carlsbad | 2024 State CA has proven himself to be the top receiver. Jude McLellan Jude McLellan 6'4" | 230 lbs | DL Carlsbad | 2024 State CA and Luke Ferrelli Luke Ferrelli 6'3" | 220 lbs | LB Carlsbad | 2024 State CA lead the Lancer’s defense. Mission Hills is coming off strong wins against Orange Vista and San Marcos. Jonathon Class is one of the better pass rushers in San Diego and may be able to make Sayin a little uncomfortable.
The pick: Carlsbad
ORANGE LUTHERAN VS. JSERRA
This game may decide third place in the Trinity League. A lot of the game hinges on whether Orange Lutheran quarterback TJ Lateef TJ Lateef 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Orange Lutheran | 2025 State CA plays. Alex Medyn Alex Medyn 6'0" | 200 lbs | QB Chino Hills | 2026 State CA filled in against Sierra Canyon but left that game with an injury as well. Steve Chavez Steve Chavez 6'0" | 210 lbs | RB Orange Lutheran | 2025 State CA has broken away as the top running back for Orange Lutheran and Tyler Hennessey and AJ Ia AJ Ia 6'6" | 225 lbs | TE Orange Lutheran | 2025 State CA are reliable targets for whoever plays quarterback. Talanoa Ili Talanoa Ili 6'4" | 215 lbs | LB Orange Lutheran | 2026 State CA will be the best defensive player in this game. Michael Tollefson Michael Tollefson 6'1" | 195 lbs | QB Tustin | 2025 State CA has been more effective with his legs than his arm at quarterback for JSerra. The running game is strong with Gabriel Rivas and Kamar Garbourel. The matchup I am excited to see in this game is JSerra edge rusher Luke Webb Luke Webb 6'2" | 225 lbs | DL JSerra | 2025 State WA against Orange Lutheran tackle Samuelu Utu Samuelu Utu 6'5" | 295 lbs | OL Orange Lutheran | 2026 State CA .
The pick: Orange Lutheran
