Below are a way-to-early list of rushers who are in contention for the state’s rusher of the year. With so many to pick from, I only limited myself to select five to highlight.
One of two run-first quarterbacks on today’s watch list, Dietz has been a total dynamo. He has led Brick to a perfect 4-0 record thus far this season. It is no coincidence that the senior leads the state in both total rushing yardage (746) and touchdowns (13) on 80 attemps. If you were curious, he is 26 of 41 through the air for 474 yards and 4 touchdowns to no picks. He also plays defense, having made 33 stops (25 solo), 1 sack, 3 tackles for loss. He is averaging 9.3 yards per carry.
Highlights
For as awesome Dietz has been, Reagan is outpacing him by just a hair. In 3 games, all victories, Reagan has led Woodbury with 659 yards and 12 touchdowns on just 52 carries. This boils down to a 12.7 yards per carry average and a touchdown every 5th carry.
Manchester Township’s Love is also on a crazy-fast start to the season. Being 4-0, Manchester relies heavily on Love and his big play ability. Love has totaled 11 touchdowns and 640 yards on 53 attempts this season. He is averaging 12.1 yards per carry and scores on every 5th carry. A factor in the passing game, Love averages 42.6 yards per catch from 5 catches and 213 yards. Three of his five catches went to the house.
This list just keeps on getting more and more explosive. Perhaps the most explosive runner of the bunch his Weequahic’s Marshall. Ready for these stats? Marshall has 41 rushing attempts for 615 yards and 11 touchdowns. This boils down to a whopping 15 yards per carry and a touchdown every 4th carry. Marshall has also caught 3 passes for 77 yards and a score. It is worth noting that the Indians are 3-0 and won by scores of 50-0, 42-0, and 63-0. That said, I imagine Marshall has not yet to play a full game.
Closing out today’s watch list is yet another run-first quarterback. Building off of last year’s 129 carry 1184 yard and 14 touchdown campaign, Linden’s Thomas is off to an incredible start. Through 4 games Thomas has rushed 70 times for 687 yards and 9 touchdowns; meanwhile, when called to drop back and pass Thomas has been 21 of 26 for 151 yards and 1 touchdown and converted 1, two-point conversion. Due to much of his efforts, the Tigers are off to a 3-1 start with their only loss being a 1-point loss at Woodbridge.
