Here is a breakdown of the top teams and players in the South Coast League entering the 2023 season.
CAPISTRANO VALLEY
Top players: Tommy Acosta Tommy Acosta 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Capistrano Valley | 2025 State CA , QB, Jr.; Hudson Campbell, WR/LB, Jr.; Ethan Jarvis, WR/DB, Sr.; Jackson Sievers Jackson Sievers 6'2" | 220 lbs | LB Capistrano Valley | 2024 State CA , LB, Sr.; Michael Sturdivant, OL, Jr.; Reily Walker, RB/WR/B, Jr
Analysis: Capo Valley is young at key positions and lacks experience, but they are a scrappy team that gave big programs headaches in passing league tournaments this summer. Tommy Acosta Tommy Acosta 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Capistrano Valley | 2025 State CA started the last two games of the season and is back at quarterback. He has some playmakers at receiver in Hudson Campbell and Ryan Isenhart Ryan Isenhart 6'4" | 230 lbs | TE Capistrano Valley | 2024 State CA . Jackson Sievers Jackson Sievers 6'2" | 220 lbs | LB Capistrano Valley | 2024 State CA is the only player with Division 1 offers so far and is one of the better linebackers in the league. While Capo Valley will not compete for a league championship, they will not be an easy win for the other teams in the league. My bold prediction is the that Cougars will be 7-0 entering league play.
MISSION VIEJO
Top players: Travis Anderson Travis Anderson 6'0" | 175 lbs | DB Mission Viejo | 2024 State CA , WR/DB, Sr.; Phillip Bell Phillip Bell 6'2" | 195 lbs | WR Mission Viejo | 2025 State CA , WR/DB, Jr.; Dijon Lee Dijon Lee 6'3" | 180 lbs | DB Mission Viejo | 2025 State CA , DB, Jr.; Jack Matranga Jack Matranga 6'1" | 210 lbs | LB Mission Viejo | 2024 State CA , LB, Sr.; Titus Miller Titus Miller 6'2" | 260 lbs | DL Mission Viejo | 2024 State CA , DL, Sr.; Mark Schroller Mark Schroller 6'6" | 285 lbs | OL Mission Viejo | 2024 State CA , OL, Sr.; Trey Tolmaire Trey Tolmaire 5'11" | 165 lbs | DB Mission Viejo | 2024 State CA , DB, Sr.
Analysis: Mission Viejo lost some marquee players but is once again the class of the league this year. The secondary is stacked with Division 1 talent in Boise State commits Travis Anderson Travis Anderson 6'0" | 175 lbs | DB Mission Viejo | 2024 State CA and Trey Tolmaire Trey Tolmaire 5'11" | 165 lbs | DB Mission Viejo | 2024 State CA , and elite junior prospects Phillip Bell Phillip Bell 6'2" | 195 lbs | WR Mission Viejo | 2025 State CA and Dijon Lee Dijon Lee 6'3" | 180 lbs | DB Mission Viejo | 2025 State CA . Jack Matranga Jack Matranga 6'1" | 210 lbs | LB Mission Viejo | 2024 State CA is a tackling machine at linebacker and the defensive line has Titus Miller Titus Miller 6'2" | 260 lbs | DL Mission Viejo | 2024 State CA and Jaden Williams Jaden Williams 6'4" | 240 lbs | DL Mission Viejo | 2025 State CA . Offensively, there is a lot of inexperience at the skill positions. The offensive line is strong with UCLA commit Mark Schroller Mark Schroller 6'6" | 285 lbs | OL Mission Viejo | 2024 State CA , Daxton Christman-Gourley Daxton Christman-Gourley 6'6" | 260 lbs | OL Mission Viejo | 2024 State CA and three-year starter Reed Lancaster at center. The receiving corps is led by Bell and a pair of sophomores in Vance Spafford Vance Spafford 5'11" | 175 lbs | WR Mission Viejo | 2026 State CA and Markus Kier Markus Kier 6'2" | 185 lbs | WR Mission Viejo | 2026 State CA . Mission Viejo has a strong pair of returning running backs in Hinesward Lilomaiava and Chase Valousky. The Diablos are the favorite to win the league.
SAN CLEMENTE
Top players: Ben Baker, OL/DL, Sr.; Connor Bachhuber Connor Bachhuber 6'5" | 250 lbs | DL San Clemente | 2024 State CA , OL/DL, Sr.; Dylan Mills Dylan Mills 6'2" | 205 lbs | QB San Clemente | 2024 State CA , QB, Sr.; Broderick Redden Broderick Redden 6'5" | 225 lbs | TE San Clemente | 2024 State CA , TE/DL, Sr.; Drew Shanley Drew Shanley 5'10" | 180 lbs | WR San Clemente | 2024 State CA , WR, Sr.; Holden Stakston, WR, Sr.
Analysis: San Clemente is a good mix of returning starters and fresh faces. The Tritons have finally settled on a quarterback in Dylan Mills Dylan Mills 6'2" | 205 lbs | QB San Clemente | 2024 State CA and converted Broderick Redden Broderick Redden 6'5" | 225 lbs | TE San Clemente | 2024 State CA to tight end where he is picking up steam as a recruit. Mills has a good receiving corps in Drew Shanley Drew Shanley 5'10" | 180 lbs | WR San Clemente | 2024 State CA , Max Kotiranta Max Kotiranta 5'11" | 175 lbs | ATH San Clemente | 2025 State CA and Holden Stakston. Running back Lee Fuimaono Lee Fuimaono 6'1" | 215 lbs | ATH San Clemente | 2025 State CA transferred back to San Clemente after spending a year at Santa Margarita. San Clemente also added a major recruit in safety Matai Tagoa’i Matai Tagoa’i 6'4" | 195 lbs | DB San Clemente | 2025 State CA from Faith Lutheran of Nevada. San Clemente has the top end talent to compete for a league championship, but depth may be an issue for the Tritons as the season goes on.
TESORO
Top players: Cash O’Byrne Cash O’Byrne 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Tesoro | 2025 CA , QB, Jr.; Dalton Hurd, LB, Sr.; Roman Mercado, DL/P, Sr. Todd Nelson, WR, Sr.; Travis Wood Travis Wood 5'10" | 215 lbs | RB Tesoro | 2024 State CA , RB, Sr.
Analysis: The big star for Tesoro is returning running back Travis Wood Travis Wood 5'10" | 215 lbs | RB Tesoro | 2024 State CA who is committed to Air Force. He is a physical runner that wears defenses down and can turn a 3-yard run into a 7-yard run. Wood was the leading rusher in the league last season and should have another big year. Cash O’Byrne Cash O’Byrne 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Tesoro | 2025 CA is back at quarterback after starting the second half of the season as a sophomore. Dalton Hurd and Alex Zeppos lead the defense and Zeppos recently got an offer from the University of Chicago. Tesoro lacks the big names on both sides of the ball, but is always well-coached and can hang with most teams in the county.
