First we will review offensive and defensive prospects that shined during the combine, athletes who appear physically ready to play college football, and conclude with positional breakdowns of the talent on-hand. These breakdowns are only from my subjective on-site observations. They do not take into consideration film, highlights, or anything else.
Incase you missed any event coverage, here are the articles currently published related to the AVC Mega Football Camp:
Williams mobilizes into the backfield faster than the Minutemen did in 1776. How? With a tremendous get off. Williams had one of the twitchiest and most sudden get offs that I noticed amongst all defensive lineman in attendance. He leverages this to get an outstanding jump on offensive linemen, instantly getting them on skates. Williams possesses outstanding athleticism too. He was a combine leader with a 111.5″ broad jump – showing off how explosive and strong he is – and a 4.72 second 40-yard dash – showing how fast he is. Quickness and power: need I say more?
Big men who can motor cause headaches between the B gaps for an offense. That is how disruptive Strouse has the potential to be. During drill work I was thoroughly impressed with how quick he appeared to be in tight spaces. Strouse has the discipline to not knife too far into the backfield, yet immediately stop on a dime. This allowed him to get flat down the LOS. Translating this to game play, it would imply that Strouse does a great job pursing and squeezing the cutback lane out of run plays.
Perry has the requisite size to play just about any position on either side of the line. He has a tall, lean frame that can explode and become jacked with a good offseason. In addition to his physical stature, Perry showed flashes of emerging hips. When working on the cans, he managed to stay relatively close to them and lead with his hip as he worked around them. Perry also did a nice job of replacing his lead foot with his trail foot.
While many of his teammates may get the acclaim from the more glorified skill spots, Barnes is a stalwart in the middle for Red Bank Catholic. Skilled and disciplined, Barnes made great reads against offensive linemen when in competition. He reacted to what they were doing and responded correctly. Additionally, Barnes makes appropriate adjustments-to-adjustments that his matchup makes. In other words, he showed the ability to counter the counter en route to winning the rep.
