Now, the QBs on this list, with the exception of one, have all started for their team at some point in 2022. So, heading into the 2023 season, these players now have at least a year of Varsity experience with three full offseasons under their belt. It is, without a doubt, an exciting time for the class of 2025. Now, let’s go over five of my favorite breakout QBs!
Jonathan Pittman Jonathan Pittman 6'1" | 205 lbs | QB Mona Shores | 2025 State MI | Mona Shores | Hudl
For a while now, Pittman has been on my breakout list. Having started for Mona Shores this past season, he was put through the wringer with a few early-season tests. Throughout the season, Pittman became increasingly confident in his own abilities, and it showed with improved performances and dominant victories. This is a guy I’ve rarely seen talked about outside of West Michigan, and I am confident he’ll turn heads this fall.
Ryan Counts Ryan Counts QB Groves | 2025 MI | Groves | Hudl
I’ve seen Ryan here and there, and I’ve seen him enough to know that he’s incredibly dynamic and hard-working. This is a dual-threat who can really sling it, and he’s performed great at multiple camps this offseason. Ryan’s tape shows some good pocket presence, touch throws, mobility, and had an impressive stat line. It also seems that he’s improved his overall accuracy and IQ this offseason, which you love to see. I could see Groves being quite good this season and I could see Ryan dominating on another semifinal run.
Ryan LaFear Ryan LaFear 6'0" | 175 lbs | QB Anchor Bay | 2025 State MI | Anchor Bay | Hudl
Ryan LaFear Ryan LaFear 6'0" | 175 lbs | QB Anchor Bay | 2025 State MI is one of the highest risers of this offseason. Every time I’ve seen Ryan, he’s been one of the top performers. His form is fluid, and he’s able to make any throw you ask of him. I can’t tell you how many times Ryan slung a ball into an incredibly tight window and had college coaches very impressed. Anchor Bay seems to lean on the passing game quite a bit, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what Ryan is able to accomplish. I see a DII college future for him!
McKale McDowell McKale McDowell 5'10" | 165 lbs | QB River Rouge | 2025 State MI | River Rouge | Hudl
The first full season with McKale under center should be electric. He played super well last season, and he’ll come into this season leading a state-championship favorite. McKale is a Kyler Murray-type QB that also has a real good IQ for a high shool QB, and I think he overall makes smarter decisions than QBs in the recent past. McKale can run it, get the ball out quickly, evade pressure, and straight-up make plays. I’m currently not dead set on his college outlook, but this season will surely shed light on his future.
Brody Betser Brody Betser 6'2" | 205 lbs | QB Caledonia | 2025 State MI | Caledonia | Hudl
Brody is one of the most highly-anticipated new starting QBs, and for very good reason. The new-ish offensive system from Caledonia was started with Mason McKenzie, and it worked to near perfection. Brody seems to bring a ton of the same traits that Mason did with the PA rollouts, designed runs, etc. It’s notable that Brody has been working his tail off every offseason, and everyone I’ve spoken with says this kid is ready for the big show. If Brody is as good as advertised, then Cal can finally win an elusive OK-Red title!
