Continue ReadingThe wide receiver group in the class of 2024 has tons of talent, and many of those players are already receiving some solid college interest. However, outside of some of the top players in the state, we have some super unique situations amongst our players to watch. Some players down the rankings have some proven production at a solid level but lack one or two important traits to be considered a top player in the state. In contrast, others should be able to jump to that next level with bigger roles this season. This position has a ton of talent, so I included five sleeper prospects instead of the 2-3 for other position groupings. After all, there are 28 WRs ranked in the class of 24, with even more talent sitting on the watchlist.
The Top Wide Receiver
Korey Duff Jr Korey Duff Jr 6’6″ | 205 lbs | WR St. Anthony’s | 2024 State NY is not only the best wide receiver in the state but he is the best player in New York. If you have any uncertainty about Duff Jr just go watch what he did in the NYCHSFL AAA Championship Game here. Duff Jr is dominant and while he could transition to tight end at the next level he lines up at receiver for St. Anthony’s so that is where he gets ranked. Duff Jr has elite length and size, his ability to high point the football, and make contested catches. Duff Jr is a really solid route runner and can create seperation at all levels of the field. Duff Jr is an electric playmaker and his catch radius is not only on an elite level for New York but for the entire nation. Duff Jr also is a really solid blocker in space as a receiver and can be an effective lead blocker both on screens and outside run plays. Duff Jr simply has little to no holes in his game and I would expect another dominant season from the St. Anthony’s star even though his QB Dante Torres Dante Torres 6’3″ | 190 lbs | QB St. Anthony’s | 2023 State NY will graduate.

Five Prospects to Know
Syair Torrence Syair Torrence 5’11” | 195 lbs | ATH CBA-Syracue | 2024 State NY , the only 2024 player already committed is one of the smoothest route runners in the state. The top upstate NY receiver Torrence is electing to stay home as of now at Syracuse. Torrence is elite at creating seperation at all three levels of the field and his savvy route running often makes him one of the most wide open targets in New York. Torrence has very good athleticism and does a great job of creating yards after the catch both on longer throws and in the shorter area of the field. One of Torrences best traits is his ability to make extremely difficult catches. Torrence has elite ball tracking skills down the field and is a hands catcher who routinely is making extremely difficult catches. On tape there may not be more complete receiver in terms of ability to excel well in every area you want your wide receiver too.

Tyrell Simmons Tyrell Simmons 6’3″ | 190 lbs | WR University Prep | 2024 State NY could have the highest ceiling of the entire receiver group in New York State and that says a lot considering the talent at the position. Simmons has the perfect WR build at 6’3, 195lbs with a little room to add some muscle. As a player Simmons has that dominant “it” factor when it comes to attacking the ball and making plays. Simmons was in an offense at University Prep that featured so many quality playmakers that the ball was spread around very often so his numbers do not jump off the stat sheet. But his impact and overall sheer ability as a receiver is incredible. He has great awareness and his footwork both off the snap and down the field making catches against the sideline or in the end zone is elite. Simmons has elite jumping ability and routinely dominates 50/50 ball throws. When Simmons gets that sort of throw it really is more like 80/20 towards Simmons. Simmons also is a solid route runner, he has a good double move and has shown on tape he can create seperation at the intermediate level of the field. Simmons is also a very willing and solid blocker as a receiver.

If there is any receiver in New York who is primed to take a massive jump from his junior season to his senior season Jahi Gary Jahi Gary 6’5″ | 200 lbs | WR Archbishop Stepniac | 2024 State NY is your best bet. Gary showcased some rare traits and ability this past season but was playing with an offense that featured a ton of weapons at receiver and tight end. This season Archbishop Stepinac graduates 3 of its top 4 receivers from last season with the lone remainder being Gary. Gary and top NY QB Will Currid Will Currid 6’2″ | 195 lbs | QB Archbishop Stepinac | 2024 State NY should be the best returning QB/WR duo in the state and Gary could end up statistically backing up the traits and play he shows on tape. Gary is a long target at 6’5 but he can create seperation at the intermediate and deep level of the field. Gary does a really good job of finding longer throws and positioning himself to make the catch. While the Stepinac offense features a ton of short area throws Gary was their homerun threat. He is incredible at making catches on back shoulder throws or throws down the field where adjustments to the throw and defender need to be made. Gary is primed for a huge season at Stepinac.

Nick Souffrin Nick Souffrin 6’1″ | 190 lbs | WR Monsignor Farrell | 2024 State NY was one of the most dominant receivers in New York for Monsignor Farrell in the NYCHSFL. Souffrin has elite speed and is one of the best YAC receivers in this class. Souffrin does a great job of winning his routes off the LOS and immediately is a threat once he turns up field. One of the best short and intermediate route runners in the class Souffrin is a true threat all all three levels of the field. Souffrin also does a great job of beating press coverage using quickness and footwork off the line of scrimmage. Souffrin has shown that one of his best traits is being able to track and adjust to balls down field. Souffrin’s tape is loaded with back shoulder throws and balls down the field where adjustments have to be made mid route.
Highlights
Jayden Wright Jayden Wright 6’0″ | 165 lbs | WR Curtis | 2024 State NY is one of the best returning playmakers in the PSAL where his dominant speed and quickness are showcased throughout his seasons tape. Wright is a really solid route runner but after the catch makes really solid adjustments to create yards after the catch. Wright is also a very solid returner where his ability to make defenders miss in space is showcased. Wright does a really good job of making one or two defenders miss and focusing on getting directly up the field. Wright also is good at positioning himself in really solid position to make tough catches over defenders. Wright also has great footwork, on the sidelines he gets his feet down but is one of the most exciting players to watch along the boundary where he can make guys miss and get easy extra yards.
Sleepers To Keep An Eye On
Dylan Iorgoveanu Dylan Iorgoveanu 6’1″ | 190 lbs | WR Iona Prep | 2024 State NY s a really smooth athlete that has lined up both as a tight end and wide receiver for Iona Prep. Iorgoveanu is a solid route runner and does a good job of being a sure handed receiver. With a couple of graduations in Iona Prep’s receiving corps Iorgoveanu should have a bigger role this season where his numbers could match his ability. Iorgoveanu does a good job at creating seperation at the short and intermediate levels of the field and has a really good understanding and finding open space against zone coverage. Iorgoveanu is one of those receivers is still finding that elite trait where he can dominate but right now is extremely well-rounded and does now display any major weaknesses. One of the best overall receivers in New York that could have a strong season with a bigger role.
DJ Lisbon DJ Lisbon 6’4″ | 180 lbs | WR St. John The Baptist | 2024 State NY continues the theme of a dominant class of 2024 pass catchers who showcase elite length and the ability to make contest catches down the field. Lisbon does a good job not only using that size and stature to his advantage but has some really underrated quickness and twitch for his size. Lisbon has really solid releases of the line of scrimmage and is very impressive after the catch. Lisbon does a good job of winning of the line of scrimmage than tracking the ball down the field when in press man coverage. Lisbon also has really good sideline awareness where he is really good at getting his feet down in bounds and securing the catch. I would like to see Lisbon create some more seperation at every level of the field but right now his catch radius and ability to make contested catches are up their with the best receivers in this class.

The speedster from Erasmus Hall happens to get limited touches for a primarily run first offense but Judah Wright Judah Wright 5’7″ | 160 lbs | WR Erasmus Hall | 2024 State NY makes those touches count. Wright has elite speed and quickness and he has shown he can be a quality gadget player that succeeds getting the ball in space. I actually really like Wrights route running and think he has the skillset to be more involved in the passing game down the field. Wright may be a little smaller but he runs hard and he is slippery through tackles, he actually is solid and getting through the first or second attempt to bring him down and use his speed to add yards quick. Wright showcases a really solid skillset on tape just more volume would help him rise up our rankings. Definitely a player to watch considering there are not many players let alone receivers who can match his speed.
Highlights
Cleveland Charlton Cleveland Charlton 6’5″ | 185 lbs | WR Cardinal Hayes | 2024 State NY may be an outlier on this list in terms of production but he certainly oozes potential. Charlton should be pushed into a larger role for Cardinal Hayes and the 6’5 target could become a quality threat for the Hayes offense. Charlton has good speed and his long stride will help him create seperation down the field. Charlton has already showcased on tape he can make contested catches and that he has a large catch radius. For Charlton, the next step is really taking on that role of becoming the top target for Cardinal Hayes and improving on creating seperation at all three levels. The tools are their for Charlton so this season should be an exciting one and you could see Charlton shoot up our rankings with a much more consistent season where he one of the main factors in the offense.
Jameson Quinn Jameson Quinn 5’9″ | 175 lbs | WR Fredonia | 2024 State NY is one of the most underrated receivers in this class, Quinn is an elite receiver when it comes to his feel for the game and how to get open. While Quinn has plenty of tape getting open far down the field his ability to create seperation in the short area of the field is elite. Quinn does lack size for the next level so his projection will be living in the slot but he displays all the traits you would want out of a slot guy at the next level. Really good hands with the ability to adjust at the catch point. Quinn may lack elite speed but he makes up for it with great quickness and a really solid quick twitch ability.
