The Class 6A-1 state championship game is set for Friday night at 7PM in Edmond as #3 Bixby will face off with #6 Owasso. These two teams met all the way back in late August to kick off the 2022 football season. And they’ll meet again on Friday night to decide the state champion in the state’s largest class. In this post, we’re taking a look at some of the Bixby Spartans that you need to know about heading into Friday night’s game. Keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma for more 6A-1 state championship content before, during and following the game on Friday night!
At this time last year, Bixby quarterback Connor Kirby Connor Kirby 6’2″ | 190 lbs | ATH Bixby | 2023 State OK was only used as a running quarterback. He would make a few plays in the state championship win over Deer Creek. This year, Kirby has evolved into a true dual-threat quarterback and will be leading the Spartan offense into their game with Bixby. Kirby has thrown 26 touchdowns this year while adding 14 touchdowns on the ground. He performed well in the season-opening win over the Rams back in late August. But he was still splitting time at quarterback. Now as the full-time guy, Kirby is able to have a much greater impact on the game. And you look at what he’s done in the last three games, specifically in the two meetings with Jenks, he’s playing some of his best football right now.
One of the more underrated parts of the Bixby dynasty is all the different families that have had multiple kids that have not only played but been absolute stars in the Bixby program. There’s been a few and the Pucketts are the latest. The last two years, Jack Puckett (now at UCO) has been one of the best linebackers in the state and now his younger brother Hank has stepped into that role this year. Just a junior, Puckett leads the Spartans in tackles, tackles for loss and sacks. He has not only enjoyed a breakout season, he leads a linebacker group that we believe is the hardest-hitting group of linebackers in the state. Now, similar to the family dynamic, hard-hitting linebackers seems to be a calling card of every Bixby team during this state championship run they’re on.
It feels like Bixby running back and linebacker Jersey Robb Jersey Robb 6’2″ | 200 lbs | ATH Bixby | 2023 State OK has been making plays for the Spartans for six or seven years now. One of the best wrestlers in the state, Robb plays like it on the football field. Whether it’s as a running back who is nearly impossible to bring down in a 1 on 1 situation, or on defense when he is one of the hardest hitting guys on the team, Robb has made a tremendous impact on the Spartans this season. On offense, Robb has been one of Bixby’s top threats in the run game. He had a terrific performance against the Rams when these two teams met back in August. And he’s also coming off a semifinal win over Jenks where he shined on offense and defense. Robb has been one of the more important pieces to Bixby’s run this season.
Coming into this season, one big question would surround replacing a player like Braylin Presley and who would step into the role of being an explosive playmaker. That player has ended up being junior playmaker Kordell Gouldsby Kordell Gouldsby 5’11” | WR Bixby | 2024 State OK . While he’s more of a wide receiver and doesn’t spend too much time in the backfield, Gouldsby does fit that mold of an electric player when the ball is in his hands. he’s become one of Bixby’s leading receivers and he’s also a big threat in the return game in special teams. And as we’ve mentioned in the past, it’s just good to see Gouldsby healthy and still playing after he had his freshman and sophomore season cut short to injuries. He’s been able to remain healthy throughout this season and he’s shown what he can do because of it.
And you can’t have a “Players To Watch” post without mentioning Bixby’s All American tight end Luke Hasz Luke Hasz 6’4″ | TE Bixby | 2023 State OK . One of the best prospects in the state, Hasz is one of the best tight ends in the country and has shown why throughout the last three years. He had a breakout season as a sophomore where he was a big part of the passing game. And then this season and last, you’ve watched Hasz show why he’s the complete prospect as a tight end. Not only can he catch just about everything you throw to him and then make plays after the catch, he is one of the best blockers on the team. You can just tell when you watch Hasz play that he enjoys the physicality of football and he seeks it out. So no surprise that he’s become one of the better blockers on the team.
