Every single Monday on Prep Redzone Oklahoma, we’ll get the week started with a look at the top ten games across the state of Oklahoma. And this week, it’s Fall Break across the states for most school districts. With that, the majority of the games this week will take place on Thursday. While we still have a few good games on Friday, most of the games on this list are on Thursday night, unless otherwise listed. Check back every Monday as we break down the top ten games every single week during the 2022 regular season.
1) #1 UNION (6-0) AT #3 MUSTANG (5-1)
It’s the game of the week in the state as #3 Mustang will host top-ranked Union on Thursday night. The Broncos will be looking to make one of the loudest statements this year with a win over Union. The winner here will all but lock up the district championship, setting themselves up for an easier path in November. Both teams have dynamic offenses but it will be interesting to see the status of Union quarterback Shaker Reisig Shaker Reisig 6'0" | 185 lbs | QB Union | 2025 State OK . He did not play in their week six win over Norman. If he’s unable to go, Union will still be confident in senior quarterback Grayson Tempest Grayson Tempest 5'11" | WR Union | 2023 State OK filling in for the second straight week. On the other side of the match-up, Mustang has been outstanding on the offensive side of the ball with their senior trio of quarterback Tristen Russell Tristen Russell 5'11" | 175 lbs | QB Mustang | 2023 State OK and wide receivers Jacobe Johnson Jacobe Johnson 6'4" | DB Mustang | 2023 State OK and Keegan Bass Keegan Bass 5'9" | 175 lbs | WR Mustang | 2023 State OK . This game is going
2) #7 CARL ALBERT (5-2) AT #2 BISHOP McGUINNESS (6-0) (FRIDAY)
District 2 in Class 5A is arguably the toughest district in the state and they continue to headline each week of games again this week as #2 Bishop McGuinness hosts #7 Carl Albert on Friday. McGuinness had a little “luck of the Irish” last week as they survived with a game-winning field goal in Guthrie. They don’t have much time to celebrate as they welcome in a Carl Albert team that is starting to hit it’s stride and they’re getting healthy as well. That’s a bad combination for the Irish as they prepare for a game that could very well turn into a shootout when you look at these two offenses. McGuinness has had one of the top offenses in Class 5A this year as they’re very balanced behind quarterback River Warren River Warren 6'4" | 195 lbs | QB Del City | 2024 State OK and running back Mike Taffe Mike Taffe 6'0" | 190 lbs | RB Bishop McGuinness | 2023 State OK . Carl Albert has relied on junior running back Xavier Robinson Xavier Robinson 6'2" | 225 lbs | RB Carl Albert | 2024 State OK and it’s worked as he has well over 1,000 yards on the season.
3) #4 CASCIA HALL (5-1) AT #8 VERDIGRIS (5-1)
It’s bounce-back time for #8 Verdigris as they suffered an upset loss to Bristow on Friday night. This district has become one of the more competitive in Class 3A and it continues this week as the Cardinals welcome in Cascia Hall, who has climbed up to #4 in the recent 4A rankings. This should be a good match-up featuring stout defenses as the Cardinals are led by senior linebacker Reese Roller Reese Roller 6'0" | 210 lbs | LB Verdigris | 2023 State OK , who’s been arguably the most productive linebacker in Oklahoma over the last three years. And then you have Cascia Hall’s famous “Blue Swarm” defense that has athletes everywhere. The Commandos have looked strong since their early season loss to Class 2A #2 Rejoice Christian and they’re looking to take another step towards claiming the district championship. Verdigris can stay in the district title hunt with a win but will all be out of it if they suffer a second straight loss.
4) #7 VINITA (6-0) AT #2 REJOICE CHRISTIAN (6-0)
The only game on this week’s top ten list that features two undefeated teams is in Class 2A as #2 Rejoice Christian will welcome in #7 Vinita. Both teams have had two different paths so far this season. The Eagles came into the year with high expectations, played a brutal early schedule and find themselves as one of the best in Class 2A. Vinita was one of our surprise teams at the halfway mark as they have also started the year 6-0 but Thursday’s game in Owasso will be without a doubt their toughest test of the season so far. This game could very well turn into a shootout as both teams have outstanding senior quarterbacks who have carried their teams so far. Vinita’s Paul Glasscock Paul Glasscock 6'1" | QB Vinita | 2023 State OK has been one of the breakout stars from this season, while Rejoice senior Chance Wilson Chance Wilson 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB Rejoice Christian | 2023 State OK is arguably the frontrunner for this year’s Player Of The Year award. This game is going to be outstanding.
5) #2 POTEAU (5-1) AT #8 BROKEN BOW (5-1)
The first of two big games in Class 4A this week takes place in southeastern Oklahoma as #8 Broken Bow welcomes in #2 Poteau in a district battle that could very well decide the district championship. Broken Bow has looked outstanding after losing to McAlester early on in the season. They haven’t lost since and we’ll end up seeing a clash of styles when these two teams square off. The Savages are led by quarterback Christian Brumley Christian Brumley 6'1" | QB Broken Bow | 2023 State OK , who is having a monster season throwing the ball this season. He’s a senior quarterback that will be climbing the charts in our next 2023 ranking update. While the Savages have a more balanced offense, Poteau will run the ball it’s been working for years. However, in last week’s win over Hilldale, the Pirates were without their star junior running back Dax Collins Dax Collins 6'2" | 180 lbs | ATH Poteau | 2024 State OK . They handled business against the Hornets, but they’ll need Collins back to make another run at the gold ball.
6) CHICKASHA (5-1) AT #5 ELK CITY (5-1)
Staying in Class 4A, but going from southeastern Oklahoma to western Oklahoma, we cannot wait for this clash as Elk City plays host to Chickasha. The Fightin’ Chicks are knocking on the door of the 4A rankings and they’re getting closer and closer to being considered one of the darkhorses in Class 4A. They’ve completely bounced back from their early season stumble against Marlow. Senior Running back Malek Murphy Malek Murphy 6'0" | RB Chickasha | 2023 State OK has been one of the best running backs, not only in Class 4A, but in the state. But they’ll be tested this week as they face an Elk City that’s playing with a lot of momentum. They recently knocked off defending champion Clinton and have become the new favorite in this district. The Elks are hungry to not only make it back to the 4A semifinals, but they want to contend. The winner here will be in the driver’s seat for the district crown.
7) MULDROW (6-1) AT #5 STIGLER (6-0)
In another 3A clash, #5 Stigler will host a Muldrow team that is knocking on the door of the 3A rankings and can make quite the statement with a win on the road this week. Stigler is unbeaten this season and they should be fresh coming into this week as they had a bye week in week six. Stigler’s defense has also been dominant so far this season as they’ve held all of their opponents under 15 points. But they’ll get arguably their toughest test to date this week as they host a Muldrow team that is led by breakout star Trenden Collins Trenden Collins 6'2" | ATH Muldrow | 2023 State OK at the running back position. We’re looking forward to seeing how Collins attacks a Stigler defense that hasn’t given up much to the running game. Nobody has stopped Collins this season either. This begins a three-week stretch that is critical for Stigler as they play Berryhill and top-ranked Lincoln Christian in the following two games.
8) MIDWEST CITY (4-2) AT #10 LAWTON MACARTHUR (5-1)
Midwest City will hit the road to face off with Lawton MacArthur on Thursday night in a game that has big playoff implications in Class 5A. The Bombers started off the season at 0-2 with losses to rivals Carl Albert and Del City. They haven’t lost since and they’re gaining some serious momentum behind the play of the senior quarterback DeAngelo Irvin. But the Bombers are heading into the final four games of the regular season and they are against the four toughest district opponents left on their schedule. On the other side of the match-up is Lawton MacArthur, The Highlanders are #10 in the recent 5A rankings and the only loss they suffered was to a city rival in Lawton as well. The Highlanders have some momentum coming into this week after knocking off Ardmore 28-20 last week. The winner here will get one step closer to a playoff spot and stay alive for the district crown.
9) #4 DEER CREEK (5-1) AT #7 LAWTON (5-1) (FRIDAY)
Deer Creek suffered their first loss of the season last week when they went on the road and fell to Choctaw. The Antlers will look to bounce back when they go on the road to face Lawton on Friday night. On the other side of the match-up, the Wolverines bounced back from their first loss of the season to Ponca City with a win over Northwest Classen. The Wolverines have reached the busiest part of the schedule as they face Deer Creek and Choctaw in back to back weeks. Lawton’s offense has looked pretty strong throughout the season and they’ll look to attack Deer Creek’s outstanding secondary. And for Deer Creek, their offense was very limited in the loss to Choctaw as the Yellowjackets were able to dominate the line of scrimmage. They’ll look to get back on track when they face off with the Wolverines on Friday.
10) #5 JENKS (4-2) AT #10 MOORE (4-2) (FRIDAY)
Well this game just got a lot more interesting after last night’s outcomes. Jenks was stunned at home, losing 31-21 to Norman North in week six. Now they try to bounce back on the road against Moore. The Lions dropped their first two district games after starting the season 3-0 but they absolutely dominated rival Southmoore in week six. The Trojans struggled containing Norman North’s dual-threat quarterback and they’ll face another one in Moore senior quarterback Denver Wolfe Denver Wolfe 5'11" | QB Moore | 2023 State OK . While he doesn’t have the same physical stature as Norman North’s QB, he does have the production. He’s thrown for 22 touchdowns and 1,500 yards and has one rushing touchdown in the last five games. The Trojans have been dealing with injuries all season and they’ve struggled to get any momentum so far this year. They’ll look to change that this week on the road against Moore.
