It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July, we are publishing 100 team previews to get you ready for the 2022 season. This is something that began last year and has become even bigger and better this year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champs, to top contenders and dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A down to A. In this post, we take a look at the Washington Warriors. The Warriors are atop the preseason rankings in Class 2A going into this fall.
Washington Warriors (2A Preseason Ranking: #1)
The Washington Warriors come into this season as the top ranked team in Class 2A and they’re getting real tired of silver. The Warriors have made it to the last two state championship games in Class 2A and they’ve had to walk away with the silver ball. The Warriors were in a fight with Marlow last year in a battle of unbeaten teams. They were driving to take the lead with less than two minutes left and fumbled in Outlaw territory and without any timeouts, Marlow captured the gold ball with a 17-13 win. Washington had over 300 yards of total offense and held Marlow to just 126 yards offensively but came up short on the scoreboard. This came a year after losing to Metro Christian in a shootout.
Now, the Warriors turn their attention to 2022 and are determined to end the season once again in Edmond but this time, they plan on walking off the field with a gold ball. The Warriors are the preseason favorites in Class 2A as they bring back eight starters on offense and another seven starters on defense. Throw in the fact that defending champion Marlow has moved up to Class 2A and all eyes are on the Warriors heading into this season. Washington’s defense was one of the best in Class 2A last season and they finished out the regular season giving up just 12 points in their final five games and that includes three shutouts. One of the biggest hurdles for the Warriors this fall will be replacing all of the production lost at the wide receiver position. But with just about everyone else back on offense, they should be just fine.

was one of the breakout stars from last season. He had a season to remember as he finished with nearly 2,000 yards on the ground and 31 touchdowns. Despite the team falling short in the title game, Scott had a great game and comes into this season looking to be one of the top running backs in the state. With the Warriors losing some of their top playmakers at wide receiver, the door will be open for Scott to have more of a role within the offense this fall.

Washington’s offense was absolutely electric last season but the defense was outstanding over the last half of the regular season. We mentioned that stretch over the last five weeks of the regular season and leading the way up front was 2023 defensive lineman

was the QB leading the way and finished his sophomore season throwing for over 2,500 yards and 34 touchdowns and was very efficient within the Washington offense. As mentioned earlier, one of the biggest challenges for Washington is all the production they lose at the wide receiver position but bringing back their young quarterback will help.

already has multiple D1 offers and the Power 5 programs are starting to take notice over the last few weeks. Last year, as a freshman, Roberts got into the lineup and finished the season with 4 sacks. But it’s on the offensive side of the ball that Roberts has the chance to be at his best. He’s being recruited as a tight end and with Cantrell needing new targets to throw the ball to, we expect Roberts to be one of their leading receivers.

2022 Schedule/Games To Circle
Aug. 26 – AT Vian
– The more previews we publish, the more schedules we see and we have some fantastic match-ups in week zero that feature top five teams facing off head to head. Washington will be hitting the road in late August and heading east to take on Vian, who comes in at #5 in our 2A preseason rankings. This is a head to head match-up featuring two of the better 2A programs over the last decade and coincidentally, despite being two top programs in Class 2A, this will be the first time that they’ve met. The match-up also features two of the better running backs in 2A and both teams will want to get their seasons off on the right track.
Sept. 2 – Sulphur
Sept. 9 – AT Jones
Sept. 23 – Frederick
Sept. 30 – AT Community Christian
– Coming into this season, Washington and Community Christian are the top two teams in this district and in late September they’ll meet head to head and the district champion could very well be decided. During the regular season last year, the Warriors were absolutely dominant and they just trucked nine of their ten regular season opponents. The only opponent that gave the Warriors problems was Community Christian. They beat everyone else during the regular season by 20+ points but against Community Christian, they survived to win 13-10.
Oct. 7 – Crooked Oak
Oct. 13 – AT Lindsay
Oct. 21 – Purcell
Oct. 28 – AT Comanche
Nov. 4 – Little Axe
Notable
Washington has been one of the more consistent powers in Class 2A football as they’ve made 31 consecutive playoff appearances. In 2020, they became the eighth program in state history to make the playoffs in 30 consecutive seasons. The Warriors are among five teams that have active streaks of 30+ playoff appearances going into this year and will attempt to continue them this fall. The other programs are Cascia Hall, Jenks, Tuttle and Union. All four are expected to continue their streaks and the Warriors are as well. However, unlike those four teams, Washington only has one state championship during their streak. Cascia Hall’s streak is now at 35 consecutive seasons and that is a state record.
