Last week saw a lot of great games including one of the biggest wins in state history out of Wyomissing, snapping Southern Columbia’s historic 93-game regular season winning streak. This week, the schedule isn’t as deep but still has plenty of strong matchups throughout the state. We picked seven to keep our eyes on;
Allentown Central Catholic vs Nazareth:
The premier matchup in the EPC this week should be a fantastic game between one of the league’s best defenses and one of the league’s top offenses. Nazareth has been terrific offensively, averaging 36.6 points per game while Allentown Central Catholic has been just as great defensively, allowing 15.5 points per game this season.
Central York vs Spring Grove:
A matchup between the 6-0 Central york Panthers and 5-0 Spring Grove Rockets should be another great game. The Panthers are marching through their schedule including a 60-0 win over South Western last weekend. They’re beating opponents by an average score of 36-12 but will face their toughest opponent yet in Spring Grove. Spring Grove similarly has handled business easily so far this season but will they be able to contain a talented Central York offense consisting of quarterback Beau Pribula Beau Pribula 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Central York | 2022 State PA (72% completion percentage, 1,131-yards, 15 touchdowns, 207 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns), running back Ajani Walker (40 carries, 229-yards, three touchdowns), and wide receiver Teyshawn Smith (22 receptions, 447-yards, and four touchdowns). That remains to be foreseen but we will find out tonight.
Governor Mifflin vs Exeter:
Exeter to this point of the season has been the only school to give Central York a truly tough time and now they’ll look to hand Governor Mifflin their first loss of the season. Nicholas Singleton Nicholas Singleton 6'0" | 205 lbs | RB Governor Mifflin Senior | 2022 State PA has already amassed 1,022-yards and 20 touchdowns on the season while averaging 12.1 yards per carry. Numbers that put him in elite company not just in the state but across the nation. Exeter is a very good team but no one has found a way to stop Singleton yet.
Strath Haven vs Conestoga:
Both schools are currently tied for second in the Central League rankings, behind Garnet Valley who sits at 6-0 entering this weekend. While both schools have also lost to Garnet Valley already this season, this game will play an important role in ultimately deciding who takes on Garnet Valley in the Central League Championship game.
North Schuylkill vs Notre-Dame Green Pond
One of the state’s top signal-callers in Colin Quintano will be playing in this one and will be the biggest player to watch in this one which is the premier game in the Colonial-Schuylkill Conference this season. Both schools enter this game undefeated at 6-0 (North Schuylkill) and 5-0 (NDGP) have very similar dominated opponents. Both schools have some of the state’s most elite offenses, averaging 41.6 (North Schuylkill) and 46.2 (NDGP) points respectively. Quintano has been spectacular this season, proving to us why he’s one of the top quarterbacks in the state regardless of position, he’s averaging 325.6 passing yards per game and has amassed 1,628-yards and 20 touchdowns through five games. No matter how this week’s matchup goes, it wouldn’t be shocking if we see both teams face each other down the line again this postseason.
Bedford vs Central
I’ve given the eastern part of Pennsylvania enough love this week, it’s time to give western Pennsylvania some love as well. This is going to be a hard-fought game between two 6-0 teams looking to stay atop the Laurel Highlands Conference. This will be a true slobberknocker from start to finish and could go down to the final possession of the game. This one may come down to Bedford being able to keep Central quarterback Jeff Hoenstine Jeff Hoenstine 5'10" | 175 lbs | QB Central | 2023 State PA in check but with him averaging nearly 250-yards per game, that will be one tall task.
Central Catholic vs Mt. Lebanon
The final game of our week seven games to watch is the premier game in the WPIAL this weekend. Mt. Lebanon enters the game at 6-0 but this will be by far their toughest matchup. Central Catholic on the other hand has won five straight since losing to Imhotep Charter to start the season and have allowed seven points or less in four of their five wins this season. Can they keep up that defense against an explosive Mt. Lebanon offense averaging, 38.5 points per game? This is going to be an absolute thriller.
