Every Sunday, we’ll look at some of the top individual performances from the week that was in high school football. And typically, we will limit it to ten selections but we also make the rules and can therefore bend the rules. So if we see a week where individuals just go off and we need to feature more “stat sheet stuffers” we absolutely will do that. And this week is one of those weeks! This is part two of a two part feature today where we’ll look at a total of 20 standouts from week one. In case you missed Part One, check it out RIGHT HERE.
But no matter how many we feature, we will always be right here on Sunday’s, looking at the best performances from the previous week in high school football. As always, you can tweet your picks to us on Twitter @PrepRedzoneOK or email your picks to michael@prepredzone.com. Be sure not to just include the individual but also include the stats!
Austin Havens

Havens

Bixby | 2023
State
OK
– 2023 Quarterback – Owasso
20-34 | 386 Yards | 3 Touchdowns
For the second straight week, the Owasso offense couldn’t be slowed down and they needed every point to escape their week one battle against Fayetteville. Quarterback Austin Havens Austin Havens 6'3" | 205 lbs | QB Bixby | 2023 State OK threw for nearly 400 yards and three touchdowns as the Rams got out of week one with the 48-42 victory. Havens has taken his game to the next level early on in his junior season and is making the jump that we anticipated after seeing him a few times this offseason. With a plethora of weapons around him, Havens will be tough to stop.
Brayden Dorney – 2023 Wide Receiver – Norman North
7 Catches | 186 Yards | 3 Touchdowns
We mentioned Norman North quarterback Gavin Frakes Gavin Frakes 6'4" | 210 lbs | QB Norman North | 2022 State OK in Part One of our Top Performer breakdown. His top target on Thursday was junior wide receiver Brayden Dorney. The junior finished with nearly 200 yards receiving and three touchdowns on seven receptions. Norman North has a very explosive offense and Dorney is a great candidate to be a breakout star this fall. We didn’t know much about him going into the year but he made sure to get everyone’s attention in their first game.
Carson Trimble

Grove | 2023
State

– 2023 Quarterback – Grove
14-21 | 171 Yards | 3 Touchdowns | 75 Rushing Yards
Another junior quarterback who had a great game was Grove quarterback Carson Trimble Carson Trimble 6'1" | QB Grove | 2023 State OK . Really the backfield duo of Trimble and junior running back Emmanuel Crawford Emmanuel Crawford 5'10" | 170 lbs | RB Grove | 2023 State OK led the way as they dismantled Vinita. He threw for 171 yards and three touchdowns and also added 75 yards on the ground. Crawford added another 200 yards of offense in addition to Trimble’s damage. That duo was certainly a big reason why we have Grove in the 4A top ten and they’re off to a great start.
CJ Brown

Brown
6'1" | RB
Beggs | 2022
State
OK
– 2022 Running Back – Beggs
22 Carries | 363 Yards | 6 Touchdowns
In one of the biggest shootouts of the week, Beggs beat Rejoice Christian 74-48 in a battle of two top ten teams in Class 4A. Beggs leaned on the rushing attack to do all their damage and it worked perfectly. The combination of senior running back and OSU commit CJ Brown CJ Brown 6'1" | RB Beggs | 2022 State OK and sophomore back Red Martel Red Martel 5'11" | 195 lbs | RB Beggs | 2024 State OK could not be stopped. Brown finished with 363 yards and six touchdowns on 22 carries. As for what Martel did, we have him featured later on in this Top Performer breakdown.
Dempsey Gillman – 2022 Linebacker – Metro Christian
12 Tackles | 4 Sacks
Let’s go to the defensive side of the ball for our next standout and we’ll be honest that this one is more of a combination effort. Metro Christian had no problems with NOAH in week one and are now 2-0. In the game, senior linebacker Dempsey Gillman led the team with 12 tackles and four sacks in the victory. He’s also coming off a game against Checotah where he had 8 tackles and three sacks. Gillman, a Wichita State baseball commit, is off to a fantastic start where he has seven sacks in two games.
Matt Lund – 2024 Running Back – Elgin
21 Carries | 253 Yards | 2 Touchdowns | 78 Yard TD Reception
Elgin certainly sent some shockwaves throughout the state on Friday night when they went on the road and put up 55 points in a win over Anadarko. Elgin didn’t win a game in 2020 and started off their 2021 season with a huge win over a 3A ranked Warrior squad. Leading the way was a sophomore running back in Matt Lund. He finished with over 250 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. He also had a 78-yard touchdown reception as Elgin’s offense could not be slowed down.
McKade Peery – 2024 Quarterback – Stigler
11-12 | 189 Yards | 3 Touchdowns | 17 Carries | 158 Yards | 2 Touchdowns
In one of the bigger eye-opening blowouts, Stigler absolutely shelled Adair with a 45-6 victory over the Warriors. It was a young sophomore leading the way and we’ll definitely be remembering this name and keeping an eye on Stigler as sophomore quarterback McKade Peery was a star. He threw for nearly 200 yards and three touchdowns with just one incompletion on the night. He also had over 150 yards of rushing and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Stigler is still a team to watch.
Red Martel
Red
Martel
5'11" | 195 lbs | RB
Beggs | 2024
State
OK
– 2024 Running Back – Beggs
19 Carries | 224 Yards | 4 Touchdowns
You see the numbers, we’ll do the math for you. The Beggs running duo combined for 587 yards and ten touchdowns in their win over Rejoice Christian. I saw the duo first hand in their tough loss to Lincoln Christian and it was obvious that they could be the best duo in the state, despite falling short to Lincoln. Martel adds such a dangerous element in addition to Brown that defenses never get a break. Martel went for well over 200 yards and four touchdowns of his own and is off to a great start to his sophomore year.
River Faulkner
River
Faulkner
5'11" | 205 lbs | ATH
Heritage Hall | 2023
State
OK
– 2023 Running Back/Linebacker – Heritage Hall
21 Carries | 147 Yards | 4 Touchdowns
Heritage Hall got the week off on Thursday night with a big win over Millwood in what was one of the marquee match-up’s of week one. The Chargers handled business behind a strong performance from junior standout River Faulkner River Faulkner 5'11" | 205 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2023 State OK from the running back spot. He did the majority of his damage in the second half but finished with nearly 150 yards and four touchdowns as the Chargers rolled to the win. They’ll have another big test this week as they welcome in Clinton, who is a top five team in Class 4A.
Todd Mattox – 2022 Running Back – Poteau
25 Carries | 249 Yards
Things didn’t go the way Poteau would have liked on Friday night but they still had a strong showing from their rushing attack. Poteau fell short to Arkansas powerhouse Shiloh Christian and dropped to 1-1 on the season. However, senior running back Todd Mattox had an outstanding game as he ran for nearly 250 yards on 25 carries and was a one-man wrecking crew. Similar to a few other programs, Poteau has that reputation of being a run-first team and Mattox led the way Friday.
