Many media members, including myself, wrote off JSerra before the season started. I recall at the Trinity League media day, I was talking to a couple reporters who agreed that JSerra would go 1-9 this season. The Lions are now 3-2 and put forth a dominant defensive effort in a win against Newport Harbor where they held the Sailors to under 100 total yards. Berry had a sack and an interception that he returned for a touchdown in the win. He is a dynamic two-sport athlete who plays on JSerra’s baseball team which is one of the best in the nation. Numerous JSerra defensive players could have been highlighted for great performances last week, but Berry stood out.

Duhron Goodman Duhron Goodman 6'0" | 185 lbs | ATH Valencia | 2022 State CA , Valencia, 2022
Valencia had a nice win over Westlake in a defensive battle last week. Goodman was unquestionably the player of the game. He had an interception, forced a fumble and blocked the go-ahead field goal attempt with 36 seconds left in the game to clinch the win for the Vikings. Goodman is also the leading receiver on Valencia’s team and has an offer from Colorado State.
Congrats Duhron Goodman (Valencia).

Chase Martin, Thousand Oaks, 2023
Thousand Oaks has played more one-score games than most teams in Southern California. They rebounded from a tough one point loss to Segerstrom by beating Newbury Park 20-19. Martin led the Lancers defense with a glaring 19 tackles in the win. He also wasn’t jumping on piles at the whistle to get credit for tackles. 14 of the 19 tackles were solo. Martin is also an excellent long snapper for Thousand Oaks and is a really good high school player.
Sophomore linebacker Chase Martin on making the game-saving tackle on the final play Saturday night to end Thousand Oaks’ 25-game losing streak, and improving to 1-0 as a varsity player. “Undefeated,” he laughed. @TOHSAthletics @TOLancers @ThousandOaksHS pic.twitter.com/d0irxf4n2w

Jerry McGee, Reseda, 2023
The defending City Section Division 1 champions got a nice win over Kennedy of Granada Hills last week. McGee was named one of the LA Daily News most outstanding performers of the week for his performance on both sides of the ball but particularly on defense. McGee had two interceptions for the Regents including one on a drive where Kennedy was driving for the game-winning score. McGee was one of the best players on the field in that game and is capable of making huge plays at any time.
Kennedy’s final drive is ended by an INT from Jerry McGee, his second of the night. McGee has been fantastic. Big plays on offense, including an 85-yard TD catch and two INTs.

Josh Vivonia, El Toro, 2023
El Toro had its most impressive win since 2017 when it beat Tesoro 28-27 last week. A major reason El Toro was able to keep Tesoro off the scoreboard was because of the three interceptions by Vivonia. He returned the interceptions for a combined 68 yards and also had a receiving touchdown on offense. He has five interceptions on the season which is the second most in the Sea View League. El Toro has a huge game against San Juan Hills this week before its bye week.
Final – El Toro 28, Tesoro 27. Jake Vivonia of El Toro clinched the game with an interception with 4 seconds to go, his third INT of the game. El Toro is 6-0. Tesoro 1-4 @ocvarsity @ocvarsityguy @mikehuntley63
