Once again the Tigers from Tuttle are poised to be one of the top Class 4A teams. They’re a disciplined bunch where the sum of parts are greater than the whole. But that doesn’t mean they’re without some individual standouts. Let’s take a look at who the playmakers were from them in their win last Friday night.
Parrish Terry, Senior Offensive/Defensive Lineman
The tall senior was unblockable all night long off the edge for Tuttle. With a good first step, he was often blowing up plays right at the mesh point. What might have been most impressive about the tall senior was his conditioning. On a hot September night, when many players were battling cramp issues, Terry seemed to only become stronger. Three of his tackles for losses came in the second half, including two tone setting tackles for losses on Plainview’s final two possessions.
Canon West, Senior Running Back/Linebacker
West was the touchdown maker the Tigers. Three times he had his number called when inside the five, all three times he found his way into the endzone. He showed good vision hitting holes, and making sure any arm tacklers wouldn’t keep him from reaching paydirt. Like many of the other Tigers, he also logged snaps on the defensive side of the ball. His biggest moment there was a third down tackle for loss on what would end up being Plainview’s final the drive of the game. Fittingly. it was also the physical West who picked up the first down on the ensuing Tiger possession that would ice the game away.
Tylor McCarthy, Senior, Tight End
With a focus on the running game, the 6 foot 7 tight end was often used as a blocker. But on the few times he was able to slip out, he made an interesting target. McCarthy’s one reception came in the third quarter. Quickly after catching it, he showed why he’s a dangerous weapon. He delievered the boom on an opposing defender and rumbled for a big first down. As Tuttle’s offenses expands this season, look for this unique target to be a touchdown maker in Class 4A.
Dylan Cummings, Senior, Offensive/Defensive Lineman
While not quite as quick as his fellow lineman Terry, Cummings was the other player upfront often having his name called in containing the Plainview running attack. He also played on the edge defensively, but he often crashed down fighting through blocks to blow up running plays. He showed strong and quick work with his hands, to shed blocks and pull down ball carriers.
Mason Davis, Junior, Quarterback
It’s Davis’ first year as a starter for the Tigers and he kept the trains running on time for Tuttle in a good showing. The junior looked best when Tuttle rolled him out with a moving pocket, where he able to diagnosis where the weak point was in the coverages. He avoided mistakes, while also occasionally supplementing his arm with smart scrambles. Davis was denied a touchdown on the night, but two of his intended passers to his receivers where in the endzone, but they were interfered drawing defensive pass interference flags.
Major Sharp, Sophomore, Defensive Back
While an older team, Tuttle still had a handful of underclassmen making plays for them. Especially on the defensive side of the things, as their secondary was a no fly zone for much the evening. Sharp capped that stellar performance with a fourth quarter interception.
