The emergence of Choctaw as a power in 6A-2 has come with talented prospects all over the field. Let’s take a look at the Yellowjackets that are currently making them one of the teams to beat in Oklahoma, while also having outstanding chances to play at the next level.
Desean Brown Desean Brown 6'3" | DL Choctaw | 2022 State OK , Senior, Edge
Physical. Fast. Quick. Tenacious. And many more superlatives could be used to describe the standouts game wrecking style of play. Brown dominated off the edge all night, running down RBs or harassing the QB. He recorded at least three sacks, while causing countless other QB pressures. Brown without a doubt looked the part of a future havoc creator off the edge at the Power 5 level.
RJ Jackson RJ Jackson 6'4" | DL Choctaw | 2023 State OK , Junior H-Back
A multi-dimensional weapon, Jackson was one of Wasel’s most often targeted players. And for good reason, as he was a load to bring down once he got the ball in his hands. To go along with being a weapon on screens, and shorter routes, he also lined up as a bruising goalline back. With Jackson’s combination of size, power and speed, it’s easy to see why he’s one of the top D1 recruits in Oklahoma’s junior class.
Steele Wasel Steele Wasel 6'4" | 210 lbs | QB Choctaw | 2023 State OK , Junior Quarterback
Wasel has a live arm and is fearless in the pocket. He often was able to move around to avoid the speedy pass rush, while keeping his eyes downfield to find late breaking receivers. This poise allowed him to convert big fourth down conversions all game, showing the faith the Choctaw staff has in their QB. While extending plays, Wasel did not make mistakes. Against a secondary as talented at the Hornets, an interception or two could be expected and understandable. But the top quarterback in Oklahoma’s junior class stayed clean all night with no interceptions, or really any bad decisions made.
La’Trell Ray La’Trell Ray 5'9" | 165 lbs | RB Choctaw | 2023 State OK , Junior, Running Back
Quick and tough, Ray racked up the yards all night. He found the lanes his physical offensive lane created and hit them hard. At the second level, he showed great agility in eluding tacklers and constantly turning 6-8 yard gains into 15 yard type runs. The smaller back didn’t show any homerun speed on the night, which the Hornets’ secondary is one of the fastest in the state. But as Ray makes the translation to the next level, he’ll need to keep grinding hard to find that burst to escape speedy DBs.
Spencer Boles, Senior, Linebacker
Boles is bound for Norman for his talents in baseball, but we’d be remiss to not highlight his play from Friday. He made key play after key play for the Yellowjackets on defense. He was a sure handed tackler all night, and had a standout second quarter play where he read the screen, avoided the blockers and blew up the play. He showed his noise for the football when he recovered a third quarter fumble.
Juju Smith, Freshman, Running Back
Choctaw has a deep group of talented skill position players, so it says a lot that Smith was able to break through and earn playing time. He also was often used a running in the red zone, showing the trust the youngster has earned from his coaches. He’s a sign the talent conveyor belt in Choctaw isn’t stopping any time soon, and is a name to watch.
