Stay dialed into Prep Redzone Oklahoma for more 2023 content to be dropping over the course of the next few days! [player_tooltip player_id="51037" first="Austin" last="Havens"] - Owasso (Ranked #19 Overall) Owasso began the 2020 season with a quarterback battle. After a few weeks of splitting reps, sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="51037" first="Austin" last="Havens"] emerged as the guy for the Rams. The young Ram quarterback led an explosive Owasso offense that had a ton of weapons at running back and wide receiver. There is no doubt that Havens is one of the best deep ball throwers in the sophomore class. It also helped that he had some absolute burners at wide receiver that would get behind a defense. Havens and the Rams would finish the season undefeated but would fall short to eventual champion Jenks in the semifinals. The Trojans really got after Havens and the young sophomore struggled on the big stage. However, that will provide Havens with plenty of fuel this offseason and many of those weapons that we mentioned will also be returning, setting up what could be a very special 2021 for Owasso. [player_tooltip player_id="54349" first="Blaze" last="Berlowitz"] - Cushing (Ranked #38 Overall) Very similar to Havens at Owasso is our next quarterback in [player_tooltip player_id="54349" first="Blaze" last="Berlowitz"] at Cushing. The sophomore quarterback was one of the best in the state this year and he certainly benefitted from having some serious weapons to distribute the ball to. In fact, he has two of his receivers that are also ranked in the 2023 Top 50 in [player_tooltip player_id="38715" first="Camden" last="Crooks"] and [player_tooltip player_id="98177" first="Lane" last="Yaunt"]. So just like with Owasso, this Cushing offense is going to be torching 4A football over the next several seasons. Berlowitz not only has the weapons around him but he has all the talent to be considered one of the better quarterbacks in this class. He has the size and arm talent to be a legitimate prospect for the next level. One thing that really stands out when evaluating Berlowitz is a combination of anticipation and improvisation. He knows where his guys are going to be and can keep the play alive long enough to get them the ball. [player_tooltip player_id="98174" first="Cal" last="Swanson"] - Ardmore (Ranked #29 Overall) It was a very different 2020 season for many reasons in Ardmore. The Tigers had several games cancelled due to Covid. In the first six weeks, the Tigers had only played three games. They also transitioned from a traditional option team to more of a spread offense because of the emergence of sophomore quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="98174" first="Cal" last="Swanson"]. The young quarterback is a good athlete but he’s more suited to an offense where he can air the ball out as he has an absolute rocket attached to his shoulder. In his first season as the starter, Swanson put up some decent numbers and made the offensive transition look very easy. Swanson is certainly a player to watch progress over the next few months. While things didn’t end the way they would like, losing to eventual champion Carl Albert in the playoffs, Swanson and a young Ardmore team will be back in 2021, hungry to contend for the title. [player_tooltip player_id="38818" first="Carson" last="Trimble"] - Grove (Ranked #48 Overall) One of the tougher quarterbacks in this class is Grove sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="38818" first="Carson" last="Trimble"]. The young QB was on our radar coming into the season after a solid freshman campaign. Trimble has several attributes that make him an interesting prospect to follow over the next few years. One main attribute is the fact that Trimble has unbelievable touch on the deep ball. He can also keep plays alive moving around in the backfield and he doesn’t lose much accuracy when he’s throwing on the run. Trimble is also an underrated runner when he tucks it and takes off. That’s where the toughness trait comes in as Trimble isn’t afraid to lower the shoulder and break a tackle or two. Trimble will also wait for the right window to deliver the ball to his receiver. He remains calm under pressure and won’t force a ball where it doesn’t need to go. [player_tooltip player_id="38780" first="Steele" last="Wasel"] - Choctaw (Ranked #5 Overall) No sophomore quarterback progressed as well as Choctaw’s [player_tooltip player_id="38780" first="Steele" last="Wasel"]. At the beginning of the season, Wasel came into it with very high expectations. It was somewhat of a slow start for not only Wasel but Choctaw overall as they began the year 1-2. However, every game Wasel got more and more comfortable in the Choctaw offense and they pushed champion Bixby to the brink in the regular season and again in the title game. Wasel also played a nearly-flawless game against Stillwater in the semifinals. During the first half of the season, Wasel was beating teams with his legs. However, towards the end of the season, he wasn’t so quick to tuck it and run and would keep plays alive by moving around in the backfield and waiting to make the right throw. Wasel has established himself very clearly as the top quarterback in this sophomore class.
