Expert Analysis
Brian Jerzak | Prep Redzone Scout
Steil was the most dynamic player on the field. In the first half, he did it mainly with his arm. He completed four or five strong throws to the sidelines – some of them when on the move. His best throw of the game was down the middle of the field. His best throw of the game was down the seam for a 30-yard touchdown. The receiver was well-covered, but it was a perfect throw. He also kept the Stars pinned deep in their own end with two punts downed inside the ten-yard line. In the second half, he used his legs for more than punting. After a short touchdown run, the senior showed speed around the corner on an RPO. He picked up huge yards on a quarterback draw. Then, off a play-action fake, he used his speed to the corner for a thirty-yard touchdown run. Then, he used his speed again to get around the corner and then broke a tackle. Stiel broke two tackles for a twenty-yard gain, and late in the game, he made two guys miss en route to a fourteen-yard touchdown run.

here, as he is stepping into the QB role for his Spartans squad out of necessity, and in his first action as a quarterback – against a loaded Detroit Lakes roster no less – Steil went 19-27 for 280 yards and 3 TDs to zero interceptions. The NDSU DB commit also rushed 15 times for 78 yards and posted two tackles as well. The Spartans narrowly lost 27-25 to the Lakers.

Year after year, Rocori puts out a variety of exciting athletes who are disciplined, tough, multi-sport, and two-way prospects who put together impressive team campaigns and individual highlights that PRzMN loves watching and following. 6’2, 190 lb. DB/ATH Will Steil is another prime example of this, and the ’22 District DB of the Year had a strong junior season that has paid off in SDSU, Winona State, SMSU, South Dakota, and MSU-Moorhead junior day invites after he posted 72 tackles, 4 TFLs, 2 forced fumbles, 2 INTs, 9 PBUs, and almost 200 yards of total offense. The brother of Rocori grad and current NDSU infielder Jack Steil, younger brother Will has great size for the CB position and shows off a ton of comfortability when tackling and shutting down ball carriers in space, and I also like his ball skills and ability to undercut shorter routes off three-step drops. Steil can start/stop well for his size, but I really like how he stuffs RBs and WRs in their tracks when tackling, as well as attack blocks and hold his ground out on the edge. Steil can effectively impact short balls, deep passes, and the run game, and at 6’2, 190 he provides a physical edge to the position that offenses have to game plan for. I’m very interested to see how his recruitment plays out and if baseball plays a big role like his brother. Go Spartans!
