One thing is for sure with Reed- he has major football IQ, which is ideal for the LB position. Reed can read and react to a play super fast, he trusts what he sees and flies up to his gap. His first 4 weeks of film is him flying at the snap of the ball to make huge stops, sometimes right before the end zone or line to gain where if he was a second later, they would have given up that TD or that first down. Reed has the old school downhill mentality of linebackers of old, but he can also drop back into coverage and cause some PBUs. Brighton’s LB has put on a great performance so far this season.

Early in Reed’s high school career, I made a big mistake in ranking him extremely high. That isn’t to diss him; it’s my fault, but ever since I looked more into him and ranked him where I thought he belonged, he’s done nothing but steadily climb the ranks once more. I honestly didn’t like his sophomore film, and I didn’t have high expectations for last season. Completely curbing my expectations, Blake went out there and earned All-State honors for his time at Linebacker. He played with great aggressiveness and motor, and truly dominated the KLAA. With some athletic and further IQ improvements, I’d expect Reed to receive MORE D2 offers.

Reed has been on my radar for a long, long while now. Until last season, he wasn’t able to get his varsity game off the ground, but the potential has always been there. Reed excels as a downhill run-stuffing between the tackles Mike linebacker. I still think there’s some room to grow athletically, and if he’s able to become faster, he’ll be much better sideline to sideline. Despite a few flaws, Reed also picked a few balls off and was named first-team all-state by the Detroit News. I’m still not sure where he’ll end up, but my gut says MIAA or GLIAC.

Reed is one of those guys that’s been steadily working since he was a freshman. It wasn’t until this past season that his work started to show on the field. In his first season getting significant Varsity reps, Reed earned All-Region honors as an off-ball middle linebacker. He’s as strong as any linebacker in the state, and his strength allows him to secure his tackles and hit hard. He shows a lot of promise with his overall IQ and feel for the game, as he has good pursuit, and reacts fairly quickly. Right now, I’d say Reed is trending toward D2. In order for him to reach his potential, Reed will have to focus on his athleticism and decisiveness on defense.

‘s 2023 film was extremely fun to watch, especially when you compare with his earlier film. I’ve seen Reed on several occasions, many times at offseason camps. Generally, I got the sense that he’s a super hard-working athlete who’s as strong as an ox that just needs to get a bit more athletic and get some time playing Varsity football. On film, he looked more athletic than I’ve ever seen him and his feel for the game flashed. He seems to have found his place on the defense as a middle off-ball linebacker. He plugs up the middle as you’d expect from a strong linebacker, but there are a few other plays where he makes a great effort to make a play on the sidelines. I think if Reed keeps focusing on his athleticism and speed, he could be a high D2 or even MAC prospect.

Reed is a really interesting prospect, as he definitely has the size and strength to be a problem for offenses. He moves really well side to side and sheds blocks pretty well. I think some more time being molded in the weight room and more experience boosting his football IQ is going to continue to make him a viable prospect. Don’t be shocked if he makes some noise and starts to move up the rankings quickly with a productive 2023 season.
