Sims did his best work while on the move. I don’t know if it was the game plan or what the offense liked to do all year, but they took advantage of Sims’ ability to move the pocket and throw on the move. He threw a 45-yard touchdown pass and then topped it with a perfect throw down the sidelines for a 69-yard touchdown. He used his legs to move in the pocket but was unafraid to tuck the ball away and run. During STA’s second-half comeback, Sims was efficient on third down, using his arm to keep the chains and the comeback moving. His most impressive throw was one that coaches typically don’t want quarterbacks to make. Rolling out, Sims threw across his body, but he had enough arm strength to get the completion.

is yet another prospect from St. Thomas Academy had an impressive showing in these eyes at the UND Flagship Camp last Saturday. He certainly has shown development with his touch-throwing ability since last watching him at our Prep Redzone Minnesota Showcase, as Maximus showed off a fluid and quick release within his 6’2 frame. Maximus was certainly one of the best quarterbacks I watched when he left the pocket last Saturday, as he shows a great base of agility and can improvise when his first look isn’t there to buy himself more time. The Mavericks certainly got a good one with their quarterback of the future with his young man as he pitches in my eyes a strong ceiling in the NSIC to get even better as a high-character prospect that wants to always get better. Sims gets the ball out as quickly as anyone when he likes his first read. He sets his feet and fires when he sees a matchup he likes. When he fires, there is plenty of zip on his throws. When the play breaks down – or if his own number is called – Sims’ breakaway speed would be impressive if he was a running back – much less a quarterback. His throwing motion – especially on the move – looks almost effortless. He is just as comfortable under center as in shotgun – something that is becoming increasingly rare in high school football.

A big stock-riser and dark horse in the Minnesota 2024 QB race, I was fortunate enough to check out STA’s Maximus Sims all the way down here in the Sunshine State at a NEXTGEN event, where the rising senior impressed me with his arm strength, touch, and timing during the 1-on-1 portion of the afternoon. I was impressed before I even figured out it was the same Maximus Sims from my home state, and was stoked to see him earn a scholarship offer in the recent MSU-Mankato flurry around a week ago. It was well deserved, as the gunslinger brings a talented, athletic, and still-developing game to his QB room that continues to improve and thrives in competitive settings. As a junior with the 5A heavyweight Cadets, Sims made plays with both his arms and his legs, displaying the ability to take off and hurt defenses with big runs as well as successfully complete accurate throws on the run. As a passer, I really like how he can put the ball on a rope and fit the ball into tight windows through good coverage. Just like in person, his touch on deeper passes looks good as well. More scholarship offers are coming!
