Expert Analysis
Will Helms | Prep Redzone Scout
After playing—and impressing—as a freshman, Lopez’s production scaled with his playing time. He averaged 25 attempts a game, maintaining relatively strong accuracy and showing his athleticism and rushing ability. He’s a guy who is going to have a ton of experience by the time he graduates, and the fact that he continues to progress puts him ahead of others in the class.

Lopez only got four starts as a freshman, but he wasted no time whatsoever getting acclimated to the pressure. He threw for over 300 yards in three of his four starts. He sees the whole field and gets the ball out quickly, spreading the ball out to his playmakers. With a full offseason of preparation, Cannon has to feel good about its chances with him under center.

Lopez earned a few starts as a freshman for Cannon and really played well, throwing for nearly 1,500 yards on the year. He throws an excellent deep ball and repeatedly shows a fearlessness against pressure on film. You could tell he got more comfortable as a processor as the year went on and with more experience, he’s a guy who could rise through the ranks and become a quality college prospect.

We are continuing the string of impressive production for freshman varsity quarterbacks as Lucas threw for 1451 yards and 19 touchdowns in only 8 games. The more impressive stat here is that he only threw 5 interceptions – that shows some excellent decision-making and ball placement as a thrower already. Lucas set a single-game school record with 6 touchdown passes in one game – and Cannon has had some very good quarterbacks in their history. Looking at the film, I think the most impressive I can say about Lucas is that he already knows how to climb the pocket, keep his eyes downfield, and make big throws for touchdowns or to keep the chains moving. His awareness is natural and next-level, and that is a special trait for a young quarterback, period.
