Stepping into a lead role on defense this year as a junior, Smitherman asserted himself big time in the Raptors win over Cane Ridge last Friday. He was a force that couldn’t be stopped as Smitherman was everywhere on the field and being the kind of secondary playmaker that collegiate coaches look for. The Raptors junior defender was around the ball all night, whether that be making tackles, breaking up passes or producing touchdowns both by way of an interception and a recovered fumble. This was “the” best performance yet from Smitherman and a game that can take his stock to another level, forcing college coaches to look at him harder. is a defensive back that can play all spots in the secondary at 5-foot-9, 165 pounds out of Ravenwood High School. Great athletic traits overall, he has excellent foot quickness, play speed, body control and change of direction skills. Good burst when closing to make tackles and he takes good angles to the point of attack. Smitherman is disciplined and intelligent on coverage to maintain leverage and positioning through the route stem. Natural in zone and off man, he moves smoothly with exceptional balance and technique. Overall, he is a competitor that plays with nice hustle.
