In the state of Tennessee there is plenty of talent to keep an eye on. After watching the film, here are 4 athletes in the junior class that deserve more recognition and have a good chance to rise in the rankings in the 2023 season.
Isaac Shelby Isaac Shelby 6’2″ | 195 lbs | ATH Hardin Valley | 2025 TN is a dynamic athlete at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds out of Hardin Vall High School with the ability to play wide receiver and safety at a high level. Great fit in a spread offense, he is explosive with the ball in his hands with good anticipatory skills and possesses great feet to change direction to make defenders miss. Good balance, Shelby is under control with his movements and shows solid play strength. Overall great athletic ability, he displays excellent lower body flexion which helps run routes to create separation and he is an instinctive player versus zone coverage. Good in traffic, Shelby is willing to work the middle of the field and make catches away from the frame.
Zyress Short Zyress Short 5’11” | 165 lbs | ATH Whitehaven | 2025 TN is an exceptionally versatile player at 5-foot-11, 165 pounds and he played RB, WR, DB, and QB. At his best with the ball in his hands, he displays great footwork to transition up field when working laterally. Good vision, Short likes zone runs and will find cutback lanes with a good understanding of how to work off blocks. Explosive and elusive in the open field, he is a defender’s nightmare in space. Good physicality, Short likes contact and maintains speed through arm tackles.
Jeremy Smith Jeremy Smith 5’7″ | 140 lbs | ATH Stewarts Creek | 2025 TN is a jitterbug with the ball in his hands at 5-foot-7, 140 pounds out of Stewarts Creek High School. He is undersized but plays with great toughness and aggressiveness as he seeks out contact. Smith is shifty with the ball in his hands with a low center of gravity and great change of direction skills. Versatile to play RB and in the slot, he displays great feet and fluid hips in both areas which makes it difficult to get a clean hit on him. Quality hands, Smith is instinctive and natural in the slot. At running back, he possesses the speed to capture the edge on outside zone runs.

Jay Smitherman Jay Smitherman 5’9″ | 165 lbs | ATH Ravenwood | 2025 TN is a defensive back that can play all spots in the secondary at 5-foot-9, 165 pounds out of Ravenwood High School. Great athletic traits overall, he has excellent foot quickness, play speed, body control and change of direction skills. Good burst when closing to make tackles and he takes good angles to the point of attack. Smitherman is disciplined and intelligent on coverage to maintain leverage and positioning through the route stem. Natural in zone and off man, he moves smoothly with exceptional balance and technique. Overall, he is a competitor that plays with nice hustle.
