Union Pines | 2027 StateNC comes into the showcase as one of the highest-rated defensive linemen in attendance, currently ranked #18 among defensive line prospects. The 6’3″, 230+ pound defender brings versatility to the field, with the ability to play both inside and outside along the defensive front.
Obst is a disruptive presence who can also stand up and track running backs out of the backfield, showing the range and athleticism that coaches look for in modern defensive linemen. Last season he put together an impressive stat line, finishing with 40 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, and 7 sacks, consistently creating problems for opposing offenses.
With his size, production, and positional flexibility, Obst will be one of the key defensive prospects to watch during the showcase and has a strong chance to stand out during the competitive drills and 1-on-1 matchups.
If there’s one thing we know about players from Union Pines, it’s that they’ll be well-coached and have massive weight room potential. That’s a significant factor when evaluating some of their undersized players, because it’s a safe bet that they won’t be undersized by their senior year. Obst turned potential into production in 2025, with a seven-sack season marked by a mixture of power and finesse moves, and a relentless motor.
Obst has had a strong year for a defense that has quietly been one of the top in the state. He can play both on the interior of the line and the edge, and he causes havoc wherever he lines up. He has plenty of strength to hold up in the running game, and he’s flashed as a pass-rusher, with four sacks on the season.
When previewing Union Pines, I saw that the coaching staff is high on Obst, a Pinecrest transfer, and we were impressed enough with his scant film to go ahead and preemptively rank him. He didn’t play a ton as a sophomore, but it looks like he’ll have an increased role after transferring. He’s a bit light for the interior, but he is strong enough to hold up in the running game and offers some pass-rushing upside.
