Expert Analysis
Zack Patraw | Prep Redzone Scout
Lorenz boasts a skill set that makes him a valuable asset as a center. Recognized for his exceptional strength, he controls the line of scrimmage, playing with a mauler mentality that shines as a run blocker. His ability to establish a solid anchor in pass protection showcases his strength and technical proficiency. Lorenz’s ability to leverage and his knack for getting inside defenders’ chests highlights his standout approach to engagements. Furthermore, his pass protection footwork is commendable, allowing him to mirror defenders precisely. A strong initial punch disrupts opposing players, hindering the defender’s pass-rush plan. Perhaps most notably, Lorenz’s persistence and relentless motor run very high as he plays until the whistle, displaying a mentality that enhances his impact on both running and passing plays.

There are tons of good things going on in powerhouse Mankato West sophomore OL Axel Lorenz, in addition to his sweet name. A mad dog of a blocker who plays, hits, and finishes like his hair is on fire, Lorenz is the most physical and aggressive lineman in MN’s 2025 class right now and enforces his will upon all ages and all sizes of opponents on the gridiron. The word I used in the 2025 class Biggest Stock Risers feature was “manhandle” when describing his blocking style, as the RG crumples and crushes defenders in any kind of situation, whether pass-pro, pulling, or even a simple down block. His strong, heavy hands noticeably affect defenders at first impact, and he’s also super quick and speedy for his size and able to cover ground and do a lot of different things around the LOS as a blocker. Athletic, agile, strong, and physical, he’s uber-effective as a puller and right now I think he’s got one of the highest ceilings, as well as floors, in the 2025 crop of lineman. I love watching this dude block and destroy dudes. Kid’s a stud!

Another fantastic young offensive line prospect with high potential and a bright future, 6’3, 250 lb. Axel Lorenz comes out of powerhouse Mankato West and their 2022 5A state championship runner-up squad. As a RG, Lorenz has a crushing initial punch that shows up in dominant fashion when he’s pulling or dropping in pass pro. With nimble feet, power in his upper and lower body, and a violent, in-your-face blocking style, he manhandled opponents in 2022 and shows off the technique, attitude, raw strength, and powerful base to control and go head-to-head with any and all rushers and DL in the state. You don’t see his kind of physical dominance and strength in underclassman blockers too often.
