The Lightning took down City, 36-19, to kick off last season in the Clash at Kinnick, playing at the University of Iowa’s home stadium. Liberty has won four of the five meetings in the series and four in a row, according to Bound.
I saw Liberty against Iowa City West last week and wrote up a scouting report on several Lightning players.
Here are players that stood out in the Liberty-City contest:
Beckman shook off an up-and-down Week 1 in losing at Iowa City West with a bounce-back performance against another rival Friday night. The senior was efficient, completing 26 of 32 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns. For the season, he’s completing 64.6 percent of his passes for 554 yards and five touchdowns against four interceptions. He’s added 85 yards and a score rushing. Liberty’s offense works best with him throwing the ball, but he keeps defenses honest with his running ability. He extends plays with his legs and excels in RPO. Beckman delivers smart throws with a strong arm.

Miller isn’t going to impress anybody walking off of the bus. He does that with the ball in his hands. The Lightning senior has hauled in 16 passes for 189 yards and five touchdowns in two contests. He dangerous as a punt returner or working out of the slot. He’s technically sound running routes and his quickness is just as important as his speed. His catch radius isn’t huge, but he catches anything thrown in his vicinity.
It wasn’t a great night for the Little Hawk defense, but Judge did what he could. He’s athletic coming off of the edge and combines it with strength. Judge might work on the outside in a 3-4 with his size and skill set. He could also stick at end. He’s active with a good motor.
Highlights
Caleb Burnett
Caleb Burnett
Burnett (6-3, 225) popped out to me early in this game and continued impressing throughout it. He’s an athletic big guy with a frame to comfortably add weight. He moves well laterally and plays with strong hands. He bends and recovers well.
Connor Cross Connor Cross 6'0" | 160 lbs | WR Iowa City | 2025 IA

Cross is an interesting prospect on both sides of the ball. He stands out a bit more at receiver than he does at defensive back so far with six catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. There’s potential on both sides of the ball with his athleticism and feel for the game. The son of former Iowa Hawkeye tight end Alan Cross has good bloodlines.
Lyncoln Andersen
Lyncoln Andersen
Andersen is a dog in the middle of the offensive line. He fires off of his snap and looks for as many battles as he can win on a given play. He succeeds getting good leverage and driving with his legs. He’s not close to hitting his ceiling with room to add mass and strength.
Koller is a dual-threat running back. He shows good vision and bursts through lanes while carrying the rock. The junior also stresses defenses as a receiver. That speaks to his quickness and ability to make defenders miss in the open field. Through two games, he has carried the ball 23 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns. He’s caught 16 passes for 143 yards. He caught 11 balls for 113 yards, and rushed for 61 and a score in this one.
