Turned out, renewing the rivalry was worth the wait. The Trojans pulled out a 35-28 victory in a back-and-forth contest highlighted by big plays in all three phases.
Both sidelines featured impressive talent. Here are scouting reports on guys that stood out.
One of the fastest rising recruits in the state, Woods already reports scholarship offers from Iowa, Missouri, Tulsa, Wyoming and South Dakota. The Hawkeye offer is at tight end, which certainly makes sense with his athletic gifts. He shines on defense at the prep level as well. He produced a first-quarter interception on this night with a nice return. Woods, the son of Iowa special teams coordinator LeVar Woods, plays like a coach’s kid. He marries a high football IQ with outstanding natural ability.
Wallace is in his third year as a varsity starter. Having watched him since his freshman year, you can tell he’s worked hard on improving . He’s steadily progressed. Wallace moves through his reads quicker these days and makes better decisions. He can deliver on all the throws, and while he’s not a “runner”, he moves well in keeping plays alive.

With Christian Janis off to college, it looks like Loveless might be Wallace’s deep-ball threat in ’23. Loveless continually beat his defender down the field. He scored on 51- and 44-yard passes in this contest. After an early drop, he hauled in whatever was thrown his way. He’s dangerous in the open with because of his quick acceleration.
Jesus Marungo-Murillo
Jesus Marungo-Murillo
Marungo-Murillo is an interesting performer on both sides of the ball. At 6-3, 210, he brings a solid frame to the field. He couples that with a burst off the line. He plays with great energy. He’s that vocal leader, making sure teammates keep their heads in the game.
Beckman broke out last season as the Lightning enjoyed the best season in their brief existence. He experienced an up-and-down night in the opener, throwing for 257 yards and two scores but also tossing four interceptions. One of them was a Pick-6. Beckman will bounce back. It should be noted that he rushed for a game-high 78 yards here, too. He stresses defenses with an ability to burn them with his arm or legs, sometimes on the same play.

Collin Decker
Decker brings an intriguing skill set to the table. He’s tall and long with speed and athleticism. Those traits help him get loose after the catch. Beckman favored the junior in this contest, connecting with him seven times for 100 yards.
Skinner is one of the better-kept secrets in the state. This kid has that dog him him with a fast motor, extreme power and athleticism. He competes with great leverage, getting under his opponent’s pads and driving him back. He plays off of a strong base and also uses his hands well.
