As the calendar turns to January, we shift our focus to the offseason and a big part of the offseason is 7v7 football. Prep Redzone will provide 7v7 coverage throughout the offseason and let you know about the players that are shining. We’ve already checked out C4’s 7v7 squad down in southern Oklahoma. You can check out the Player Spotlight Right Here. Today, we turn the spotlight on Sooner7. This will be the fourth season for Sooner 7 and they continue to get better and better. Over 200 kids were out at the tryout in Jenks on December 27th. That has forced Sooner 7 to carry several 18U teams as well as younger groups. When you looked at the tryout you saw not only really good players but some of the absolute best in Oklahoma. While the majority of the athletes are from the east side of the state, specifically the Tulsa metro area, the OKC area did have some representation as well. Here’s a look at some of the players that stood out to us. And it should also be mentioned that this list doesn’t feature arguably the best player in Bixby’s [player_tooltip player_id="38679" first="Braylin" last="Presley"]. The Bixby standout attended the tryout but did not work out, due to injury. But it’s safe to say that he’s on the team and will be a big part of the Sooner7 offense this year. We’re looking forward to covering Sooner7 on the tournament circuit, which will begin later this month. [player_tooltip player_id="38818" first="Carson" last="Trimble"] - 2023 QB - Grove The first of several young quarterbacks on this player spotlight is Grove’s [player_tooltip player_id="38818" first="Carson" last="Trimble"]. The young gunslinger will return to Sooner7 after being on their 15U team last spring and summer. Trimble would split reps with Choctaw’s [player_tooltip player_id="38780" first="Steele" last="Wasel"] last year. The two of them return this year, but because of all the numbers, they might be on different squads. That will allow Trimble to have more of a feel of the offense and really put some good reps out there. Trimble is 2023 quarterback to watch for sure. [player_tooltip player_id="38674" first="Chris" last="McClellan"] - 2022 DE - Edison Anybody who knows how 7v7 football goes might be scratching their head at this one. Arguably one of the state’s best defensive linemen was working out as a tight end at the tryout. Edison’s [player_tooltip player_id="38674" first="Chris" last="McClellan"] is used to terrorizing quarterbacks but this spring and summer he’ll be a safety blanket for his quarterbacks as a tight end. One of the more productive Sooner7 players last year was Stillwater’s [player_tooltip player_id="38525" first="Luke" last="McEndoo"]. With McEndoo graduating, McClellan has an opportunity to step into that same role. [player_tooltip player_id="91881" first="Dylan" last="Hasz"] - 2023 DB - Bixby Bixby was well represented at the Sooner7 tryout and the Hasz family had a big part in that. Twin brothers Dylan and Luke are two breakout sophomores from Bixby’s championship run in 2020. Dylan turned into an absolute ball hawk for the Spartans and when he would get his hands on an interception, more times than not, he was bringing it all the way back for six. Now he’ll be part of a Sooner7 defensive back group that is absolutely loaded. It’ll be fun to see how competitive the DB’s get with each other. [player_tooltip player_id="38687" first="Gage" last="Hamm"] - 2022 QB - Coweta Coweta’s [player_tooltip player_id="38687" first="Gage" last="Hamm"] enjoyed a great junior season, helping the Tigers to the district championship and putting up big numbers from the quarterback position. However, don’t look for Hamm as one of Sooner7’s quarterbacks this year. The Tiger standout spent the tryout working out as a safety with the defensive backs. While there is no doubt that Hamm is a good quarterback, we’re looking forward to seeing how his skills develop this offseason at a different position on defense. [player_tooltip player_id="57047" first="Jaden" last="King"] - 2022 DB - Booker T Washington After a breakout season in 2020, we’re looking forward to seeing how Booker T Washington’s [player_tooltip player_id="57047" first="Jaden" last="King"] does in a 7v7 setting. There’s no doubt he was one of the top defensive backs in Oklahoma this fall as he had nearly ten interceptions on the season. Booker T Washington just continues to produce some of the best DB’s in the state. King will get plenty of opportunities this spring and summer to raise his stock even more if he backs up a productive junior season with a strong 7v7 season. [player_tooltip player_id="61138" first="Jayden" last="Rowe"] - 2022 DB - Union We’re saying "we’re looking forward to..." a lot with several of these players but we can’t help it and there’s no other way to describe it. Union cornerback [player_tooltip player_id="61138" first="Jayden" last="Rowe"] has the chance to blow up this offseason in a similar fashion to what Choctaw’s [player_tooltip player_id="38492" first="Jordan" last="Mukes"] experienced last offseason. The more his junior tape gets around and the more his name comes up in the world of recruiting, this is only the start of what should be a very busy offseason. And we can’t wait to see how his game develops on the field. [player_tooltip player_id="38778" first="Kanijal" last="Thomas"] - 2023 DB - Del City This was a player that we were somewhat surprised to see at the tryout. Del City sophomore defensive back [player_tooltip player_id="38778" first="Kanijal" last="Thomas"] is already considered not only one of the top defensive back prospects but one of the top overall prospects in the 2023 class. Thomas was at the tryout and adds even more skills to the Sooner7 secondary. Whether he’s lining up at cornerback or somewhere else, he has the potential to be an absolute game changer on the defensive side of the ball for Sooner7 this year. [player_tooltip player_id="55156" first="Luke" last="Hasz"] - 2023 WR - Bixby Another breakout star during the 2020 season was Bixby sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="55156" first="Luke" last="Hasz"]. The dynamic athlete made his presence felt as Bixby’s home run threat at wide receiver. The young playmaker returned to the football field in 2020 and made an immediate impact for the Spartans in their state championship run. Hasz also has the ability to go to the defensive side of the ball and make an impact as a linebacker or a hybrid player. However, for Sooner7, it appears that he’ll primarily line up as a wide receiver. [player_tooltip player_id="38780" first="Steele" last="Wasel"] - 2023 QB - Choctaw Full disclosure here, during the state championship game, Choctaw quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="38780" first="Steele" last="Wasel"] floated a 50-yard bomb for a touchdown that made the pressbox in Edmond simply say "wow". I immediately pulled out my phone and messaged Sooner7’s coach and said I couldn’t wait to see how Wasel grows this offseason. Wasel has already established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the state. Wasel is another prospect who’s recruitment is about to take off in a big way. It’s not a matter of if, but when. [player_tooltip player_id="48987" first="Triton" last="Chandler"] - 2022 QB - Victory Christian One of the breakout players in the Tulsa area was Victory Christian quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="48987" first="Triton" last="Chandler"]. The Conqueror quarterback was a dual-threat machine and Victory put up big numbers offensively. We can’t wait to see Chandler in person throughout the tournament circuit to see how he develops. With Chandler being a dual-threat guy, we’ll only see his passing skills on display in a 7v7 setting. However, he’s going to have some absolute weapons to distribute the ball to and will really grow as a passer.
