The rain kept pouring in Oklahoma City Thursday afternoon and it made for quite the scene as 2A’s #4 Millwood hosted 3A’s #3 Heritage Hall. As the game kicked off, the rain would slow down and eventually stop. But the field had already taken on plenty of rain and had standing water all over. The combination of the field conditions and it being a week one game made for a very messy contest on both sides. Penalties and turnovers would plague both sides. But it wasn’t all messy. We saw plenty of fireworks and in the end, the Chargers would get out with a 35-28 victory. The Charger defense came up big when they needed to and despite missing star running back and linebacker River Faulkner River Faulkner 5'11" | 205 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2023 State OK and head coach Brett Bogert, the Chargers would improve to 1-0. Faulkner and Bogert sat out the game due to a suspension resulting from the 2021 semifinals.
Heritage Hall’s first four touchdowns came as a result on either turnovers or turnover on downs. The Chargers first got on the board after Millwood fumbled on their first possession. Barrett Travis Barrett Travis 6'1" | RB Heritage Hall | 2025 State OK would score the first of two touchdowns on the night. The Falcons would then get rolling on offense but penalties would wreck any momentum they had. On their third possession, the Falcons were deep in their own territory and a fumble that was recovered by Heritage Hall’s Zavier Freeman in the end zone would put them up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Millwood would get on the scoreboard early in the second quarter after 2025 wide receiver and defensive back Jaden Nickens Jaden Nickens 6'4" | WR Douglass | 2025 State OK had an interception and a long return to set up a Rickey Hunt Jr Rickey Hunt Jr 6'0" | 175 lbs | RB Millwood | 2023 State OK . touchdown from 39 yards out. Heritage Hall would respond a few possessions later after partially blocking a Millwood punt, setting them up with great field position. Despite several penalties, 2024 quarterback Andy Bass Andy Bass 6'0" | 195 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK would find 2024 wide receiver Rashaud Smith Rashaud Smith 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK for a 12 yard touchdown to put them up 21-6. Less than 20 seconds later, Millwood’s 2026 quarterback CJ Turnbull would fool the entire Heritage Hall defense on a fake hand off and went for 60 yards to make it a one possession game at the half.
Heritage Hall would score on their first possession of the second half but then Millwood would make things very interesting. Turnbull found Nickens for a 78 yard touchdown and then early in the fourth quarter, Hunt would score from 5 yards out and tied things up at 28. The Chargers would then put together a lengthy drive that took up half of the time in the final quarter and ended in the second touchdown run from Travis. Millwood would respond with a great drive that would stall in Heritage Hall territory. The Chargers would hold on from there to get out with the 35-28 victory. We saw some great performances on both sides and we take a look at the top performers from Heritage Hall below. Stay tuned for a scouting report on Millwood later on today.
HERITAGE HALL TOP PERFORMERS
There were several players in this match-up that we were fired up to watch for four quarters and Heritage Hall 2024 quarterback Andy Bass Andy Bass 6’0″ | 195 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK was near the top of the list. Bass appears to be a true dual-threat weapon at the quarterback position. They used Bass as a serious running threat in the offense and he put up some serious numbers. Bass would finish with 214 yards and a touchdown on 11-25 passing. He would also add nearly 100 yards on 20 carries. When Faulkner returns to the Heritage Hall lineup, the Chargers are going to have a serious 1-2 punch in the backfield. While they could beat several teams with the running game alone, it was good to see that Bass can beat defenses with his arm and we expect the Chargers to be somewhat balanced, with a preference for running the ball. Bass has some legit speed in the open field and showcased that against a very athletic and versatile Millwood defense.
Highlights
With Heritage Hall missing star running back and linebacker River Faulkner River Faulkner 5’11” | 205 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2023 State OK , who put up monster numbers last season, they needed another running back to step up in his absence. 2025 running back and linebacker Barrett Travis Barrett Travis 6’1″ | RB Heritage Hall | 2025 State OK would fill that role and had a solid night, finishing with 51 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns on the ground. He scored the first touchdown on the night and would add another touchdown to put Heritage Hall up for good with just under six minutes to play in the game. Travis is definitely going to give the Chargers more depth at the running back position as he has a similar style to Faulkner. He’s a strong and athletic runner who also made some plays on the defensive side of the ball and even in special teams. The Chargers weren’t going to be able to just rely on Bass in their running game, especially on a night like Thursday with the weather, and Travis stepped up in a big way.
Of the players that made a big impact in Thursday’s game, Heritage Hall 2023 wide receiver Orie Walker Orie Walker 6’3″ | 190 lbs | WR Heritage Hall | 2023 State OK might have had the most experience and it showed several times throughout the evening. The majority of Walker’s production were on big plays and he gave Bass a big target at the wide receiver position. He would finish with just four catches but would go for 118 yards. Walker helped set up Heritage Hall’s first touchdown with a 20 yard reception in the first quarter. He would also make a 75-yard reception that he nearly carried a Millwood defender into the end zone. It was clear from the first few possessions that Walker was going to be a big play target within the Heritage Hall offense. They attempted a few long passes for Walker but with the wet field conditions, they just couldn’t convert. We expect Walker to be Heritage Hall’s leading wide receiver this fall and to continue raising his stock as a 2023 WR prospect.
Out of the four standouts from Thursday’s win, 2024 wide receiver Rashaud Smith Rashaud Smith 6’0″ | 175 lbs | WR Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK was the one player we weren’t familiar with on the gridiron. We’ve seen Smith play plenty of basketball but he ended up being one of Heritage Hall’s top wide receivers, along with Walker. Smith would finish with five catches for 56 yards and a touchdown. He also had several other big plays that got wiped away because of a penalty. Smith is definitely a playmaker to watch within this Heritage Hall offense. We’re basing this breakdown on just one game and there’s so much that can happen over the next few months. But Smith looks like he’s primed to be a breakout player within the Charger offense. If Heritage hall continues to use him as much as they did on Thursday night, he will put up some serious numbers by the end of the season. He also gives them another player that can make plays and is reliable on the offensive side of the ball.
