South Charleston is 1-29 as a program over the past three years, but there's a buzz in the air in Black Eagles land. Former head coach Donnie Mays has returned to the program where he saw massive success in the past, leading them to a state title appearance in 2014. He'll have a large rebuild on his hands, but there's always talent in the area if he can keep the top athletes from transferring out. Expect the Black Eagles to take a giant step forward in 2025, even if the W/L column doesn't necessarily reflect the progress they have made.

The top skill athlete for South Charleston to utilize this season is 2026 RB/DB [player_tooltip player_id='1324991' first='Malcolm' last='Brown']. He's poised to have a huge senior year for the Black Eagles after being one of the few bright spots during a tough 0-10 2024 season. Brown is a plus athlete who doubles as a standout on the hardwood and will help the team in a multitude of ways. D2 programs should be targeting Brown this fall.

A potential future stock riser in our rankings after the season will be 2026 South Charleston ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1137703' first='Kayden' last='Hackman']. He stepped in at quarterback for most of last season but will be back to his more natural positions like TE and EDGE. Hackman has been a 4-year starter for the Black Eagles, and his patience and loyalty to the program during some turbulent years should pay off for him during his senior year. He's a raw talent with a ton of potential and upside and physical tools that can't be taught. He has the size and athleticism to develop into a future high-level prospect if he keeps putting in the work to get there."

South Charleston has some big bodies in their 2027 class to build around moving forward and get their program back on track, with 2027 OL [player_tooltip player_id='1154943' first='Elijah' last='Bausley'] being among the top offensive line prospects in the state. He's jockeying his own teammate, [player_tooltip player_id='1154946' first='Morgan' last='Watts'], for position in the rankings and will be pushing each other to get better over the next two years.
An underrated member of the South Charleston program for the past two years has been 2027 OL/DL [player_tooltip player_id='1166786' first='Jackson' last='Slack']. He did some good things as a sophomore on defense and appears to be starting long the offensive line as well this year. We like Slack as an EDGE prospect for now, given his size, but he could make strides physically and be a full-time hand in the turf player in the future. Slack plays with high effort and physicality, with quality athleticism that will allow him to continue developing into a college prospect.

2028 South Charleston QB [player_tooltip player_id='1624345' first='Ceno' last='Riley'] showed promise as a freshman for the Black Eagles when he was pressed into action, and should continue to show that this year as a sophomore. He appears to be their QB1 heading into the season and is another good young piece to build around for the future. His biggest area to continue developing is size to be able to withstand an entire season, as he's capable of using his legs on offense as well. That will also aid Riley's arm strength and ability to open up the passing game further, but the potential and upside are evident in his game at this early stage.
