The Del City Eagles have become one of the more consistent contenders in Class 5A and show no signs of slowing down. The Eagles would come into the 2024 season looking to make another trip to the state championship game after finishing as Class 5A Runner Ups in 2023. The Eagles tripped out of the gate, losing in a shutout to Edmond Memorial. But it should be noted that Edmond Memorial would make a run to the 6A-1 semifinals. Following the loss to the Bulldogs, Del City went on a run that their opponents couldn't slow down. They beat Booker T Washington and Midwest City with ease to enter district play with a 2-1 record. From there, Del City's dominance only continued. The Eagles would run away with the district championship, winning every district contest by at least 20 points. They also had a stretch of four straight shutout victories in the middle of that district slate. They ran away with the district title. The Eagles would open up the playoffs with back to back shutout victories. That would give Del City seven shutout wins on the season after beating Shawnee and Bishop McGuinness in the first two rounds. However, because of the district alignments with the district champions, Del City found themselves on the same side of the playoff bracket as reigning champion Carl Albert. In a rematch of the 2023 state title game, Del City ran into the Titans and Carl Albert would win 28-7 before they captured a third straight state championship and their eighth in the last nine years. Del City lost a special senior class following the 2023 season but they showed that they can reload. Now, they enter the 2025 season expecting to be right there at the top of Class 5A.

2025 OUTLOOK

As we start heading further into 2025 and the football season is right around the corner, nothing has really changed in terms of the expectations for Del City coming into this fall. The Eagles once again find themselves solidly as a top five team in the class and they're certainly on the short list of teams that we could see winning the state championship this fall. But as we have already mentioned and will continue to mention this month, Class 5A feels more wide open than ever as we head into this season. A lot of teams have question marks and Del City is one of them as well. Only three starters are back on the defensive side of the ball. Now, it should be mentioned that one of those returning starters is arguably one of the best linebackers in the state so if you're going to have a low number in returning starters, at least make sure the guys you have coming back are absolute dudes. But the Eagles are confident that they'll be able to fill those gaps elsewhere in the defense. And after we saw Del City back in the spring, we're starting to believe that thought process. The front seven was absolutely dominant in a team camp setting and could be primed for a big 2025 campaign. Offensively, Del City brings back six starters and we really like the potential of this unit. They have speed everywhere and a pretty strong offensive line that will be paving the way up front. Overall, will this year's team be able to replicate last year's successes on both sides of the ball? Only time will tell. But they will be challenged once again by an early non-district schedule and they'll go into the district as the favorite to capture another district title. But there are a few players on this roster that still remember coming up short in the 2023 state title game and they'll use that as a motivator all season and into the playoffs.

Del City's offense has the potential to be incredibly explosive when you look at the players they have returning in the skill departments. However, just like with any offense, they have to take care of business on the line of scrimmage if they are going to be successful elsewhere. Paving the way up front for the Eagles will be senior [player_tooltip player_id='1703437' first='Arrion' last='Daniels'] and several other returning starters on the offensive line. Daniels is a massive presence on the line of scrimmage for Del City and having a player that has some experience returning will certainly help. Daniels has been hard at work this offseason, going to different camps and training to improve his overall game.

Junior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1664120' first='Josiah' last='Chester'] is a player that is near the very top of our list when it comes to breakout stars to watch this season. Chester had a solid sophomore season but we got a chance to watch him in person twice in May and in both instances, he was absolutely dominant. First, he was one of the very best athletes at our showcase camp in Tulsa. Then, we saw him two weeks later with the pads on and he was winning rep after rep. He consistently gets behind defensive backs and simply has a knack for getting open. And even when he's not open, he has the ability to make the contested catches. Overall, we think 2025 could be a big year for Chester.

Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1035154' first='Kaleb' last='Blackwolf'] had a very successful first season with Del City after bursting onto the scene as a freshman at El Reno. Blackwolf is going to be a player that can impact all three phases of the game. On offense, he can line up at running back or at wide receiver and have an equal impact. Defensively, he's one of the returning stars to watch in the secondary. And on special teams, he was an absolute menace in the return game so he's just as dangerous there. Blackwolf is an All State-caliber player and he could see his production absolutely explode this fall. We can't wait to see how Del City gets creative with Blackwolf on the offensive side of the ball.

Senior running back and linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='587262' first='Ricklan' last='B Holmes II'] went from an intriguing prospect in 2023 to one of the best players in the state in 2024. Holmes was equally productive on offense as he was on defense. Now, defensively is where Holmes has the potential to have his greatest impact. He'll be very important to bringing those younger players along. We saw him take that “coach on the field” role last season as he had a better understanding of the defense. If he takes it another step forward this season, Del City's defense will be just fine. And then offensively, Holmes is going to be one of the hardest running backs to bring down in 1 on 1 situations as he's simply too strong.

Sophomore quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1703435' first='Syncere' last='Overton'] looks to be the guy at the quarterback position and for the second straight year, the Eagles will be going to a sophomore at QB1. Overton replaces another quarterback who moved out during the offseason and as we saw last season, there might be some growing pains early but if last year repeats itself, he could be one of the breakout players this season in Class 5A. And when you look around at what Del City has in the skill departments, Overton just has to give the ball to those weapons in space and they'll make it happen. From Blackwolf to Chester to Holmes in the backfield, Overton will have plenty of firepower around him.

2025 SCHEDULE

Aug. 29th - AT Edmond Memorial
- For the second straight year, Del City will open up their season against Edmond Memorial. Last year, the Eagles played the Bulldogs for the first time since 2009. The Eagles will be looking to get out to a fast start in 2025 but also looking to avenge last year's 35-0 loss.
Sept. 5th - Booker T Washington
- These two teams have met in each of the last seven years and this series has completely turned around, in favor of Del City. The Eagles have won the last three meetings, including back to back shutout wins in 2023 and 2024. Before that, Booker T Washington won three out of four.
Sept. 19th - Midwest City
- After taking a week off, Del City will wrap up non-district play against Midwest City. The Eagles have won the last four meetings with the Bombers and all of those wins have been by 20-plus points. The biggest blowout during that stretch came last year, when they won 62-6.
Sept. 26th - Collinsville
- Del City will open the district slate against a Collinsville team in a match-up that could end up deciding the district championship. Both teams are going to expect to compete for the district title. Del City dominated an injury-plagued Collinsville team last year, winning 61-10 on the road.
Oct. 3rd - AT Memorial
- The first of two straight trips to Tulsa takes place here in week five. Del City heads to the 918 to face off with Memorial. The Eagles have met the Chargers in district play in each of the last three years. The closest game was a 63-21 win in 2022. The Eagles expect to dominate again in 2025.
Oct. 10th - AT Nathan Hale
- The second half of the regular season will begin with another trip to Tulsa as Del City travels east to face Nathan Hale. The Rangers will have a new head coach and they are looking to turn things around but it might not happen here. The Eagles rolled to a 62-0 victory in 2024.
Oct. 16th - Tulsa Rogers
- After back to back road games, Del City will return home in week seven to host Tulsa Rogers out of Tulsa. This is another TPS program that Del City had no problems with in 2024. Their 2024 meeting was the first in recent memory. The Eagles dominated the Ropers, winning 56-0.
Oct. 24th - AT Tahlequah
- Tahlequah was another new opponent for Del City in 2024. The Eagles would welcome the Tigers into town and they scored their fourth consecutive shutout victory, winning 56-0. This year, the Eagles will have to go on the road to face off with Tahlequah in week eight.
Oct. 31st - Claremore
- After beating Claremore in the 2023 semifinals, these two teams became district opponents in 2024. The Eagles went to Claremore and won 34-14, almost an identical score to their semifinal showdown, where they won 34-13. Out of their 11 wins in 2024, this was the “closest” one.
Nov. 7th - AT Pryor
- In another district match-up that was a playoff match-up the year before, Del City will wrap up the 2025 regular season on the road against Pryor. The Eagles beat Pryor 48-8 in the 2023 first round. Last season, they finished off another perfect district record with a 49-12 victory.

NOTABLE

In April of last year, Oklahoma had an emergency redistricting shuffle that put Del City in an east side district instead of their original spot in one of the west side districts. While that forced the Eagles to come over to the Tulsa area three times during the regular season, it also had playoff consequences. Because of their district alignment in the bracket, they were on the same side of the bracket as eventual champion Carl Albert. So instead of seeing another Mid-Del showdown in the Class 5A state championship game, we saw them face off in the semifinals, where the Titans prevailed 28-7. But when you look at the dominance that the Eagles served up to the rest of Class 5A throughout the season, it certainly looked like they were the second best team (behind the Titans) in Class 5A. It's an interesting situation that happens from time to time with the way the brackets are laid out by district assignment. Because of that distinction, we end up seeing the top two teams in a class squaring off in the semifinals instead of the championship game. We think that 2024 was another example of just that.
