Week 8 Game Recap: Mountain Pointe vs Corona Del Sol

<p>We got a magnificent 6A Central Region matchup between two teams who both are looking to rebound after a loss in their previous games. The Mountain Pointe Pride travel across the I-10 into Tempe to battle the Corona Del Sol Aztecs under the Friday Night Lights. We will recap the Mountain Pointe vs Corona Del Sol Week 8 game in this article and highlight some of the standout performances from Friday's contest.</p>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Game Summary:</h2>   <p>Corona wasted no time airing out the ball downfield as QB [player_tooltip player_id='884431' first='Luke' last='Farrell'] connected on a 43 yard pass to WR Domonick Ruiz for the early lead 7-0. It would then be Mountain Pointe's rushing attack getting going as RB [player_tooltip player_id='716834' first='Jamarlon' last='Otis'] punches it in twice, one from 3 yards out and another from 8 yards out, for the Pride to go up 14-7. After a Pride turnover, QB [player_tooltip player_id='884431' first='Luke' last='Farrell'] would find WR [player_tooltip player_id='992814' first='Jude' last='Stevens'] to tie the game at 14-14. RB Jamalron Otis would respond with a 22 yard rushing touchdown to go back up 21-14. QB [player_tooltip player_id='884431' first='Luke' last='Farrell'] would strike once again with WR Domonick Ruiz who would take it to the house from 52 yards to tie the ball game back at 21-21 before halftime. In the second half, the points would continue to pour as Mountain Pointe's QB Michael Tollefson scrambled and found the endzone on a 6 yard rushing touchdown for the Pride to go up 28-21. The Aztecs would respond with a 44 yard field goal from K Tarik Dzambegovic and another 50 yard connection from QB [player_tooltip player_id='884431' first='Luke' last='Farrell'] to WR Domonick Ruiz for the receiving touchdown to retake the lead, going up 31-28. This time, Mountain Pointe's passing attack put points on the board, with QB [player_tooltip player_id='954374' first='Robert' last='Knorr'] finding ATH [player_tooltip player_id='368969' first='Chase' last='Shumate'] for the 35-31 lead. The Aztecs would turn it over on downs at the beginning of the 4th quarter before RB [player_tooltip player_id='716834' first='Jamarlon' last='Otis'] would flip the field on a 66 yard run into Aztec's territory, setting up another passing touchdown from QB [player_tooltip player_id='954374' first='Robert' last='Knorr'] to ATH [player_tooltip player_id='368969' first='Chase' last='Shumate'] from 14 yards out with score now being 42-31. Corona would close the gap late with WR Domonick Ruiz rushing it in from the wildcat formation from 3 yards out but failing on a two-point conversion to make it 42-37. Mountain Pointe would seal the win by recovering an onside kick. Final Score: Mountain Pointe 42- Corona Del Sol 37</p>   <p>It was an offensive shootout going back and forth, with some extraordinary plays being made on both sides of the ball. An outstanding game from both teams, but it came down to Mountain Pointe just having a little more gas in the tank to escape with this victory. We will now share some of the stand-out performances from Friday's game.</p>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Offensive Standouts:</h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">2025 Running Back [player_tooltip player_id='716834' first='Jamarlon' last='Otis'] proved last night why he is one of the best running backs in the state. He rushed for 3 rushing touchdowns in the contest and had over 100 yards rushing on the ground, followed by a couple of catches out of the backfield. A redzone nightmare for the defense as he can find the tiniest amount of space and not be denied when the endzone is in this sight. He can also hit a big home run play, bursting out in open field into another gear and eating up yards on the ground. A remarkable performance last night from the senior running back, being the focal point for the Mountain Pointe rushing attack.</p>      <p class="text-gray-700">2025 Athlete [player_tooltip player_id='368969' first='Chase' last='Shumate'] was a two-way impact player on both sides but made a few more crucial plays for his team on the offensive side of the ball. He had 2 receiving touchdowns in the red zone for his team, showing off his insane vertical as he just picked the ball out of the air for the score. He also has a couple of pass deflections, one on a critical 4th down in the 4th quarter. Having 10 catches for well over 200 receiving yards and 4 total touchdowns, one on the ground and three through the air. His explosiveness and speed down the field stretched the secondary thin all game. He was poised at the catch point, looking the ball in with sound hands even when contested. After that, he was looking for the big-time play, putting shifty moves on defenders and separating for the house call. Not only was his offensive night impressive, but he also played both ways for the Aztecs, having a few tackles and breaking up a pass at cornerback. Having 4 passing touchdowns on the night and over 250 passing yards, the young sophomore was methodical with his throws on each drive. His deep throw accuracy was very good, having plenty of velocity and touch to get it just where it needed to be for his receivers to make a play on it. He was able to maneuver and move well on the run from outside the pocket, dishing the ball out on the run and with good decision making. Farrell was great on offense and will undoubtedly be a quarterback to keep your eyes on in his young high school playing career.</p>    <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Defensive Standouts:</h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">2026 Linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='739442' first='Jaylyn' last='Colter'] was a force on the defensive side of the ball for the Pride. Hovering around double digit tackles on the night, he was a wrecking crew preventing his opponent's rushing attack from getting going. His ability to diagnose and work through traffic is unique, navigating the trenches and always being around the ball carrier. He is violent and powerful in his tackles, firing through the ball carrier and doing it with emphasis. Colter had himself a night on the defensive side of the ball and will continue making plays to add to his already fantastic junior season.</p>      <p class="text-gray-700">2025 Defensive Back [player_tooltip player_id='368942' first='Rylon' last='Dillard-Allen'] was everywhere for the Pride defense. Recording a few tackles, one of them as a tackle for a loss, and breaking up three passes in the air was an outstanding night for the senior. He moved around from the safety to the cornerback position, showing his versatility in the secondary. He plays through the receiver's hands excellently with elite timing and drive to punch the ball out for the incompletion. He is the true heartbeat for this Mountain Pointe defense, as Dillard-Allen is one of Arizona's best defensive players.</p>   <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://youtu.be/kzksyK6EQt8 </div></figure>     <p class="text-gray-700">2025 Linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1331213' first='Keane' last='Abril'] played a great game for his team on the defensive side of the ball. Recording a plethora of tackles on the night and a TFL, Abril was putting his talent on display at the linebacker position. His instincts are sound as he reads his keys and accelerates downhill, whether through a gap or scrapping over the top outside. His open-field tackling is terrific, working with the correct leverage and wrapping up to get the ball carrier down. Abril plays textbook defense, and his team will need his defensive talents in these late stages of the season.</p>      <p class="text-gray-700">2025 Defensive Lineman Briggs Erskine had a tremendous game on the defensive line for the Aztecs. He recorded his first sack on the season last night, rushing through the middle and meeting the quarterback in the pocket. He played mainly on the interior on the defensive line, eating up double teams and giving up minimal ground against a talented offensive line. Erskine is having an underrated season for his Aztecs team and will look to finish strong in the final games of his senior year.</p>     <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Other Notable Players:</h2>   <p>Michael Tollefson QB Mountain Pointe - ASU commit and recent transfer from California, Tollefson was integral to the Mountain Pointe rushing attack. He got good push at the point of attack and had quick movement skills when he pulled from his guard position to the second level. Washington shined last night with his talented Mountain Pointe offensive line.</p>   <p>[player_tooltip player_id='992814' first='Jude' last='Stevens'] WR Corona Del Sol - Another reliable option for this Corona passing attack outside of Ruiz was Stevens. Quick and twitchy, mainly lining up in the slot, he had multiple catches and the one touchdown grab in the second quarter. Stevens hopes to help elevate this offense even further as he has all season.</p>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Next Week's Matchups:</h2>   <p>Mountain Pointe bounces back off from their loss two weeks ago after regrouping in the bye week to move to 5-2 with this road win. They will host Salpointe Catholic (4-2) next week in a high-powered matchup within the 6A Central Region.</p>   <p>The Aztecs coming up short with the loss will now move them to 1-6 on the season. They will go on the road heading to Downtown Phoenix next week to take on the Brophy Broncos (6-1) in another regional matchup.</p>
