Week five has come and gone and there were plenty of standout performers in the second week of the WV high school football season. Here are 11 athletes that stood out during week five of the season.

[player_tooltip player_id='402800' first='Amar'e' last='Johnson'] - Wheeling Park '26 RB

I was able to catch Wheeling Park's game this past week against perennial Ohio power Steubenville and sophomore running back [player_tooltip player_id='402800' first='Amar'e' last='Johnson'] showed what he was capable of. Johnson was a little quiet the first three games but had his breakout performance against the best team on their schedule. The 2026 prospect carried the ball 15 times for 176 yards and three touchdowns with an 11.7 yards per carry average. He also added four catches for 38 yards and the Steubenville defense simply didn't have an answer for him in a 42-28 loss.

[player_tooltip player_id='865705' first='Aiden' last='Davis'] - Wheeling Park '25 QB

Another Wheeling Park Patriot who impressed me in their game versus Steubenville (OH) was junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='865705' first='Aiden' last='Davis']. Davis has quietly put together a great first year of starting on varsity as QB1 and just made our Midseason QB Stock Risers. The 2025 prospect is a dynamic athlete and threw for 320 yards and a touchdown on 21 of 35 passing. Davis was showing off his escapability and playmaking ability in the pocket all game long. He was sacked a couple of times but extended plays more often than not against a very stout front 7 for Steubenville. The future is very bright for this junior quarterback.

[player_tooltip player_id='450987' first='Tyshawn' last='Dues'] - Hurricane '25 WR

Hurricane junior receiver and fresh WVU commit [player_tooltip player_id='450987' first='Tyshawn' last='Dues'] had a short but productive night in a blowout win over St. Albans. Dues only needed three catches for 88 yards with two of them going for touchdowns. Dues also made an impact on special teams with a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown bringing his total to three in just the first half. Dues was showing off his speed and playmaking ability against a very overmatched St. Albans squad and was very good after the catch. He has the twitch and speed combo that P5 schools are looking for which is why WVU pulled the trigger on an offer and Dues happily accepted.

[player_tooltip player_id='866263' first='Curtis' last='Jones Jr'] - Cabell Midland '24 RB/LB

[player_tooltip player_id='866263' first='Curtis' last='Jones Jr'] was up to his usual shenanigans and had another phenomenal night in the running game against previous unbeaten Parkersburg. Jones Jr eclipsed the 200-yard rushing mark in the game and scored two touchdowns on 24 carries. The WVU commit had short touchdown runs of 1 and 2 yards as the Knights defeated the Big Reds 42-16. The 6'2 210 stud has been on a mission this season as Cabell Midland's workhorse running back and he's putting together a senior season to remember before he's on his way to Morgantown.

[player_tooltip player_id='907182' first='Marquel' last='Lowe'] - Princeton '25 RB

Coming off a fresh mention in our Midseason RB Stock Risers, Princeton's [player_tooltip player_id='907182' first='Marquel' last='Lowe'] also makes our Week 5 standouts. Lowe had another 130 yards rushing and four touchdowns in their 42-0 win over Tazewell (VA). Lowe is typically known for his speed but from watching his game highlights I came away impressed with how hard he ran the ball this week. He was breaking and running through tacklers but still showed off his speed and agility. Lowe has sudden cut ability and has some wiggle to him that can shake tacklers but has the power to run through arm tackles as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='370256' first='Turner' last='Garretson'] - Parkersburg South '24 QB/LB

Parkersburg South senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='370256' first='Turner' last='Garretson'] had the rare achievement of throwing five touchdown passes to five different receivers in one game. Garretson completed 17 of 22 passes for 230 yards and the five scores as the Patriots defeated the Monarchs 62-24. He was also effective as usual with his legs running for another 58 yards in the game. Garretson and the Patriots have a huge matchup with Bridgeport next week after their bye which holds major playoff seeding implications.

[player_tooltip player_id='909000' first='Maverick' last='Lemasters'] - John Marshall '25 RB/LB

John Marshall junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='909000' first='Maverick' last='Lemasters'] ran wild in the first half against Parkersburg South before the Patriots figured out how to slow him down in the second half. Lemasters ran for 232 yards with 205 of those coming in the first half alone. He was averaging 12.8 yards per carry in the first half and ripped off a 44-yard touchdown run on the third play from scrimmage. The 6'1 190 bruising running back has quietly had a very productive junior season through the first five games and may be under the radar right now on an 0-5 team.

[player_tooltip player_id='911405' first='Elijah' last='Waller'] - Woodrow Wilson '24 WR/DB

Woodrow Wilson senior receiver and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='911405' first='Elijah' last='Waller'] makes his debut on our weekly standouts for his play against Lincoln County. Waller racked up 147 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the game. He had catches of 54, 30, and a 53-yarder on a fake punt in route to a 49-21 victory. Waller is also an impressive defensive back prospect where he's currently projected in our system but the senior is an all-around athlete that could also play receiver at the next level.

[player_tooltip player_id='370309' first='Murphy' last='Clement'] - Martinsburg '24 QB/ATH

[player_tooltip player_id='370309' first='Murphy' last='Clement'] was doing [player_tooltip player_id='370309' first='Murphy' last='Clement'] things in Martinsburg's 57-14 blowout victory over fellow Eastern Panhandle foe Jefferson. The senior quarterback was productive as usual in both the passing and running game as he ran for 127 yards and passed for 131 yards. Clement ran for a score and threw for two more while also running and passing for a two-point conversion and even intercepting a pass on defense for good measure. He's simply one of the best overall athletes in West Virginia high school football and proving that with a tremendous senior season thus far.

[player_tooltip player_id='450994' first='Jalyn' last='Abercrombie'] - Spring Valley '25 RB/WR

Spring Valley junior athlete [player_tooltip player_id='450994' first='Jalyn' last='Abercrombie'] was doing it on the ground and through the air in the Timberwolves' 49-12 win over Riverside. Abercrombie carried the ball 6 times for 58 times and two touchdowns while averaging 9.7 yards per carry. He also caught three passes for 53 yards and another touchdown bringing his total to three on the night. Abercrombie has now put back-to-back impressive performances together in recent weeks and has totaled over 500 yards of total offense and 9 total touchdowns through the first five games of the season.

[player_tooltip player_id='907809' first='Malachi' last='Lewis'] - Oak Hill '24 ATH

Oak Hill needed all of [player_tooltip player_id='907809' first='Malachi' last='Lewis']' efforts to claim their 13-10 narrow victory over Ripley this past week. Lewis was doing it all and willed his team to a win with a big night on the ground and on defense. Lewis rushed for two touchdowns in the game but it was on defense where he made the biggest contribution this week. The senior quarterback and defensive back forced three turnovers on defense with an interception and two forced fumbles. Lewis has made our weekly standouts in previous weeks for his offensive play but the Red Devils needed him on defense this week to pull out a close win.

Week five has come and gone and there were plenty of standout performers in the second week of the WV high school football season. Here are 11 athletes that stood out during week five of the season.
