#3 UNIVERSITY AT #4 MORGANTOWN

The Game: The Mohawk Bowl. This game takes center stage tonight, with two bitter rivals separated by just six miles meeting in one of the biggest games this rivalry has seen in years. This year's matchup carries even more weight with both teams sitting inside the Top 5 and championship aspirations on the line. University hasn't beaten Morgantown since 2021, and the Hawks were shut out 21-0 at home last season as the Mohigans went on to capture a state championship. University believes it has a legitimate shot at winning it all this year, but a hostile road environment against a good Morgantown team will seriously test that belief. The Hawks have the opportunity to change recent history of this rivalry, but they'll have to earn it against the defending champs.

Keys to the Game: Discipline is just as important as talent in a rivalry game with this much at stake. Both teams need to keep their emotions in check and avoid letting things get chippy or undisciplined. Losing focus on assignments or allowing frustration to dictate decisions could quickly swing momentum in the wrong direction. Explosive plays will be difficult to prevent with the game-changing playmakers on both sidelines, but limiting those big gains has to be a priority. Neither team wants to get caught in a shootout or fall behind by multiple scores early, so winning the battle of discipline and containing the opponent's biggest playmakers likely decides the Mohawk Bowl.

Matchup to Watch: Morgantown's defensive backs and linebackers face a major challenge against a University offense loaded with playmakers led by #1 2027 QB [player_tooltip player_id='1271395' first='Harrison' last='Helbig'], who can distribute the ball to a dangerous group of weapons. On the other side, University has to account for #1 overall 2028 prospect [player_tooltip player_id='923337' first='Maddox' last='Twigg'], a dual-threat quarterback who is a load to bring down as a runner and has the arm to punish defenses that commit too heavily to stopping him and his running backs. The battle up front could determine how much either quarterback is able to dictate the game. University needs to protect Helbig long enough to let its passing attack work while also preventing Morgantown from establishing the run and controlling the game.

Score Prediction: Morgantown 31 University 28

CHAPMANVILLE AT MINGO CENTRAL

The Game: An area rivalry with major playoff implications tonight in Southern WV as Chapmanville visits Mingo Central. The Tigers dominated this matchup 46-0 last season, but they graduated a significant amount of talent from that team, giving the Miners a chance this time around. Recent results against common opponent Logan offer an interesting comparison, with Chapmanville rolling to a 44-7 victory while Mingo Central came up just short in a 16-12 loss. The Tigers have the recent history and current winning streak on their side, but the Miners are coming off a blowout of Lincoln County and will have the home crowd behind them. With both teams fighting for playoff positioning, I see this one as a toss-up that could go either way.

Keys to the Game: Mingo Central needs to carry over the momentum from its 54-8 win over Lincoln County and avoid letting Chapmanville dictate the pace. The Miners have to find a way to slow down a balanced Tigers offense that has averaged big production during its three-game winning streak. Protecting the football and finishing drives will be important, especially with Chapmanville coming off a convincing win over Logan. The Tigers, meanwhile, need to keep their offense rolling and take advantage of a Mingo defense that will have to account for both the passing game and the ground attack. With playoff positioning on the line for both sides, the team that controls the line of scrimmage and limits costly mistakes could come away with a massive win.

Matchup to Watch: The quarterback battle features two productive playmakers, with Mingo Central's [player_tooltip player_id='1687819' first='Jamere' last='Knuckles'] throwing for 1,769 yards and 22 touchdowns while adding another 185 yards on the ground. His top target, [player_tooltip player_id='1687818' first='Terrindez' last='Bryant'], has 700 receiving yards, while [player_tooltip player_id='2132039' first='Luvante' last='Kenney'] leads the Miners' rushing attack with 584 yards. Chapmanville counters with star QB [player_tooltip player_id='1315124' first='Dakota' last='Dalton'], who has accounted for 1,977 total yards and 26 touchdowns this season. Mingo will need senior LB [player_tooltip player_id='907920' first='Taegan' last='Hackney'], who leads the team with 116 tackles, and junior OLB/DE [player_tooltip player_id='1616951' first='Peyton' last='Parker'], who has 15 sacks, to make Dalton uncomfortable and disrupt the Tigers' offense. Both teams have the playmakers to put points on the board, making the battle between Mingo's defense and Dalton's ability to create offense a key factor in deciding this rivalry.

Score Prediction: Chapmanville 28 Mingo Central 21

#6 INDEPENDENCE AT #1 FRANKFORT

The Game: Frankfort gets another major test this week, hosting #6 Independence just days after knocking off previously unbeaten Class A Wahama 55-27. The Falcons enter at 8-0 with a 36-game winning streak, while the 5-2 Patriots have won three straight and are looking to make a statement against one of the state's top teams. This is the first meeting between the programs in six years, and the matchup has the feel of a potential playoff preview with both teams viewed as serious Class AA contenders. Independence has the explosive offense to challenge Frankfort, but the Falcons have been rolling all season and will have home-field advantage in what should be one of the biggest games of the week.

Keys to the Game: Frankfort has to be disciplined against an Independence offense built around quick screens, strong perimeter blocking, and the ability to strike downfield for explosive plays. The Patriots can make defenses pay when coverage breaks down, or defenders lose their assignments, so the Falcons need to tackle well in space and keep everything in front of them. On the other side, Independence must find a way to slow a Frankfort Wing-T offense that just put 55 points on the board against Wahama. With Frankfort coming off a physical game on a short week, Independence needs to wear down the Falcons for four quarters with their speed and depth.

Matchup to Watch: Independence QB [player_tooltip player_id='1221843' first='Brock' last='Green'] is the player Frankfort has to keep under control, as he approaches 1,800 passing yards and is capable of stretching the field with his arm. Sophomore RB/WR [player_tooltip player_id='1716452' first='Paxton' last='Myers'] and senior WR/LB [player_tooltip player_id='1306758' first='Carson' last='Treadway'] give the Patriots two good playmakers, but Frankfort has plenty of firepower of its own. Senior RB/DB [player_tooltip player_id='1154895' first='Braydn' last='Tyler'], Cole Shanholtz, and [player_tooltip player_id='2079161' first='Gunnar' last='Bradshaw'] provide a strong ground game, with junior QB Austin Twigg adding to their explosive and tough running backfield. The Falcons will also need their defensive front, led by seniors [player_tooltip player_id='1616382' first='Anthony' last='Smith'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1624408' first='Knox' last='Kimble'], to disrupt Green and keep Independence from finding its rhythm. Both teams have the playmakers to make this a high-level battle in what could be the game of the week.

Score Prediction: Independence 34 Frankfort 21

#3 EAST HARDY AT #7 CAMERON

The Game: A major Class A showdown takes place in Cameron tonight as the #7 Dragons welcome #3 East Hardy for a Top 10 matchup with plenty on the line. Cameron escaped with an 8-7 win in last year's meeting, but the Dragons will be shorthanded this time around with [player_tooltip player_id='1583907' first='Talen' last='Brown'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1154892' first='Marshall' last='Holland'] both unavailable. Injuries and a small roster have tested Cameron's depth in recent seasons, and tonight will be another opportunity for the next group of players to step up. East Hardy is chasing its first undefeated regular season since 2017, with Cameron and Petersburg standing between the Cougars and that accomplishment. The long road trip adds another challenge, but this should still be a competitive test between two of Class A's top teams.

Keys to the Game: Cameron's ability to overcome its injuries and defend its home field will go a long way toward determining whether the Dragons can pull off a major upset. The entire town will be in attendance for what figures to be an electric atmosphere, creating another challenge for an East Hardy team making the long road trip. The Cougars have the playmakers to quiet that crowd quickly, led by QB [player_tooltip player_id='864946' first='Trevor' last='Roof'] and RB [player_tooltip player_id='1624351' first='Nehemiah' last='Graham'], along with a senior-led offensive front. Cameron will look to control the football and keep East Hardy's offense on the sideline with long, sustained drives. The Cougars need to get stops, avoid letting the Dragons dictate the tempo, and make the most of their possessions. If Cameron can turn the home-field energy into a physical, ball-control performance, the Dragons could make this a very uncomfortable night for the visitors.

Matchup to Watch: Cameron will need its depth to step up in the backfield, especially with key contributors missing from the lineup. QB [player_tooltip player_id='2067954' first='Soier' last='Reed'] will continue to lead the offense, and the Dragons' offensive line has played well, but a younger group of backs must be ready for expanded roles and deliver against a tough East Hardy defense. The Cougars will look to match Cameron's physicality up front while leaning on their playmakers to generate explosive plays. Cameron can't afford to let those playmakers find space and turn this into a track meet. If the Dragons can get enough production from their backs while keeping East Hardy's offense in check, they'll have a chance to control the tempo and make this a fourth-quarter battle.

Score Prediction: East Hardy 27 Cameron 13
