Houston’s Running Back Scene Is Heating Up

<p>Houston has no shortage of talent in the backfield, and this group of running backs is bringing plenty of excitement to the field. From explosive runners who can hit the hole and turn on the jets to backs who create their own lanes and make plays in space, there are several names putting together strong performances early on. We take a look at some of the Houston area running backs who are making things happen and showing why they deserve more attention.</p>    <p class="text-gray-700">Sean has cemented his name in La Porte history, becoming the program's all time leading rusher. He has been a major piece of the offense with his ability to find running lanes, create yards after contact and turn opportunities into big plays. Reaching the top of the school's rushing record book is a huge accomplishment and a reflection of the production he has brought to the field.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Polk is off to a huge start, already piling up over 600 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. He showed just how dangerous he can be against St. John, rushing for over 200 yards and finding the end zone five times in one of his biggest games of the season. Polk has been making the most of his carries, hitting open lanes and turning big opportunities into points whenever he gets the chance.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Dalton has been showing off his speed early this season, already surpassing 600 rushing yards while finding the end zone seven times. Once he gets into open space, Dalton has the burst to separate from defenders and turn a routine run into a big gain. His ability to hit another gear has been a big part of his production out of the backfield.</p>      <p class="text-gray-700">Peyton has been on a roll through the first couple of weeks, making the most of his opportunities out of the backfield. He runs with good tempo, gets downhill quickly and has shown the ability to create when the initial lane isn't there. Peyton has been finding ways to keep the offense moving and has brought plenty of juice to the running game early on.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Montgomery brings a downhill style to the backfield and runs with plenty of toughness between the tackles. He does a good job pressing the line, finding his opening and getting north quickly instead of wasting time behind the line of scrimmage. Montgomery keeps his legs moving through contact and can pick up extra yards when defenders get their hands on him.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Tony is putting together the type of senior season that could turn into a breakout year for the Katy back. He continues to make things happen every time he gets an opportunity in the backfield, running with purpose and finding room to work. Tony has shown the ability to turn his carries into productive plays while bringing an aggressive style to the position. He has the quickness to make a cut, change direction and create space when a running lane starts to close. He gets downhill in a hurry, keeps his pad level low and doesn't shy away from contact. He allows his blocks to develop, waits for the lane to open and then hits the crease with purpose. He runs with purpose, hits the hole with good urgency and does a nice job creating yards when the play opens up.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Miles brings a good mix of quickness and toughness to the backfield. He has shown the ability to make a cut and get downhill quickly, while keeping his feet moving when defenders close in. Miles doesn't need a wide-open lane to make something happen, finding ways to squeeze through traffic and keep the play moving forward.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Ian has been running hard since the season started and brings a physical edge to every carry. He attacks the line with purpose, keeps his legs driving through contact and refuses to go down easily. Ian's willingness to run between the tackles and fight for extra yards has made him a tough back to handle.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Aiden brings that true scat back style to the backfield, using his quickness and elusiveness to create problems for defenders in space. He has the feet to make sharp cuts, bounce outside and turn a small opening into a big play. Aiden is at his best when he gets the ball in space and can use his natural ability to make defenders miss.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Damariye has been impressive with his jump cuts, showing the ability to plant his foot in the ground and change direction in an instant. He can make a sharp cut without losing much speed, giving defenders a tough time when they try to square him up. He has good burst through the hole and does a nice job getting north before defenders can close the gap. Cash also has the footwork to make a quick cut and keep a play alive when the first lane disappears. He made the most of every opportunity, breaking loose for explosive runs and finding the end zone three times. Once he finds a crease, he can hit another gear and leave defenders chasing from behind. He has the footwork to make defenders miss at the line and the burst to get through a crease once he finds it. Xzavier runs with good intent and keeps the play moving forward, giving his offense another back who can create yards in different situations.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Myles showed his ability to impact the game in multiple ways, finishing with 146 rushing yards and 49 receiving yards for 195 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. He was able to make plays both as a runner and catching the ball out of the backfield, giving the offense another weapon to work with. He can be used in both the rushing and passing game, giving the offense different ways to get the ball in his hands. Jason has the quickness to find space as a runner while also being a useful option when lined up in the passing game. His ability to contribute in both phases makes him a tough player for defenses to account for.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Royce is one of the more underrated backs in the group and deserves more attention for what he brings to the field. He runs with good patience, has the quickness to find a lane and doesn't waste opportunities when the ball is in his hands. He gets downhill quickly, attacks open lanes and isn't afraid to finish runs through contact. He runs with good burst and has the ability to make defenders miss when given space. Jakoby can hit the hole with speed, create yards when the play breaks down and has the tools to be a dangerous option every time he touches the ball. </p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Birks is a back on the come-up who has been putting together some good work early in the season. He runs with good vision, has enough burst to get through the hole and does a nice job making the most of his carries. Birks continues to show more with each opportunity and has the skill set to become a bigger part of the offense as the season moves along.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Dariyan is a true speedster in the backfield who can change the game with one touch. He has the burst to get to the edge in a hurry and the acceleration to pull away once he gets into open space. </p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Evan is a young back who has already shown he can get the job done when his number is called. He runs with good instincts, gets through the line with purpose and has the quickness to make something out of a play when the lane starts to close. There's plenty of natural ability in his game, and his willingness to attack the defense gives him a lot to work with moving forward.</p>    <p>Houston continues to produce running backs who can make an impact in a variety of ways. With big time production, explosive speed and plenty of playmakers coming out of the backfield, this group has given us plenty to talk about. The season is still early, but these backs are already putting together numbers and performances that deserve attention.</p>
