Two months separate us from the start of the new high school football season. The new year will mark a major milestone for some up-and-coming athletes, such as most of the top freshman talent from last fall. For some, 2026 will mark their first time -- or at least their first full season -- competing at the varsity level. For others, they're entering year two with a season of experience under their belt and momentum riding into their sophomore campaign.

That being said, let's take a look at a handful of offensive talent poised for a breakout sophomore season from the class of 2029.

[player_tooltip player_id='1686505' first='Anthony' last='Davis'] is a name many in the Bluegrass are familiar with, though not in relation to the Bowling Green quarterback -- yet. Like the NBA player who shares his name, Davis is long and athletic. He possesses the natural traits of a successful dual-threat quarterback at 6-foot-3 with room to grow. He has as strong a varsity tape as almost anyone on this list, throwing 20 touchdowns for the Purples in 2025.

If you don't know about [player_tooltip player_id='1686543' first='Cole' last='Presswood'] yet, you will soon enough. The No. 1 overall player in the 2029 class was a backup last season for McCracken County, but is poised for a breakout season in his first year as QB1. He's been active this summer in camps and has impressed with his arm strength, vision, accuracy, and decision-making for his age. Despite his limited time on the field last season, he impressed with seven touchdown passes. His four DI offers will likely increase as he puts more tape out there.

[player_tooltip player_id='868213' first='Alex' last='Decker'] is a smooth route-runner and a deep-threat who appeared in 11 games for Somerset in 2025. He's speedy and can turn a quick pass into a big gain if he finds open field, which he proved by averaging 15.4 yards per catch during his freshman season. He can play out wide and in the slot, providing a threat to the defense wherever he lines up.

[player_tooltip player_id='868210' first='Caden' last='Lawson'] is an explosive running back from Middlesboro who broke onto the scene with nearly 900 yards from scrimmage on offense as a freshman last fall. His tape shows him breaking out of double-teams, juking his defenders out of the play, and outrunning defenses as a game-changing talent for his squad. He's slippery, sharp, and set up for a successful sophomore campaign in 2026.

[player_tooltip player_id='1884262' first='Eli' last='Jarrell'] has one of the most powerful arms in his class. Most of his passes are on the run or bootleg throws, but he's accurate off-balance and doesn't panic when he senses pressure while rolling out. He's also a threat to run, as he was one yard shy of 500 rushing yards as a freshman at Betsy Layne. He was responsible for 34 combined touchdowns last season.

[player_tooltip player_id='2064821' first='Michael' last='Crigler'] is expected to be one of the top receivers at the 1A level this season. He caught eight touchdown passes and proved his sure-handedness with three interceptions (T-4, 1A) on the defensive side of the ball. Out wide, Crigler is elusive and can beat an opposing cornerback off the snap. He could become one of the breakout WR prospects in all of the Bluegrass if he stays on this trajectory.

[player_tooltip player_id='1365028' first='Cameron' last='Miller'] had a fantastic freshman season in 2025. He rushed for 13 touchdowns on 897 yards as the main tailback for Hazard last fall. He's explosive out of his stance and uses his speed to quickly exit the backfield for a positive gain, averaging 5.5 yards per carry along the way. Miller is strong and has good size for his position, making him easy to spot -- but hard to bring down. Look for him to eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing mark this fall.
