Get 30% off your first billing cycle with code: howe30 in the coupon code area

Colleges have done well in mining Iowa's 2027 recruiting class. Twelve different guys have verbally committed to Power 4 programs. Quite a few others have pledged to FBS and FCS schools.

Even with those sizable numbers, a lot of talent from the state for the cycle remains in the board. Here's a closer look at a group of them:

[player_tooltip player_id='1361134' first='Ethan' last='La Cava'], QB, Dowling Catholic

Announced offers: None.

The Situation: Waiting your turn to play quarterback at Dowling is like a right of passage. When you become the starter, you're given the keys to a combination of a sports car and pick-up truck. The offense can race past defenders or run over them. That history along with LaCava's skill set could lead to a super senior season for him in 2026, when he's expected to step in as QB1. A quick start to the campaign would attract colleges and amp up his recruitment.

As it stands, programs on the next level are aware of his talents even before he becomes the varsity starter. This month, he's camped at Iowa State, Drake and St. Thomas. He also took part in the Lindenwood mega camp, and attended an Iowa State junior day.

[player_tooltip player_id='1571476' first='Logan' last='Barton'], K/P, Cedar Rapids Washington

Announced offers: None.

The Situation: I saw Barton compete in person when Cedar Rapids Washington played host to North Scott last season at Kingston Stadium. He was killing it handling the Warrior kicking and punting duties. It's a big leg that could work doing both of those jobs in college or specializing in one of them. He's definitely a candidate to kick off. After his performance at the Kohl's Kicking Underclassman Challenge during January, the scouting service ranked him as the No. 1 kicker in Iowa for 2027 and the No 26 player at the position nationally.

Colleges are interested in Barton. He attended the Temple specialists camp this month, and was invited to camp with Oklahoma State and Kanas State. Recruiting can be slower for specialists, but Barton is a guy that should see his interest pick up this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='1690175' first='Zachary' last='Anderson'], ATH, Hinton

Announced offers: Wayne State.

The Situation: Anderson is like a ball a clay that can be molded into an impactful player for a college willing to invest the time. He's played quarterback and linebacker but could fit at tight end or fullback, too. It's a lot of athleticism with physicality and toughness. He runs well and has a projectable frame capable of adding strength. His wrestling background means his footwork is smooth and an understanding of gaining leverage is present. A path to success at tight end or linebacker can be witnessed while watching his junior highlight video. I would probably lean to the defensive side of the ball, at least initially.

Wayne State recognized the talent and potential, offering a scholarship in the middle of this month. He also scheduled camps at Northern Iowa, Iowa State, North Dakota and Nebraska.

[player_tooltip player_id='1906933' first='Jerret' last='Baade'], DB, Johnston

Announced offers: None.

The Situation: A college willing to take a chance on Baade would be rewarded. It's worth investing in a productive 6-foot-1 defensive back with versatility to play multiple positions in the secondary. His long arms and strides make him effective in coverage, as evidenced by his play last season that included a pair of interceptions. He holds up well against the run, getting downhill quickly and breaking down the ball carrier before dropping him. Baade's frame is projectable, capable of adding good weight and strength in a college conditioning program. His traits make him a guy that would contribute early on special teams.

I'm surprised there isn't more college interest, but there are schools on to him. Minnesota State Moorhead and Upper Iowa brought him to campus for junior days. He was invited to Northwestern College and Central College.

[player_tooltip player_id='1699480' first='Trenton' last='Baker'], ATH, Bishop Heelan

Announced offers: None.

The Situation: I was impressed with Baker watching his sophomore film of 2024, when he was the junior varsity quarterback. He did more of that as a junior and also helped Heelan reach the state championship game as a linebacker. Baker is a good athlete that could take over as QB1 this fall after the graduation of last year's starter. That's a position where he might develop on the next level. I also think he would be an impactful defender at linebacker or safety. Baker sticks well in coverage and comes down hard against the run. He's a guy that would be a special teams' asset early in his college career.

Despite his limited time on varsity so far, Baker is hearing from programs on the next level. Eastern Illinois, Northwest College, Grand View, Baker, North Central College, Simpson and Crown College invited him to campus this year.
