We have taken a look at the offensive side of the trenches and dissected the day of our MVPs. Next up we flip to the defensive side of the trenches. The big boys that came out ready to battle with the OL. This group was very exciting. It had current names to know in the Classes of 2027 and 2028. It also had multiple 2029s that are sure to be names that several levels of college football will be pursuing over the next 3 years. Leading the way of this group was DL MVP [player_tooltip player_id='1637696' first='Luke' last='Schubert']. A 2028 out of Grafton who proved that his offseason was a dedicated one. Dive into his effort in the MVP article HERE. For the rest of the DL continue reading. Coaches, there is a lot to dive into with this group. Don't miss out!

It was a great day from the 2027 DE/Edge defender out of Oak Creek. I love the way Lincoln plays the game. He had a solid showing during the combine showing the quickness and acceleration needed to thrive off the edge at the next level. However, it was really impressive to watch him flip the switch when we got to live 1 on 1 battles. When the action got real Lincoln turned into a football player. He was a tough matchup all day. His strong lower body gives him a very effective first step to get him angles against OTs around the edge. He does a great job with hand use and overall hand fighting moves to maintain separation and defeat blocks. The hands are both strong and quick and he has the body control to be able to dip and bend. Lincoln has a special ability to flip that switch when he takes the field. He's a must watch 2027.

Tyson is a Prep Redzone Showcase Alumni and made his way back for another day of impressive play on Sunday. He started with a pair of 5.19 laser timed 40 and broad jumped 8'2.5". The 2027 has a stout and powerful 5'10" 224 lbs frame. Tyson has learned to win at that size too and he let us see it on Sunday. Tyson has built a great base of strength that allows him to power through OL. Especially if he can get off the line quickly and get the angle so he only has to beat half a man. The '27 also does a great job using his leverage and strength to be able to catch OL off guard and bull rush them which would get opponents off balance. To go along with that power is the explosive first step. Tyson is able to fly off the line with his hair on fire and can generate so much power in a short area. Tyson's size might limit him to situational roles, but wherever he ends up he is going to be a great competitior and make an impact and his teammates better in practice.

An undersized DL who put together a good showing is Badger's [player_tooltip player_id='1358654' first='Jaxson' last='Colborn']. The Badger product ran a 5.11 and 5.13 laser-timed 40 and also jumped 8'4" in the broad jump. During the combine it was clear that the sophomore DL is developing a very powerful and effective burst of acceleration out of his stance. A lot stood out during 1 on 1s from Jaxson who was able to win all along the DL from 3T out to DE, and he did it in a variety of ways. He could get hands inside and create separation with that initial contact and then flash speed to use that space to get to the heels of the OL. We saw him be able to dip and bend to get underneath hands of OL and stay under control on his way into the backfield. Jaxson also was able to set up OL one way and quickly cross their face the opposite way. The sophomore DL is building reliable tools to win in the trenches. Keep an eye on him.

The Sun Prairie East underclassman came out on Sunday and proved that while he may be undersized he can hang with what turned out to be a talented OL group. Drew is a 5'9" 210 lbs sophomore DL and came out ready to compete and also ready to be coached up. The kid flashed lateral agility that got him off blocks and/or angles to beat OL through gaps. That balance and quick twitch, when paired together, earned him several 1 on 1 wins. He did well using his hands to create space that he can then use that short area burst to win reps. If Drew can continue to grow and build in the weight room then by his senior season I can see him finding ways to be a consistent impact for the Cardinals.

Turning to the future now. We start with a very promising freshman DL. Kimberly's [player_tooltip player_id='2135765' first='Titus' last='Finley'] has the tools and gifts to work his way into being one of the top tier talents in his Class by the time his senior year rolls around. He already has a very well developed frame that is long and lean. That includes a 6'3" 210 lbs frame and the big man can already move really well too demonstrated by a 5.02 laser timed 40 and 8'3" broad jump. In 1 on 1s we saw the youth show up. Titus is a raw athlete, but even so we saw him put things together. When he used his length off a quick first step the freshman was able to drive back the older OL. It was also great to see him taking coaching and working to implement the hand fighting that was being worked on. The ceiling is very high for the naturally gifted freshman DL out of Kimberly.

Another impressive freshman is Grafton's [player_tooltip player_id='2124929' first='Khaleb' last='Drake Gray']. This is another outstandingly built freshman DL with Khaleb checking in around 6'3" 220 lbs on a frame that is already muscled up from clear weight room dedication. Khaleb was one of the athletes who I could see getting more and more comfortable as the day went on. The highlight of his combine was a strong 8'7" broad jump. When we got to 1 on 1s we really got to see him compete and play loose as the reps piled up. The '29 did really well getting off the line quick and timing when to strike his hands. Multiple reps were won by Khaleb thanks to his accurate punches that landed center mass and got the OL off balance. The freshman also showed that the strong frame was able to get OL off balance and run them back into the QB on multiple occasions. As the '29 DL continues to grow his strength, experience, and confidence we are going to see him absolutely take off. Sunday was a great launching point for Khaleb.

La'Savion is a freshman LB/edge who is working on his craft while waiting for his frame to develop and make that leap in growth. While only 5'6" 155 lbs, Flowers also measured in with 10" hands so when that growth spurt does hit we could see a big leap in his game. Even at a severe disadvantage size-wise, Flowers was able to get a could wins in 1 on 1s. That was because of the quickness he had both off the line and with his lateral quickness that allowed him to get to spots before the OL could react. It was great to see the freshman willing and wanting to compete. I will be following to see how he continues to grow and develop.
