While diving into ranking athletes in the 2027 class I took notice of the diverse and skilled group of 2027 defensive backs, and I wanted to break down some of their tape and look at what makes them each individually special. Defensive back is such an interesting position because there are so many ways for them to contribute. Some defensive backs are more fluid and move well in space, some play better near the line of scrimmage in the trenches, others contribute more on special teams or prefer to play press coverage. While production and skill looks very similar at, say, receiver or runningback, that's not the case for defensive back. Here are 5 guys who really impressed me while watching them.

Mamadee is a freak athlete. Freak. He can line up anywhere on defense and still make an impact on the play. He excels in the middle and on the edges. He's a sound, aggressive tackler who's an imposing defensive force. He's the best tackler and the best at the line of scrimmage of anyone on this list. His tackling and athleticism are both easily college football level, I'd love to see him improve upon his ball skills to become an even more complete player. If he's able to line up out wide at corner, become more comfortable backpedaling and in phase, he can be the ultimate swiss army knife on defense. When he does have the ball in his hands he's like a big runningback-he's really tough to bring down.

Barner just flies around the ball. The trait that sticks out with him is instincts. He's always in the right spot, always gives himself a chance to make a play on the ball. He's got great ability to sniff out the ball carrier in traffic and he's a sound tackler as well. He's comfortable both at the line of scrimmage and on the boundary. He can really move in space-more straight line speed than twitched up. He brings a certain kind of energy to field that's great for the defense.

Vogel has a special ability to play near the line of scrimmage. He's best used as a sort of box safety that can also drop back into coverage. His big frame helps him get off blocks in the trenches and finish tackles. He's aggressive at the point of attack. He's got good instincts while playing in space as a DB. Shows some wiggle with the ball in his hands. But it's really his size and ability at the line of scrimmage that makes him stand out, it's rare to find an athlete at this age with size and natural instincts to navigate the line of scrimmage.

This is a great opportunity to talk about what I mentioned in the introduction-Poole plays a totally different game from Vogel and Barner. He's at his best when playing centerfield and he's able to get after the ball in space. He excels at breaking on the ball and getting in front of receivers. He's got a nose for finding the ball. In addition he's still a solid tackler in space, not as dynamic and aggressive as a player like Vogel, but he's got a rare combination of ball skills and comfortability at the line of scrimmage. Most DBs that mostly play the ball aren't as comfortable playing close to the line of scrimmage and playing the run game, but Poole holds his own weight in that regard. He's a DB without a weakness that is best when allowed to just attack the ball.

Sanchez is probably the most traditional boundary corner on the list so far. He excels in turning his head in phase and playing through the ball consistently. He's a guy that's not gonna get penalized because of his ability to get his head around-he's hyper aware of where the ball is. He's super solid in the run game and he's got some thump to him. He's for sure got the ability to knock ballcarriers off their feet. His size and frame is solid, and with the force he hits with he's fit for the next level. That force he hits with has the ability to jar the ball loose after the catch.
