We've almost done it. After more than three weeks and 250 unique player mentions, we're approaching the end of our RDU Deep Dives series. But there are still several more prospects to cover in the Triangle. Here, we're kicking off the defensive back deep dives with an in-depth look at the best in Wake County. Specifically, I'm breaking down the best safeties in the county.

Editor's Note: The ranked corners are listed in order from first to seventh. Rankings reflect a combination of 2025 production and predicted 2026 impact. Other names in no particular order. Last year, I separated the DBs into corners and safeties. I won't do that for every county, but given the depth in Wake County, we'll split them here.

Bryant's role shifted in 2025, and so too did his statistical strengths. Formerly a box safety who'd rack up bigger tackle numbers, Bryant moved to a center field role to maximize the impact of his elite athleticism. Bryant had six interceptions as a junior. Perhaps the most impressive thing is that I don't think any two came while playing the same coverage. He's athletic, versatile, and at the top of our list.

We're approaching "best in the state without significant recruiting interest" territory for Bailey, who is a complete safety in a linebacker's body. He played a lot of outside backer this season, but with that still comes the natural coverage ability and frequent slot alignments against spread formations. Just turn on the tape to see an impressive hybrid defender.

Williams has been on the radar so long that sometimes we have to remind ourselves that he was just a junior last season. It was a weird season in that his raw numbers dipped, largely because Millbrook's front seven took a ton of the big plays from Williams and the secondary. He has the perfect combination of size and speed to make college coaches happy, and he could be in for a big senior season.

Brown is a former receiver, and those ball skills are evident in the way he plays the safety position. Leesville Road can play a lot of man and match coverages, meaning he's often in off-coverage in the slot, something we don't see a lot from other prospects. He plays that role well, able to pick up and stay with receivers at the top of their routes.

Stanley's ball production was at the top of most of the leaderboards last year. He picked off five passes and forced at least a dozen incompletions. A versatile defender, he's at his best when he can play a middle-of-the-field role and make plays on the ball in zone coverage.

Davis is a great film study because he challenges conventional wisdom at the safety position. Typically, when you see a smaller defensive back playing a free safety or single-high role, it's because he offers less in the running game than the passing game. But turn on the tape, and you'll find an old-school thumper of a safety with impressive hitting and gap-filling abilities.

If Lai were a bit taller and 20 pounds heavier, college coaches would be breaking down doors to talk to him. Even at his size, he's one of the best hybrid safety/linebackers in the state, with the ability to come down and play the run or read route concepts and make plays in the passing game.
