We're in the middle of our Deep Dives series, highlighting some of the top players by county in some of the state's biggest metro areas. But we cover the entire state, not just the big cities. Earlier this week, I looked at 10 rural pass rushers to know. Here, I'm looking at 10 rural wide receivers with college potential.

Editor's Note: "Rural" can have several meanings. For our purposes here, I primarily mean that these playmakers are based outside of the state's main metro areas and play for teams at the 4A level or below.

[player_tooltip player_id='590094' first='Amari' last='Coulter'] | Newton-Conover

Coulter's film speaks for itself and tells a better story than the raw stats on a balanced offense do. A big-play receiver who should step into the No. 2 role after a year as the third receiver. He has elite speed and wiggle, and he's grown physically more than we originally anticipated.

[player_tooltip player_id='1631111' first='Amari' last='Sumner'] | West Craven

Just a freshman, Sumner is making waves as part of a deep 2029 class at West Craven. He wasn't a consistent contributor on a veteran offense last season, but he's already been a major target on the 7-on-7 circuit, and it looks like 2026 could be a breakout season.

[player_tooltip player_id='2003826' first='Cainin' last='Glover'] | Eastern Randolph

Another rising sophomore, Glover was a key contributor on an Eastern Randolph team that nearly ended Shelby's eventual state-championship run. He was second on the team in receiving, despite missing the end of the season. As the top returning receiver on a team that returns its quarterback, I don't think 1,000 yards is off the table in 2026.

[player_tooltip player_id='1678619' first='Dominik' last='Danzy'] | West Stanly

Danzy played a little bit of quarterback for West Stanly this season and still finished at West Stanly's leading rusher and leading receiver. A do-it-all athlete, the rising senior is one of the most dangerous playmakers in the entire state.

[player_tooltip player_id='1159168' first='Jordan' last='Matthewson'] | Martin County

Matthewson does a little bit of everything for 3A Martin County. While most of his touches come as a rusher (78 carries for over 600 yards), the 6'4" playmaker is a clear receiver at the next level. He was an end zone magnet in 2025, with 14 touchdowns on 88 touches.

[player_tooltip player_id='2140883' first='Keitrell' last='Sutton'] | Washington County

As a freshman, Sutton was all over the field for 1A Washington County. He attempted 20 passes (for over 270 yards, three touchdowns, and no picks), caught 10 passes for another 177 yards, and added two touchdowns on the ground. I'm interested to see where he fits as a sophomore, though I love his big-play ability as a receiver.

[player_tooltip player_id='2074322' first='Keyahjae' last='Smyre'] | Maiden

For a team that was run-heavy, Maiden did a great job of giving the ball to its playmakers on the outside. Smyre had 600 yards and is the leading returning receiver after the Blue Devils graduate two key offensive playmakers. I think he could have a huge season as a senior.

[player_tooltip player_id='1421082' first='RJ' last='Lynch'] | Lincolnton

Lynch is an elite athlete who was absolutely unstoppable a season ago. Lynch put up over 1,600 yards from scrimmage, leading the team in receiving and adding nearly 500 yards on the ground. He was also a consistent punt return threat, averaging nearly 20 yards per return.

[player_tooltip player_id='1953538' first='Tristan' last='Thompson-Wynn'] | Brevard

Was there another player in the state with 81 receptions, five interceptions, and 26 touchdowns, including four on special teams? He was one of the most electric players in the state last season, and returns as Brevard tries to get over the line after a state-championship loss last season.
