The 2027 Class Rankings received its winter update, which brought over 100 new names to our radar and a huge overhaul to the rankings.. To continue coverage of the latest update, I will be highlighting some of the new names in the rankings. Some of these players made the jump from the watchlist to our rankings list, and others are completely new names that emerged throughout the season.

Despite going down with a season-ending injury after week 4, it's hard to deny the impact and upside that junior [player_tooltip player_id='2110831' first='Carter' last='Brabec'] displayed on the field. Carter was a two-way starter on the offensive and defensive lines, ending the year with 13 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception, along with paving the way for one of the top rushing attacks in the state. Standing at 6'7" and 300 pounds, Carter has the size and strength that project well to either side of the ball at the next level. Offensively, Carter plays with great footwork and is very agile for his size, showing he can pull, climb to the second level, and mirror defenders in pass protection. He is very efficient and accurate with his hand placement, making sure to get inside the defender's frame to win the leverage battle. Defensively, Carter is a monster on the interior line who can plug up gaps and has the power to collapse the pocket from the inside. Very disruptive run defender who can eat space and allow his LBs and fellow linemen to come in and clean up. Measurables, technique, and coming from the Wahoo factory... get after this guy ASAP!

Shelby-Rising City's [player_tooltip player_id='2110871' first='Jett' last='Vrbka'] joins the rankings as one of the highest-rated 8-man players in this upcoming class. Jett had a very productive junior season, recording 91 tackles, 6.5 TFLs, three interceptions, and a fumble recovery. Jett is a very versatile player who I can see as a key defensive chess piece, with experience at cornerback, safety, and linebacker. Vrbka has the speed and athleticism to stick with receivers on the perimeter and the ball skills to challenge them at the catch point. His high football IQ helps him read and diagnose plays in a flash, while his top-tier closing speed makes him a threat to take the ball back the opposite way. You can also slip him into an LB/S hybrid role where he steps into the box to help stuff opposing running backs and rush the passer. Vrbka was also a big contributor on offense, where he posted 641 rushing yards, 271 receiving yards (team leader), six rushing touchdowns, and seven receiving touchdowns. High ceiling player who is already drawing attention from big-time programs!

After showing flashes in his first season with Gretna East, junior [player_tooltip player_id='1552268' first='Carver' last='Fritchen'] looks primed to take on a bigger role this upcoming fall. Last season, Carver maximized his 13 receptions as he finished with 197 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 15 yards per reception. Carver is a bigger-bodied receiver who does an excellent job using his 6'2", 195-pound frame to fight off pressing DBs at the line of scrimmage and to "out-physical" them at the catch point. He has strong hands that allow him to secure the ball while also displaying great concentration to complete the catch through contact. Very good at making difficult receptions outside of his frame. Fritchen also showed the awareness to find and sit in the soft spots of the defense, giving his QB an easy target when the play breaks down. Carver's selflessness also stood out on tape, as you can find him running downfield looking for blocks to pick up when his teammate makes a reception or bounces a run to the outside. Lots of upside here... could be a spring riser!

The Wildcats' defense has been a safe place to go looking for solid DL, LB, and DB prospects, and that's no different with the emergence of junior [player_tooltip player_id='2110889' first='Blake' last='Kozney'] this season. As a junior, Kozney recorded 30 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, two sacks, and an interception. Blake stands out with solid measurables at 6'2" and 210 pounds with some room to continue filling out his frame at the next level. On top of his size, Blake's motor stood out on tape, as he is very quick with his electric first step when shooting his gaps and tireless in his pursuit. Kozney also possesses a well-rounded skill set that allows him to defend the run, rush the passer, and be fluid in coverage. Physical and violent mean streak when going to make the tackle, which you expect to see out of your LBs. Blake is listed as an outside linebacker, but I could see him playing anywhere along the second level and even has the speed/instincts to be a box safety. Definitely someone to check out this spring cycle!

We've had a bit of a theme with versatile players, so I'll continue with a two-way prospect in Lincoln Northeast's [player_tooltip player_id='1677661' first='Julian' last='McDonald']. Playing receiver and DB, Julian recorded seven receptions, 220 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns, 29 tackles, two fumble recoveries, and an interception. On offense, Julian is a dynamic receiver who averaged 30 yards per reception and can do it as a deep threat or through big YAC gains. Julian has underrated game speed and burst off the line, which helps him get vertical quickly and take the top off the defense. McDonald is also very twitchy and can take advantage of that on quick screens, where he can make defenders miss in space, and he has the acceleration to outrun good tackling angles. Willing blocker in the run game. Defensively, Julian showed he's willing to get physical at the line of scrimmage, jam receivers, and recover quickly enough to stick to their hip pocket. Good hands and ball skills to challenge receivers at the catch point.
