This season, we have started a new idea at Prep Redzone called “Power Scores”. “Power Scores” are computer-generated team rankings (not scout-based) that take into account various factors which can be found here. With that being said, I wanted to take a look at where our “Power Scores” currently stand in the state Kentucky in each class and focus on an impact player on each team in the Top 10. After already covering 3A-6A, here are some impact players for the Top 10 teams in 2A in our Week 10 “Power Scores”.

1. Owensboro Catholic:

The Aces are off to another impressive season after making it all the way to the state championship game last year. They have been led by junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1157497' first='Dre'mail' last='Carothers'] who has completed 129/203 passes for 1,829 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions in the first eight games. Carothers has showed an impressive feel for pressure this season, showing the ability to step up in the pocket to avoid pass rushers while keeping his eyes downfield to find the open receiver. He has also showcased an impressive deep ball, using his arm strength to stretch the field and touch to put the ball where only his intended receiver can catch it. Dre'mail has also ran the ball 17 times for 64 yards this season. Carothers currently holds offers from Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, and Kentucky Wesleyan, and I expect that list to continue to grow over the next two years.

2. Mayfield:

Mayfield has continued to be one of the top teams in 2A this season, led by the play of senior [player_tooltip player_id='401921' first='Malik' last='Kirby']. On offense, Kirby leads his team in receiving with 21 catches for 380 yards and six touchdowns in eight games. He has explosive speed which he uses to blow by opposing defensive backs in the deep passing game and touch pick up big gains after the catch. Kirby has also carried the ball nine times for 100 yards and three touchdowns, and has returned two punts for touchdowns this season. On defense, Kirby lines up at safety where he is a true ballhawk in the secondary. He has hauled in a team-high four interceptions this season while also recording 16 tackles and four tackles for loss. Malik currently holds offers from Georgetown (KY) and Pikeville, and I expect more to come his way throughout his senior year.

3. Beechwood:

The defending 2A state champions are off to a strong start to the 2025 season, due in large part to the impressive play of junior [player_tooltip player_id='1200706' first='Tyler' last='Fryman']. Through eight games, Fryman leads Beechwood in receiving with 34 catches for 788 yards and 14 touchdowns. Fryman is dangerous in the open field after the catch, using his speed and elusiveness to turn short passes into big gains. He has also shown the ability to use his speed and smooth breaks in his routes to create separation from opposing defensive backs. Fryman has also carried the ball 14 times for 240 yards and three touchdowns, and has returned three punts for touchdowns. He has also made an impact on defense this season, accounting for 24 tackles, two tackles for loss, and an interception. Tyler is committed to play baseball at Louisville at the next level but has also received football offers from Louisville, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Miami (OH), and Toledo.

4. Prestonsburg:

Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1973733' first='Kain' last='Patton'] has led Prestonsburg to an impressive 8-0 start to the 2025 season. He leads the team in rushing with 88 carries for 1,235 yards and 18 touchdowns in seven games. Patton is a very strong downhill runner who has shown the ability to keep his legs churning through contact to break tackles without losing his balance. He has also shown the ability to make plays in the passing game, catching a team-high 24 passes for 520 yards and five touchdowns so far this season. Patton has also recorded 37 tackles, four tackles for loss, and an interception on defense this season. Kain currently holds an offer from Pikeville and I expect more to come his way this season.

5. Belfry:

The Pirates have continued to be one of the stronger teams in 2A this season. One of the players leading the way for them has been junior [player_tooltip player_id='1200701' first='JB' last='Woolum']. On offense, Woolum is an electric playmaker out of the backfield, using his speed and elusiveness in the open field to break away for a big gain at any given moment. Through eight games, he leads his team in rushing with 42 carries for 520 yards and eight touchdowns. He has also shown the ability to pose as a threat in the passing game out of the slot, leading Belfry in receiving with 11 catches for 322 yards and three touchdowns. Woolum has also returned one kickoff for a touchdown and has made an impact on defense at corner this season, accounting for 32 tackles and three interceptions. JB should be a player for college coaches to keep an eye on over the next couple years.

6. Somerset:

Somerset is another program who has continued to find success this season, led by senior [player_tooltip player_id='401717' first='Kris' last='Hughes']. Hughes has made the transition from running back to quarterback this season but has continued to do most of his damaged on the ground, leading the team in rushing with 111 carries for 1,180 yards and 23 touchdowns in eight games. Kris has the strength to break tackles with ease in the open field but has also shown the speed to run away from the defense on long runs. He has also thrown for 671 yards and five touchdowns, and has played a key role on defense, recording 31 tackles and an interception so far this season. Hughes currently holds an offer from Thomas More and I wouldn't be surprised to see more come his way soon.

7. Martin County:

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1517158' first='Devan' last='Maynard'] has led Martin County to an impressive 7-1 start to their season. He is the team's starting quarterback and has completed 69/131 passes for 1,115 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Maynard has the arm strength to stretch the field and accuracy to hit receivers out of their breaks so that they can make catches in stride. He has also continued to showcase his dual-threat ability, leading his team in rushing with 81 carries for 933 yards and 17 touchdowns. Maynard has also returned one kickoff for a touchdown and has made a big impact on defense at safety this season, recording 35 tackles, four tackles for loss, and a team-leading three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown). Devan currently holds multiple offers and I expect that list to continue to grow throughout his senior season.

8. Danville:

The Admirals are off to an impressive start to the 2025 season, due in large part to the strong debut of freshman running back [player_tooltip player_id='1311186' first='Jayvian' last='Meaux']. Meaux has been one of the most productive backs in the state this season, carrying the ball 173 times for 1,425 yards and 25 touchdowns in nine games. He is a shifty ball carrier, showing the ability to make quick cuts in the open field to make defenders miss with ease. Jayvian has also shown the speed to break away from the defense on long runs. He has also caught three passes for 34 yards and a touchdown this season. Meaux will definitely be an exciting player to watch over the next four years as he continues to develop.

9. Green County:

The Dragons have been one of the surprising teams of the 2025 season, led by their junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1973732' first='Deacon' last='James']. James has been very impressive as a ball carrier in the read option game, using his speed and elusiveness in the open field to run away from the defense for big gains. He leads his team in rushing with 87 carries for 729 yards and 12 touchdowns in eight games. As a passer, Deacon has completed 53/98 passes for 810 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions this season. He has also played a role on defense this season, accounting for 24 tackles, one tackle for loss, and an interception. James should be a player to continue to keep an eye on over the next two seasons.

10. Lexington Christian Academy:

To wrap up our top 10 teams in our 3A Week 10 “Power Score” rankings in the state of Kentucky, I have the Lexington Christian Academy Eagles. The Eagles have gotten off to a strong start to the 2025 season, led by sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='951327' first='Nash' last='Whelan']. Whelan made the move to quarterback this season where he has shown impressive accuracy and arm strength as a passer. Through eight games, he has completed 90/140 passes for 1,296 yards, 14 touchdowns, and three interceptions. He has also shown the ability to tuck the ball and make plays with his legs, leading his team in rushing with 93 carries for 697 yards and 11 touchdowns. Nash has also made an impact on defense this season, recording 31 tackles, four tackles for loss, and an interception. Whelan will definitely be a player worth keeping an eye on over the next few years.
