It's difficult making a mark as a freshman in any sport. That's certainly the case in football, where physicality is a large part of the game. Yet, every year, a group of guys manage to buck the odds.

Here's a group of guys doing just that across Iowa in 2025:

Duffy left a legacy at the junior high level last season when he didn't allow a pressure in six games, roughly 40-50 pass attempts. He delivered on the other side of the ball as well, accumulating around six sacks and eight tackles for loss. Duffy has picked up where he left off as a freshman in 2025. Of his 7.0 tackles, six are of the solo variety. He has 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. With plenty of time left for developing physically and technically, Duffy is one to watch moving forward. He's an inside guy, but that could be at guard or D-Tackle. No need to figure that out now.

Playing in a program with a roster annually flush with talent, Lloyd has managed to make his mark through the first four games of the season. The ninth-grader had caught 10 passes for 155 yards with a team-high three receiving touchdowns. He'd also posted 9.5 tackles, eight of which were of the solo variety, and forced a fumble. Lloyd is a strong overall athlete as evidenced by him starting on the Wildcat baseball team as an eighth-grader this summer.

Out of the skill position guys in Iowa's 2029 Class, Wilson shot out to fast start in his first high school campaign. While their were growing pains, Wilson ranked first among all in-state ninth-graders playing 11-on-11 with four total touchdowns, including three passing. On top of that, he paced the Panthers with 18.0 tackles, 13 of which were solo stops. Wilson is a good overall athlete. He started for the Monticello baseball team this past summer, contributing as a batter, fielder and pitcher. Wilson is one to watch moving forward.

It's tough to lock Shield into a position this early in his prep career. His athleticism and versatility leave the door open to intriguing possibilities. Shield established his presence through the Comet's first four games of his freshman campaign, six solo tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. He also contributed on offense, carrying the ball and catching it. He chipped in a 15-yard kick return on his only attempt. Shield is working hard on his development during the prep season and along the 7-on-7 circuit. With present production and the will to improve, Shield should be on the radar of colleges.

Pineda wasted little time announcing his arrival on the high school scene. He led all freshmen in the state with 404 all-purpose yards through the team's first four games. That total included 17 receptions for 211 yards and a touchdown, and 193 yards on kick returns. Pineda is a strong overall athlete that stood out in the hurdles and the discus at the junior high level, illustrating his combination of strength and speed. With three and a half years of high school remaining, Pineda is worthy of college attention.

William already was in the Prep Hoops Iowa data base for his exploits in the hardwood. He's been added to the Prep Redzone courtesy of a fast start to his freshman year on the gridiron. William had hauled in nine passes for 64 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the Tornadoes first four games. He added 176 yards in eight kick returns. It feels like William is just scratching the surface of what he can become on the field. It reminds me a bit of where [player_tooltip player_id='1197479' first='David' last='William'] was a few years ago. He's now one of the most dangerous receivers in the state as a junior.
