Shield already had impressed us at Prep Redzone before watching him compete in person for West Liberty against visiting Mid-Prairie Friday night. It’s why we had him ranked highly in our last Class of 2029 update. Seeing prospects in action always adds another layer to the evaluation process, so I was happy for that opportunity. The sophomore’s performance matched what we can see on film. It’s a projectable frame capable of adding good weight and strength without the loss of the speed and athleticism that lead him delivering impactful plays already. Shield runs well sideline to sideline on defense and does well flowing with the action. He can cover receivers and support the run. There’s also potential of those skills developing at receiver. Special teams’ contributions seem like a good bet for the next level.

Shield served notice to West Liberty opponents last season that he was going to be a pain in their neck for years to come. The freshman totaled 23.0 tackles with 4.0 stops for loss, 4.0 sacks and a fumble recovery. He added 87 rushing yards and 21 receiving yards. Shield was just scratching the surface of what he could become. Expect an impactful leap forward in 2026 with varsity experience under his belt and an offseason of development. His a projectable frame should continue adding strength and power to go with plenty of athleticism and speed. Shield can contribute in three phases as a sophomore with a chance to break games open in any of those areas.

It’s tough to lock Shield into a position this early in his prep career. His athleticism and versatility leave the door open to intriguing possibilities. Shield established his presence through the Comet’s first four games of his freshman campaign, six solo tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. He also contributed on offense, carrying the ball and catching it. He chipped in a 15-yard kick return on his only attempt. Shield is working hard on his development during the prep season and along the 7-on-7 circuit. With present production and the will to improve, Shield should be on the radar of colleges.
