1st Quarter

With the sun setting in the background, we stepped foot onto a beautiful turf field in Rye, NY. The Garnets took the field to the roar of the crowd with a fan section that I was warned about for their loudness and school spirit. Section One football opened for both opponents with Somers entering with a 45 game win streak against Section One schools, and Rye being the team who last beat them In 2019. Somers received the opening kickoff, with the Rye defense forcing a quick punt in just three minutes. After the punt, the Rye offense went to work. Shoemaker and Miller connected on multiple passes, driving the ball down the field and taking up most of the first quarter. After a missed strike on third down, Shoemaker came on for the field goal and gave Rye a 3-0 lead with a few minutes left in the quarter.

Somers received the kickoff following the Field Goal, but once again the offense struggled, with a punt just two minutes later. Rye received the ball, and on first down Miller rolled out and was forced to the sideline where he through it into triple coverage turning the ball over. After the turnover, the Somers offense showed life. After a crucial 4th down conversion, Somers fumbled but kept the ball forcing 2nd and 30 mid way through the quarter. The drive stalled out, and forced a punt which was downed at the Rye 1 yard line. Miller trotted out and proceed to lead the ball all the way down the field where on 4th down the Garnets offense failed to convert, giving Somers the ball with 8 seconds left in the half. Somers kneeled it out with the score reading 3-0 at the halfway mark.

3rd Quarter

Rye started with the ball in the second half, following a defensive showcase to start the game. The Somers defense forced their first three-out of the game and received the punt in their own territory. Somers had little luck in their first drive of the half, as they quickly punted the ball back to Rye. The Garnets offense drove down the field with [player_tooltip player_id='1529592' first='Henry' last='Shoemaker'] connecting with [player_tooltip player_id='1229592' first='Carson' last='Miller'] for a 6 Yd touchdown catch to make the score 10-0 midway through the 3rd quarter. Somers received a squib kick which backfired as the return team took it for a solid gain setting up the offense with great field position. Following two run plays by [player_tooltip player_id='1206376' first='Dean' last='Palazzolo'], Iglesias threw it deep, where he found Mason Kelly open to get on the board, making the score 10-7. Rye received the ball back and got to work late in the third as they gained 21 yards before the quarter ended with a 10-7 score.

4th Quarter

With a close game, and the Somers offense feeling alive, [player_tooltip player_id='1229592' first='Carson' last='Miller'] came alive for Rye. A few plays into the quarter, Miller delivered a beautiful back shoulder throw to Sebastian Lewis, to add to the lead to make it 17-7, with ten minutes remaining in the game. Somers received the ball and had solid plays going for them, but a wide open drop and a wide open missed throw, led to a quick punt giving the Garnets the ball back. Rye held the ball for over 7 minutes driving down the field and setting up a Field Goal, which the Somers defense blocked, with 3:28 left to play. After multiple penalties, and a few gains on good plays, Iglesias threw it up, and Rye came down with the ball, ending the game. The final scoreboard read 17-7, with the 45 game Section Win Streak Ending and the student section rushing the field in what was a huge win for the Garnets.
