With the 2025 high school football season right around the corner in the Volunteer State, it's time to focus our attention on class 5A as there are a ton of outstanding programs looking to make their mark this season. Programs like Sevier County, Page, Beech, Munford, Powell, and Tullahoma are all serious contenders for winning it all while Walker Valley, Kirkwood, Knox. West, Knox. Halls, and Henry County also have a decent shot at the crown. Without a doubt, class 5A is going to be loaded with talent and make for some top tier football action starting this upcoming fall.

Contenders

Sevier County

The Smoky Bears are an obvious contender for the class 5A title as Sevier County posted a flawless 15-0 overall record last season, going on to win the crown in a close matchup with Page in Chattanooga last year. The Smoky Bears should be just as dangerous as last year as several key players return to the fold. Sevier County will have returners like [player_tooltip player_id='1142902' first='Cooper' last='Newman'], [player_tooltip player_id='1103040' first='Jaxson' last='Perry'], [player_tooltip player_id='1543020' first='Joey' last='Galazin'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1630984' first='Roman' last='Gibbons']. The Smoky Bears should not be slept on this upcoming season.

Page

The Patriots also have a good shot at winning it all in class 5A as Page made it all the way to the title game last year, falling short against Sevier County. The Patriots recorded a 14-1 overall record as well as a 6-0 mark in district games. Page could be one of the top teams in class 5A yet again as the Patriots are bringing back several key prospects in [player_tooltip player_id='540028' first='Knight' last='Wilson'], [player_tooltip player_id='402552' first='Jordan' last='Curll'], [player_tooltip player_id='853121' first='Jacob' last='Rathbone'], and [player_tooltip player_id='853120' first='Cayden' last='Aukerman']. Page is worth keeping an eye on this year.

Beech

The Buccaneers are also looking like a top title contender this season as Beech is looking to build off of last year's success. In the 2024-25 campaign, the Buccaneers posted an 11-2 overall record and a 5-1 mark in district play. Beech could be just as explosive this year as the Buccaneers have retained talent like [player_tooltip player_id='800803' first='Chelton' last='Swafford'], [player_tooltip player_id='903534' first='DK' last='Williams'], [player_tooltip player_id='1317766' first='Sawyer' last='Phillips'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1114738' first='Jack' last='Fuchs']. Beech has a real shot at the class 5A title this year.

Munford

The Cougars also look like a strong program to make a run for the title game as Munford proved themselves last season, posting a 9-2 overall record and a perfect 5-0 mark in district competition. Munford will also be bringing back an assortment of talent, including [player_tooltip player_id='1585458' first='Tay' last='Starks'], [player_tooltip player_id='1104284' first='Dequavion' last='Bell'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1597028' first='Jaydien' last='Mullins']. The Cougars have a shot at being a dominant team within class 5A and potentially winning it all in Chattanooga this upcoming December.

Powell

The Panthers are another team within class 5A to not sleep on this year as Powell is looking to build on their success from last season. Powell closed out the 2024-25 campaign with a 9-3 overall record and a 3-1 mark in district games. Powell should be able to make a run for the title as the Panthers are bringing back prospects like [player_tooltip player_id='1111032' first='Deuce' last='Rodgers'], [player_tooltip player_id='1154536' first='Iverson' last='Garcia'], and [player_tooltip player_id='402538' first='Ethan' last='Hill']. Powell should definitely be worth watching this season.

Tullahoma

The Wildcats are another program to keep an eye on in class 5A as Tullahoma has a real shot at the title this year. During the 2024-25 season, Tullahoma recorded a 6-5 overall record and a 4-2 record in district competition. The Wildcats have also retained important players like [player_tooltip player_id='853128' first='Marvancy' last='Johnson'], [player_tooltip player_id='1103036' first='Will' last='Hyden'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1432189' first='Lucas' last='Reed']. Tullahoma could be a real title contender this season.

Sleepers

Walker Valley

The Mustangs are a real sleeper team within class 5A as Walker Valley is certainly looking to build on last year's success. During the 2024-25 season, Walker Valley posted a 7-4 overall record and a 3-2 record in district play. The Mustangs may have more than just a chance as several key players will be returning to the fold. Some players on the roster to watch are [player_tooltip player_id='540015' first='Chase' last='Stephens'], [player_tooltip player_id='1125399' first='Roman' last='Eulo'], and [player_tooltip player_id='834616' first='Tyler' last='Goldman'].

Kirkwood

The Cobras are another sleeper team to keep an eye on as Kirkwood could prove to be a strong program within class 5A. The Cobras closed out the 2024-25 campaign with an 8-3 overall record and a 5-2 record in district play. There are more than a few returning players that could give Kirkwood a chance at the title, including [player_tooltip player_id='944767' first='Kamari' last='Blair'], [player_tooltip player_id='1316743' first='Parker' last='Keenan'], [player_tooltip player_id='1200717' first='Miles' last='Reding'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1432194' first='Josiah' last='Claybrooks'].

Knox. West

The West Rebels are also a sleeper team within class 5A that I believe has a real shot at winning it all. Knox. West is looking to improve on last year's record as the West Rebels picked up a 9-4 overall record and an undefeated mark in district games. Knox. West also has a few key returning players that could really help lead the West Rebels on the field this year, including [player_tooltip player_id='1305810' first='J.P.' last='Peace'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1590259' first='Jamari' last='Goines'].

Knox. Halls

The Halls Red Devils are another sleeper team from the Knoxville area to watch out for this year as I believe they could definitely upset the natural order. Knox. Halls had a strong year in the 2024-25 campaign, posting an 8-4 overall record and a 2-3 mark in district competition. This season, the Halls Red Devils are bringing back a lot of talent like [player_tooltip player_id='1294979' first='Jarrell' last='Chandler'], [player_tooltip player_id='1102989' first='Amari' last='Lethgo'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1657165' first='Dom' last='Culp'].

Henry County

The Patriots are another sleeper in class 5A that could potentially make a run for the title as Henry County made their presence known on the field last year, recording a 7-5 overall record and a neutral 3-3 record in district play. The Patriots may be even tougher this year, bringing back important prospects like [player_tooltip player_id='932897' first='Ayden' last='Spellings'], [player_tooltip player_id='834577' first='Diezal' last='Ward'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1592212' first='Deonte' last='Ward'].

With the 2025 high school football season right around the corner in the Volunteer State, it's time to focus our attention on class 5A as there are a ton of outstanding programs looking to make their mark this season.
